Hi Erykah! It sounds like I could have written this, lol! My husband wouldn't even talk about it for years.Then he came to the seminar and afterwards he turned to me and said that he felt better about having all of the facts and would support me if I decided to have it or not. At least your husband is open minded enough to go and listen, it's a good start. I will tell you what all of the fine folks on this website told me: We're here for you! But, nobody can make up your mind for you, but you. I was very torn until I went to the seminar. Personally, I found it put a lot of fears to rest. Good luck in your search and decision, and remember you aren't alone. Everyone here has been so understanding. Just look at how we can all relate to this thread! I hope to see more people put their "never agains" on here, it's so inspiring! :sneaky:

I'm so glad I read this! I'm having a hard time with my pre-op diet today and this was just the motivation I needed! If I may add one more: Never again will I ask my husband if we can sit down when dancing before a song is finished because I'm too out of breathe. I will dance a whole song and then someday we'll dance all night!

I consider myself lucky. I have really good insurance that covers this procedure without any jumping through hoops. No 6 month documented diet needed. I went to the seminar in July. They submitted the request to my insurance for me and I was pre-approved. Met with the surgeon for the first time last Tuesday. They lined up all my appointments and if all goes well and I lose 20 lbs by then, I'll be banded late Oct/ early Nov.

Update: I'm going to do it!! I had my first consult last Tuesday with Dr. Arif Ahmad in Port Jefferson. I felt so comfortable with him and his wife who works there as well! I have all of my pre surgical tests set up and I've already been pre-approved by my insurance with no problems!! I just have to lose 20 lbs and hopefully I will be banded late Oct/early November. I'm so excited to start this new chapter in my life! Thank you so much again for your input and honesty. And you know what? I told my parents and they both pleasantly surprised me with their support! In fact- my Dad says I've inspired HIM to look into it now! I'd say wish me luck- but I realize it's just hard work on my part, not luck that will get those 20 lbs off...I'll do it because I'm worth it. (Just remind me of that when I complain I can't do it) :wink2:

Wow! I'm so impressed with all of you. You have the confidence that I hope to have one day. I appreciate everyone's input but most imortantly I'm glad to know that others have felt the way I do and you moved past it. I feel like it's time for me to do something important for ME. MY health and well being. I will go to the seminar with an open mind and if I wish to move foward (which I think I do), I will leave it as a personal decision that I will not seek approval from my family and friends for. If it gets too lonley again, at least I know there is a place I can go (here!) where I will not be laughed at and will receive support if I need it. Hi, I'm new here. I am going to a Lap Band seminar in my area on July 14th. I've thought about Lap Band and Gastric Bypass for a couple of years and after talking to people who have had these surgeries and weighing the pros and cons, I've decided the Lap Band is the better choice for me. With the exception of my husband who wants to come with me to the seminar and be educated on how he can support me (he's never had a weight issue), I find I am surrounded by people who do not believe the Lap Band will work. I haven't told anyone yet that I am thinking of having it done myself. I have been feeling out friends and family to see how supportive they will be and if I can count on them. Not one has had anything positive to say. Over and over I hear the words, "The Lap Band doesn't work. Only gastric bypass works." How do they know??? None of these people have had it done. I know 2 people who had gastric bypass and almost died from complications. I know one person who had the Lap Band and gained almost all of her weight back- but because she never went back for a fill in 4 years and drinks milk shakes every day. I feel like I am surrounded by people who would be waiting for me to fail. I should get angry and say to myself, "I'll show them." but I find myself wondering if they're right. Nothing else has worked for me so why should this? Has anyone else had this problem of almost non existant support?
