There are some insect control companies that use "natural" methods to control insects. Personally though, I think that a chemical used in moderation is a small enough risk to be tolerable. As bad as our chemical industry is at foisting poisons on us, we still have a higher life expectancy than did our grand-parents.

If we worked for NorthWest Airline, we might not have needed a Lap-Band. They recently distributed a booklet to their employess who face job-cuts and salary cuts. The airline suggested that workers can take "a date for a walk along the beach or in the woods." The booklet also says the workers should not be "shy about pulling something you like out of the trash" and not to go shopping while hungry. Gee, and I thought our economy was doing so well.

There are a myriad of reasons why we sabotage ourselves. One is our own emotional problems which lead us to get obese in the first place and the other is the way that we were lead to believe that the surgery was the fix. I know your doctor told you that the band was only a tool, but marketing talent was employed by the media, the manufacturer and by the doctor's staff. It may have been subtle, but they know how desperate people respond to "here it is, but..." No matter how big the "small print" is, it is still "small print". Do not give up on yourself. Do not feel defeated and then let that feeling of defeat become a self fulfilling prophesy. Seek a support group and/or seek professional help. Your band is only one of the tools. You, I mean we, all, need more.

The other reason is because the US Public and the News Media have made a deal (notarized by Satan?) to high-light non-news (or at least unimportant news and non life effecting) that has no lasting effect on the public other than to satisfy their thirst for gossip and speculation. Case in point: The JonBenet Ramsey 10 year old murder mystery and the nut case who claims to be her long lost and sought after killer. The real tragedy is how much important news was bumped from TV news shows and pumped from the pages of newspapers. Many important stories which may effect the lives of the US public were pushed aside to hear about this maybe-killer or maybe-15 minutes of fame-seeker. I usually spend a few hours a day watching cable-news. Yesterday, I taped 3 times as much as normal so that I could fast forward past the repetitive displays of this tragic 6 year old dancing in her parent's Quest to make her a star, to fast forward past the 7 and 10 year old interviews of her parents and the Boulder DA and police and to fast forward past the guessing of the experts. Many years from now, people will not know what important bill George W. BuSh signed into law, or about the killing of the Afghan army's soldiers by US fire or about many other things that are happening, but they will remember about "that guy arrested in was it Japan or Vietnam(?) or, oh well some place over there".

So true, but the Band does help. I would do it again, even though all my family members think the Lap-Band has been a failure. Losing 95 pounds when you want to lose 150 is like the old half-full/half-empty debate. I still love to eat. Food has been my companion (though not my friend) ever since I was a child. I used to be skinny (my nick-name in high-school) until I hurt my leg playing football in college, then my calorie output dropped, but my calorie input rose. Result: 80 pound weight gain in 8 months. Since the Lap-Band surgery, I have grieved like I lost a friend, but it was only a companion, no make that an acquaintance. Sometimes when I got stuck at a weight and just could not lose, it was because I wasn't eating enough and my (prehistoric) thermostat drove my metabolism to protect me from starving. Instead of cutting back, I ate a little more including fat. I did not eat huge amounts of fat, but I stopped avoiding fat. Someday, I hope to start losing again. I seem to be in a stuck situation again, but I seem to keep injuring myself every time I start back to the gym. My body doesn't respond to training the way it used to. Hope my rant helped.

I guess the only good downs are the weight losses, but I have suffered too many other negative situations and sometimes I just feel like quitting, but luckily, I have a wonderful wife (looking over my shoulder as I write this), a great son and grand-children to give me a reason to survive. Have you ever heard Ray Charles sing "Lucky Old Son" and/or "Old Man River"? Put those two songs together with "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by the Hollies and that is what gets me going. A Lap-Band will not save anyone. A Lap-Band is a tool. Will buying a toolbox full of automotive tools, save you money on car repairs? Not unless you know how to use tools. Having a tool is the first step. Learning how to use the tool is the second and more important step. Many people who get bariatric surgery are disappointed with the results because they expect the surgery to act as a magic carpet and fly them to skinny-land. Sorry. If you want to be a pilot, you must learn to fly a plane. Bariactric surgery is not magic. Even a magician spends many hours (if not months or years) learning his craft. If anyone wants to be successful after bariactric surgery, they must follow the eating regiment prescribed by their surgeon or his nutritionist. Drinking is also important. One has to learn when to drink and when to avoid drinking. Proper choice of foods after surgery, after fills and at other times must be adhered to. Exercise is just as important as food regulation. I am not writing this to scare anyone. Many have been successful with their weight loss and many have not. Follow the rules. Don't be a pest, but insist on concise answers from your surgeon (or his nutritionist).

Yes, I had the EPS and during the EPS, my heart stopped. I was looking at the monitor and saw the flat-lines and the doctor asked, "Do you know what is going on?" and I replied, "My heart is not beating." We conversed for another 15 seconds (which seemed like an eternity) and then my heart started beating again. At the time, because I worked around electronic equipment, we decided that an AICD would mean forced medical retirement which I did not want. I want to make one thing clear; when I said that I: I was referring to my build in pacemaker which is a part of the nervous system of the body, not a man made and implanted pace-maker. I have passed stress tests or nuclear stress tests every year since the EPS and as long as I keep my weight under control and take my medication, I should be ok (I hope).

Please call your doctor for advice or if you had counseling by a nutritionist working in conjunction with your surgeon, call him/her. My doctor's plan for after surgery eating may be different than your doctor's plan. There are so many possibilities. Different brands of bands. Different sizes of bands. Different positioning of the band. Different initial tightness of the band. Each doctor has his own methods.

I like your sense of humor. I used to be right, now I am correct. A country is like a bird or an airplane. They each need a right-wing and a left-wing to fly. If either wing is too big, there must be a major correction by the rudder or elevators, or the plane or bird will crash.

I have an unusual heart condition and about 4 years ago, my heart stopped beating on a Sunday afternoon. I jumped out of my computer chair and starting doing "jumping-jacks" which I assumed (correctly since I am alive to write about it) would signal my autonomic pacemaker (part of the body) to kick my heart-rate up. My cardiologist did not believe me when I reached him through his service, but told me to get a ride to the local hospital's ER. While on monitoring equipment, my pulse dropped to the low 40's, and my blood-pressure hit as low as 71/45. I was on a monitor in the cardiac ward for 5 days and a few times my heart stopped for as long as 20 seconds, but restarted each time before the "crash-cart" arrived. I am being treated with medication and am tested every 6 months or so. So far, "knock on wood", I am surviving.:faint:

Sounds to me like some who think I am unAmerican are trying to limit my First Amendments rights. Now I ask, "Is that being American or unAmerican?" I have been called names for stating my opinion. I have been accused of harboring terrorists. My father was killed in WWll in Berlin while fighting for the USA against Germany. My daughter-in-law was standing next to the South when it was hit and suffered both physical and physiological damage. I wiped that gray soot and tears from her face after she ran from the falling South Tower and held on for her life as she walked across the Brooklyn Bridge as the North Tower came down and then walked the 8 miles to our home. My son worked on the elevators of the World Trade Center as a member of Local 3 of the IBEW. I was an aircraft mechanic that worked for the airline which hit one of the towers and the Pentagon. I lost my job because of 911. I am an American and I have a right to speak. But I do not have a right to call people names and I don't. Report me to the FBI if you think I am a subversive. Let's see, "I know of this guy who exercises his constitutional rights of free speech." That will definitely get me investigated and arrested. Where is Joseph McCarthy when you need him?

I received an e-mail recently with an attached file called "heartattack1.pps". It is a slick presentation on how to save your life if you are having a heart attack while alone, BUT IS IS NOT TRUE yet, because of it's high quality and because it names a medical institution as it's source, it can be very dangerous and misleading. I wish there was a way to upload the file to this forum so that all of you could see how seductive it is.

My first job (that I received pay for) was working for Schraffts Candy as a Coffee-Boy in the "Grace-Line" Building in Manhattan. I was paid $.90 an hour and had to fill a cart with goodies (rolls, muffins, pastries), fill a 15 gallon coffee earn with coffee, put tea-bags, milk and sugar, and cups, stirrers and napkins, etc on the cart and then take it to 6 floors of the huge office building, stopping at each office complex. Then after cleaning up the cart, I would serve lunch to the building's workers from the cafeteria's steam-table for 2.5 hours and then restock the cart for the next coffee-break run of the same 6 floors. I was 17 and had graduated high-school, and when I told my boss that I was quitting to go to college, he said that I should consider staying, because I was such a good worker. I know he had my best interest at heart.:faint: My real first job was working (for free) for my step-father. He ran a TV repair business as a second job and needed help carrying the huge sets of the 1950's. TV sets at that time sometimes only had 5 inch or 13 inch screens but weighed more than today's 32 inch sets and were larger. So after dinner during the week and all day on Saturdays and Sundays, I got to go to strangers' homes and after carrying in a tool box or tube box, I stood there while my step-father tried to fix the TV, hoping that he could fix it there, knowing that if he could not and had to take it to our home, I would have to carry it down the stairs and then up the stairs. It really got to be fun, when he got a contract for a charitable organization that took care of home-bound (often wheel chair bound) people. People would donate TV's to the organization and (because TV's were mostly built on the same chassis) my step-father would try to make one working set from two or three non-working sets. The best part was taking the burned out power transformers and unwinding the copper wire from the transformer core and winding it into a ball for sale at the metal scrap yard. Sometimes, on Saturday, we finished early enough so that I go out and play for an hour before dark and if my hands were not bleeding too much or too sore to catch a ball, I could play with the other 11 or 12 year olds on the block. I guess the work ethic is contagious, because as an adult, I was always noted as the hardest worker on my job. So when people debate genes vs nurture, I have to vote for nurture.
