I first looked into lap band surgery in 2003 after an injury to my lower back and obese wear and tear on my hips.  I was denied twice by my insurance company at the time for the surgery.  I gave up and went on my way.  I kept thinking that it was not my destiny to have WLS.  In January 2009 I became very ill and spent some time in ICU.  My Cardiologist and PCP said I had to do something or my health would continue to decline.  I decided to go to another seminar at Texas Gastric Banding in The Woodlands, Tx.  After meeting with Dr. Wilkenfeld and his staff again, I decided that self pay was the only option.  I had surgery on Feb. 3rd 2009 in Houston.  It was outpatient and the experience was as good as surgery can be.  I only had issues with the Co2 pain for the whole five days after.  Many times I asked myself what the heck I was thinking when I signed up for this.   These feelings faded with the pain and I started to exercise and eat right for the first time in a very, very long time.  Month three came and my hips and back decided to act up again and I have not been able to walk or exercise like I want to since.  I have yoyo'd for the past month and I'm very discouraged at this point.  All in all though, I feel I have made the best decision possible in my case.  The road has been long and not so smooth.  I feel like giving up sometimes, but I have two kids that solely count on me to provide for them.  When I am upfront with the office staff on my feelings they are nothing but supportive.  I am very blessed with their support.  It is my inner demons and years of horrible eating habits that I must overcome on my own.  I'm still waiting for my band to kick in and give me the extra support that I need physically, but I also feel that this will come soon.  So I trudge on hoping that the ah ha moment is around the next corner :)
