Long Term Lapbanders
Its a good question that I had been meaning to do some research on too.. This is the site I found LAP-BAND: Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery | Statistics The scales are in kg and BMI, I will have to look over it again to be able to read it,, I think there is other information in the side bar, but as far as I can tell this is the only other study except for the ones being done in the us right now..

Priorities.. Elderly parent and young children
Thanks for the advice.. I was hoping business would have picked up this summer so that I could have afforded to send them to rec, but they jacked the prices sky high because of fuel costs.. I was out of work for most of 5 months with a broken leg and lost business last fall and winter and we are still playing catch up with bills. life is grand isn't it?? I am certainly going to have to organize their days even more, and not allow them in "his" part of the house without me in the room. My dad stays in the office so the kids can hang in his living room when their not outside..(in my line of vision) I am going to sit down with him next week and pick his brain to see if I can get anything out of him as to where his head is, and let him no how much damage he is causing for everyone especially my kids. My husband told him clearly that if he went in our house when again he would call the police. I have no idea if that scared him or not. I was hoping his father would at least make him apologize to us and my son but that has not happened yet.

Priorities.. Elderly parent and young children
He lives with his dad too.. sorry I didn't make that clear. Its really sad because we have all been so excited to get to know him because his mom took him away when he was 5. He is funny and can be a great kid. I have voiced to his father that I think he is desperate for attention and bored to death. The thing I don't understand is why he would think it was okay to go in my house when I told him repeatedly that he couldn't.. Most teens I am privy to be around regularly seem to think their actions should just be accepted as ok, and that there shouldn't be consequences. I'm an old school parent, mayby that is the difference with my kids. My son accepted his punishment at 8 and completely understood why he was in trouble.. and felt remorse the teen has that dumb look on his face.. My dad is clueless to the whole ordeal at the moment and I don't want to worry him, and my sister on the other side of us has changed her locks.. she had the same issue with teen last month.. arghhh

My Family - Need Advice
One thing I have learned about family drama is that no matter what you decided you can't go back on it once the event or whatever is over. If you choose not to go, don't regret it later. Call whoever is throwing the event, tell them you won't be attending, don't make excuses.. It is your body, mind and decision.. Send grandma a card and well wishes in the mail and pat yourself on the back for not letting them eat at your soul with their stupidness.... I am following this advice myself at the moment. I was invited to a party with some old friends, I didn't want to go because we are in different places in our lives and I don't want the drama. I had a list of excuses and realized how stupid I sounded saying them in my head..I called and said I would try to make it but had other responsibilities, have a wonderful time.. I have not heard from any of them, but feel really good that I didn't grovel, or go to the party with bad gut feelings and have something happen,, like my broken leg last year...

Priorities.. Elderly parent and young children
I am in a very distressing situation right now, lots of stress and anxiety which is my eating demon... I work with my dad who is 85, office is in his home next door to mine. He doesn't do much but the banking, answering the phone and signing the checks to pay the bills. He is very lucid for the most part unless he is not feeling well, which has been a lot lately due to back problems. My children come to work with me, age 8 and 11. I have never sent them to daycare and couldn't afford to anyways,, whole point of working for myself. my dillema: Another family member lives with my dad, with their teenager.. Teen has been going through a rough time and came to live here out of his mothers desperation. He was great for the first 4 months, but has since been in trouble, and has been caught convincing my kids to cover up for his bad behavior.. The latest thing has been convincing my 8 yr. old (and 11 yr old 2 wks ago) to walk to my house, after being told repeatedly they couldn't be there without me, and using our pc and tv.. My kids asked me if they could go get a game on one occasion and I could see them walk through the field to the house.. when they didn't come right back I called and told them to immediately. The last few days they have said they were going to play in the field.. after not seeing them for a short time I got worried and started looking for them.. They showed up in the field again so I went back inside. When my husband got home from work he noticed a cup ring on his pc desk and someone had deleted the history.. after some questioning and punishment for not being truthful it came out that they had been in the house numerous times and the teen had forced my child to go in even after he said he was in trouble.. the teen got into my husbands twisted tea which was in his office and out of reach for a reason, and his tobacco (he rolls his own,, wish he would quit).. after a conversation and freak out with teens father, he discovered the teen was breaking into his vehicle at night and taking his stuff that he had put in there to keep it out of reach. I could work from home, but my father doesn't like to be alone and needs me there if we have walk ins.. I have to take my kids but I don't want them around the teen and I can't be in the same room with them every minute, and they can't be in the office when I'm on the phone or have someone in.. and I have to work.. I've gone so far as to call some friends to see where their teens are working to try to find trouble maker a job!!! I do not want his bad behavior influencing my children, ,I love the teen very much but can't trust him at all anymore to do the right things around my kids. My son loves him and I don't want that to change but I have no idea how to make him understand that he can't follow him.. I have used some scare tactics, and have disciplined my son for not coming home and telling on the teen, or at least not going in the house himself. I need to be there for my dad and my job, but I can't let anyone manipulate my children and do things that could harm them.. any feedback would be great..

Friendly Observation part 1 of 2
I saw your picks so read you blogs.. good points, and congrats on your success. I loved the part about sticking with the yoga, it is a great accomplishment. I haven't been banded yet, but am encouraged by the positive post too. I seem to get more negative responses from my personal interactions and need to hear the better side here. I was very skeptical at first because one of my first posts I stated how hard I had tried with dieting and calorie counting and was replied with "this isn't going to work for you if your not losing by cutting calories,, or some such response... I felt I had to defend myself and replied with something stupid (not mean) and embarrassed myself when I should have ignored the comment. My reasons for lapband are not just about what it says on the scale, but about my health in general.. Thanks for the posts, and best wishes to you

I am this close to boycotting Target
In the past year the whole "buying clothes" had really been a nightmare.. Some would call the plus sizes "old lady clothes", but even the older ladies I know wouldn't buy them.. I swear the plus size designers made a point of making hideous clothing to make us stand out even more.. Floral tops?? flourescent striped shorts?? short sleeve shirts so short they get caught in your arm pits!!! There will always be overweight people in the world who are that way for a million different reasons as we see in here.. shopping should not be such a nightmare.

Anxiety AFTER surgery?
I'm sorry your feeling that way, its horrible to be on the edge like that for any length of time. Make sure you keep up communications about it with you doctor so that it doesn't go on any longer then it needs to. Non professional guess would be that its been too long for it to be anesthia. Are you taking a new multi Vitamin?? Take note of when it feels the worst, and how long it lasts. I have suffered with this since I was a teenager,, I am just now getting a grip on it.. suggestions: slow deep breathing, in and out 3 times,, take a break and try it again (do to much and you get dizzy lol) try doing something that makes you feel calm,, reading, sewing, walking whatever your interest are. Life has changed for you and it is terrifying I'm sure. We all have huge expectations of how we want things to be, but it will be hard work to get there. Hope you are feeling better soon..

My nutritionist has great ideas
Thanks kfgates, I will check it out!! I bought some carnation ones to try and my kids ended up drinking them all.. they substituted them for their usual bagel so I didn't complain, and think I will get them some when school starts. My daughter is entering puberty and has been on a junk food craze lately and I'm trying to keep it out of the house!! We are going to revamp some old recipes this week using applesauce in place of most of oil or butter, and try some things with whole wheat flour.. I tried making Cookies with splenda but most didn't taste very good and were thrown away after a week.. I did well again yesterday with saying no to seconds, my hubby was even amazed.. I didn't even have a snack, and when I started to get the urge it was 10 pm so I went to bed and read.. Hopefully the weekend will go well.. Hope yours is grand!

My nutritionist has great ideas
I started seeing a new nutritionist in May and she has really been wonderful and supportive. She makes sure we schedule extra time to discuss things, all about health and food, beyond the regular appointment stuff. She has helped me figure out that I eat due to stress, which I have a lot of. She has also encouraged me to eat what I enjoy by making it a little healthier. One of the things she had me try this week, was staying away from senconds.. when something is really good its very hard for me to stop,, I love food and always have.. If life is tough I can't stop myself, until now.. She said to eat my correct portion size and then tell myself that if I really want it, then I can have more,, just later, at least one hour. She even went so far as to tell me to put the "more" in a container in the fridge.. It really had a strange effect on me. I knew it was there with my name on it, and I never went back for it.. I will have it for lunch today, it was potatoe salad, on a bed of lettuce.. I did the same thing with a whole wheat Pasta chop suey (made with ground turkey and fat free cottage cheese) The other advice was to buy a smaller plate just for myself, I put it on top of my regular dinner plate for the psychological effect. I will see how it works in two weeks at my next appt. It was great advice so I wanted to share. I would love to hear any other words of wisdom from your dietician or nutritionist.

Does anyone else's weight flex between 4 & 5 lbs a day
My weight fluctuates 3-5 lbs a day also, and has always done that. I have to force myself not to weigh in everyday. I can understand why you are right now with worries about the weigh in for surgery. My doctor is known for canceling surgery due to a weight gain.. My last appointment with my regular dietician I had gained 3 lbs and was devastated. Hang in there and watch your sodium intake,, I went back to salt sense and can already see a difference,,, (and it tastes good)

Got my tooth banded today
I'm pretty fortunate to have decent teeth, but the fillings I got in high school are falling out, and the one I left untreated needed a root canal... should have had it fixed when it happened...better late then never I guess. Anyways,, I had my tooth banded today,. pretty funny huh? I had the root canal done and the tooth had a crack in the center so the doc wanted to make sure it would be okay for a crown when its time so he banded it.. No pain yet, but the only soft food in my office today was mac and cheese,, will have to find something better later. I need some fillings replaced, and decided that what better time then when I am preparing for the new beeuutiful me...lol:thumbup:

So give me the scoop about staples.
LOL,, they are creep looking. I have had over 100 of them put in and taken out.. it really doesn't hurt, the tape they used hurt sooo much more and caused a blistering infection on two different occasions.. When the doc removed them from my leg he said "NOW YOU KNOW HOW A PIECE OF PAPER FEELS" .. WEIRDO...
-
those silly stocking they sent home...
I would do what your doctor told you to do. There must be a reason that you are more at risk for clots. I had to wear them after I broke my leg for more then a month for lack of movement.. If they are too tight and its necessary they can get you ones that fit better. I had a family history of heart disease, that was my surgeons reasoning.

I need my gallbladder out! Could this move up my lap band surgery?
I am fearful that I will have to have my gallbladder out also because it is not functioning properly. I am currently not having pain issues and hope they don't start before my date is sceduled. I really hope it works out for you and that they can bump you up the list!! thoughts and prayers are with you

Another step towards my goal
Well I completed another task on my TO-DO LIST today.. I had a root canal done in a tooth that has had problems for a very long time. I haven't been chewing properly and now I will be able to again. I was very fortunate to have a good doctor and have not had any pain issues as of yet.. The weather here has been crazy and I have been struggling to get in enough walking. My son and I went yesterday and had to cut it short because it started to rain and thunder. We haven't been able to go swimming everyday either which was my goal.. I just reread my surgery and clinic information again and I am going to be required to lose 15 lbs even though my insurance doesn't think it is necessary.. I am really struggling with that, gained a pound according to the nutritionists scale. I believe I was retaining fluids that day because my hands were swollen,, and think is was the pizza sauce we ate the night before. I will try harder for the next two weeks and hope there is some change. It would be devestating to have my surgery cancelled because of weight gain. I wish the doctors had a better idea of what is going on with me, I don't want to fail.

My Wife Wants Lap-Band...
[OK the husband....... it was VERY hard for him to watch me eat so little..... I think it actually pissed him off. (much like forcing a child to clean his plate) He would get irritated with me if I didn't want to spend the money on a buffet for me when I would eat very little.... (and it was something I had to get over) He tried to become the food police...... (and that is a HUGE HUGE no no!) As of late... I think he is sick of hearing about my band..... we have adjusted to the fact that I usually share a meal with my 4 year old son, or just order something alacarte... I'm smaller now that when we first met and he makes comments that my ass is flat..... He understands that I'm much happier with myself. He is a good man and he really tries to be supportive.... but I think sometimes he feels a little left out......... I have been through a hysterectomy and broken tib/fib and this is similar to how my husband reacted from the attention of others or because I had to put myself first. When I asked him for support he immediately started preaching to me about food... I told him support was bringing home yogurt instead of chunky monkey icecream, going for a walk or swimming with me, or giving me a hug when things were tough.

My Wife Wants Lap-Band...
I pray when it comes right down to it my hubby will have the same attitude as you and want to lose weight along with me. We had done it before the traditional way but there are lot more factors now. I do all the cooking and shopping and he and my kids are already noticing the changes,, like frozen yogurt instead of icecream.. best wishes to you both

Anyone with ibs, diverticulosis?? Did lap band help??
Thanks for the replies.. I was pretty confident that it would be okay because I was pre-approved medical wise, but I'm so siked for this now after months of thinking about it I don't want any brick walls. Its good to hear that some of the symptoms go away.. Being constipated is horrifying for me after going the other way for so long,, stool softeners are a must... TMI huh?? lol, there isn't much you don't discuss openly when it comes to this huh? I don't think I have ever shared my weight with people as much as I have in the past month.. I even braved adding a ticker,, now hopefully it will start moving huh? I have been on a salad bender for about two months, now eating lots of yogurt and fruit trying to prepare myself for the new eating habits.. I haven't had IBS symptoms since I started, and the reflux is getting better also, and I have been sleeping better too!! I hope my motivation continues and the hunger or urge to eat goes away!

Is it the band or are you a picky eater?
I have heard different stories from people I know who have had WLS, some continue to have food issues, while others eat what they want just a lot less.. I was wondering if it is because they were picky eaters before surgery? The ones I know that have trouble eating were picky eaters, who only ate meat and junk. I'm not being judgemental just wondering what the concensus is on the subject.. I am not a picky eater and am hoping I won't become one.

I am so upset!!
If he made the referral I would wait to see what the surgeons says before giving up. What is the BMI limit?? here its 30 to 39 with co-morbities, also your insurance has guidlines that they require.. unless you are self pay.. Cholesterol is a comorbity ,, I'm sorry it is so frustrating for you, don't give in and gain that 30 lbs back, you worked to hard to lose it.

Anyone with ibs, diverticulosis?? Did lap band help??
I have talked to my PCP about it, but not the surgeon yet. I would think that it would get better with better eating habits, and not overeating?? I have been seeing a nutritionist for a few months and just the changes I have made with that I have not had a spell for a long time. One thing that really concerns me is getting dehydrated, that will bring it on fast, along with kidney stones.. I always have a bottle of Water at hand so that will not be a big change for me. I so want to be healthy..

weird question
I have had a few different procedures and don't remember any of that. The operating room is terrifying when you are first rolled in if its your first time, but the nurses are amazing and really take good care of you. If you are feeling anxious while they are doing the pre op prep work they will give you a mild sedative, I didn't like the zophran?, but adavan worked well and I was totally coherent and could communicate with the nurses and doctors.. I brought saline for my sinuses because the hospital is very dry, and chapstick too.. I didn't even have a sore throat and I had an alergic reaction to one of the meds so they had to inubate me.. best wishes to you
