Comments People Make
I attend a lap band support group at a local hospital, but had my band surgery performed by a surgeon that is located a few hours from here. Most of the ladies that are in the support group had a local surgeon do their surgery. My surgeon wants his patients to be on a low (under 30 carbs a day) carb diet and wants us to focus on Protein, the local program only focuses on getting enough protein, other than that you can eat what you want. Every time I go to a meeting and talk about how I am working out 4-5 hours a week and staying low carb and losing weight, someone always chimes in to tell the entire group that to remember that I am younger and it is easier for me (I am 31). I know that they are trying to make everyone else feel better for not having the same success... but it just seems to discount how hard I have been working. I know I am probably being to sensitive... but if it was so easy for someone my age to lose weight I wouldn't have had to have the band. I am literaly working working my ass off and trying to change my bad behaviors and everytime I share my success someone wants to credit it to me being younger. It has very little to do with my age, it is because I am following the bandster rules and trying to change my life. It is not even like I have lost an incredible amount of weight since my surgery (28 lbs in 10 weeks). I just wish I could share my progress like everyone else and not have it contributed to something that I am not controlling. I like my support group and I enjoy the meetings, but I am just not sure what I should say to stop the comments. Any ideas?

Should prostitution be legal?
Just wanted to throw some info out there. I work at a tax office and there are a few ladies in the "adult entertainment profession" that come in and have their taxes done. Now, there are some interesting expenses for the business... but the IRS does not care how the money is made, legal or illegal they want their cut. They get their EIC and pay their share of social security so they will be able to draw SS when they retire from the business.

Anybody else with Rheumatoid Arthritis here?
I had my surgery on September 9. Last year at this time I was on 10 mg of prednisone, 1200mg Daypro, and my remicade infusions. After I started the low-carb pre-op diet and losing about 20 lbs I was able to go off the daypro and downed my prednisone to 3 mgs. I honestly think the low-carb diet helped the arthritis. NSAIDS (like daypro and Alleve), are not on the top of my doctor's list of things to take. He said if I had to take them again that I could either crush them or make sure I take it while eating, but he preferred that I didn't take it. I am not sure about methotrexate since it has been years since I have been on it, but I think I remember reading that it slows healing and may increase chances for ulcers. I am not sure about Enbrel. My joints were fine after surgery. I didn't have any flair ups. I go to the gym regularly and I feel great. My arthritis is not stopping me from doing anything, which has not always been the case. I still do my remicade and I am continuing to taper off my prednisone. Good luck. If you have any more questions please ask away.

I am doing water aerobics and my current suit is starting to fall off, actually having to wear a bra under it so I don't flash the instructor.

A link to my Interview
Wasa - I think it is fair to say that there is a lot of good and bad "facts" about having surgery in Mexico. Just because someone bases their opinions on facts that you choose to ignore does not make it an non-informed opinion. There are some great doctors in Mexico, there have also been some hacks that have "made" their own band and screwed patients up. I personally wouldn't want to have surgery in any country where I suffered a language barrier. I also like retaining my rights to sue if the doctor does do something wrong. But, I am lucky and have great insurance that paid 99% of my band costs. Also, there are doctors in the US that will do surgery on minors. If you do the research you will find them.

A link to my Interview
My goodness, from what I read she was just stating that she wouldn't go to Mexico. In no way did it seem like she was trying to sound like a Mexican lap band expert. She wasn't quoted saying no one should go to Mexico, was she? Who knows, maybe I missed that part. (okay I just watched the video, but still she was just stating her opinion) It is your right to go to Mexico for surgery, but it is her right to not want to go to Mexico. Congrats on your loss.

My Dr said NO mashed potatoes for soft foods, anyone elses' say this?
Potatoes were big no no's. Way too many carbs. My doctor warns you too not eat more than 30 carbs a day, even during the soft-food stage. My staple during the soft stage was cottage cheese, which is something I didn't like much before the surgery but I can't live without now.

Honestly................
I am in Valdosta, GA.

Did you do an at-home iodine scrub before surgery ?
I had to use Hibiclens too. It wasn't terrible but I hated it! Basically I had to get wet then turn off the water then apply the Hibiclens to all my areas and then stand there freezing for fifteen minutes while it dryed. Then I could rinse off. I had to do this 2 times the night before surgery and once the morning of.

Honestly................
Unfortunately the same thing happened to me in May. I went in for my pre-op and they wanted me to sign paperwork saying I would pay whatever Tricare didn't... which would have added up to several thousand. The fact is that a Tricare network doctor can choose not to do "elective" procedures. I went round and round with Tricare and they said the hospital and doctor could refuse to take Tricare for the surgery. Technically they cannot balance bill, but you can sign your rights away, when I pushed the issue with the hospital they turned me away. Where in Florida are you? I ended up having to go to Jacksonville, FL to get my surgery, which is 2.5 hours from where I like. It was unfortunate, because the other place wasted three months of my time.

What Kind of Soup Are U Eating During The Mushie Stage?
I was not allowed soups during the mushie stage. I could have eggs, Beans, lentils and salad spreads (egg, chicken). I was most definitly not allowed potatoes. Of course, my doctor does not allow more than 30 carbs a day.

I feel like crap
I started feeling better yesterday. Right now my neck hurts, not from gas pain but probably from my neck hurting so much recently that I actually caused damage. I stomach still feels weird. I actually ate some real food yesterday and it was a bit uncomfortable. I guess I am getting better now. Thanks to all for listening to me vent.
-
Stomach ever feel normal?
Do you ever get to the point where your stomach feels normal. Inside my stomach doesn't hurt it just feels weird. My incisions are not bothering me. I just wish I couldn't feel my stomach.. like before the surgery.

I feel like crap
Okay. I guess I am just not one of the lucky ones who feel wonderful the day after the lap band. Although I have a very high pain tollerance and felt great the evening after a c-section I have felt like crap since my surgery. I had my surgery Tuesday (Sept 9) and I spent the night in the hospital because the doctor didn't want me to travel back to my home 2 hours away. The hospital stay was awful. I didn't feel great and the staff was a little less than helpful. The couple of times I asked for broth and Jello it took more than 2 hours to get it. When I asked about getting up and walking they told me that they would get around to it. I told them my doctor wanted me up walking at least 10 to 15 minutes every couple of hours and they said that it wasn't realistic because they were just too busy. My first days home were fine. I was a bit cloudy and my head hurt so I stopped taking my loritab. I still was okay and switched to liquid tylenol. Friday afternoon my shoulder and neck started killing me... I know the gas was causing it. But, at the same time the gas in my stomach and digestive system started playing with me. I had terrible gas in and out. I was in so much pain I could hardly handle it last night. I really feel like I have had the flu. Of course I couldn't take care of myself in the usual ways. Sprite is out. Crackers, nope. Hot bath... I don't think so. I called my surgeon this morning to just be assured that nothing it wrong and he told me that everyone suffers from gas differently. He also warned me against eating and solids yet. FYI - my doctor doesn't allow anything but Clear liquids and Protein shakes until at least a week after surgery. Okay. I have vented. Good luck to everyone.

Why Don't We Give A Little Update Where We're At
I had my surgery yesterday morning. I spent the night at the hospital since I lived 2 hours from the hospital. I am still pretty tired and have been taking my loritab elixor every 4 hours to aoid being in pain all together. Even with the meds I am sore at the port and incission sites. I have not had hardly any gas pains... but have had the hickups a few times... ouch! I will check back in later.

Can you take prednisone/ibuprofen and get a band put in?
I have RA and I take prednisone... which my doctor didn't have a problem with (some do). He preferred that I didn't take Daypro, which is a NSAID too. He said if I had to continue with Daypro to break in in half and take it while I am eating so it would be sandwiched between food. I am not sure about the Liquid stuff. I did find that once I went of the low-carb diet and dropped all bread and other white stuff that I didn't need the Daypro anymore and I lowered the dose of prednisone from 5 mg to 2-3 mg a day. Maybe you would have the same results!
-
Anybody else with Rheumatoid Arthritis here?
I have RA, but I am pre-op so I can't answer all your questions. I take 2.5mg of prednisone and have remicade infusions. I was on Daypro (an NSAID) but I went off of it because my doctor asked e to try. I can tell you that I have received a mixed response from RA patients that have had the surgery... so say it helped so say it hasn't. A few told me they had bad flair ups right after the surgery. Some doctors have an issue doing the lap band for someone that has been on long term steroids... but mine didn't have a problem. Good luck

Why Don't We Give A Little Update Where We're At
I have been on my pre pre-op diet for the past few months (basically just 30 carbs a day). Today I started my clear liquid diet that I will have to be on until 3 days after surgery. My surgery is on Tuesday (Sept. 9) at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville.

Couch to 5K for August...who's in?
I did Week 1 again today... at least the fifth time I did it. For some reason I had a harder time running today... but the weird thing is my heart rate went down quicker today (I always walk after the run until my rate falls below 65%). I am not sure that I will ever be ready to move to week 2. But, I guess that isn't the point. As long as I keep trying even if it takes me a year to get to Week 9 I will be okay with it. I am sure as I lose more weight it will get easier.... at least I hope. Good luck everyone. Kris
