I agree @@BLERDgirl I'm a little disappointed in this surgeon. She's been in the hospital for 2 days now and will be staying again tonight,. The surgeon hasn't even contacted us. The doctors here say they are going to contact him but maybe they haven't. I would have thought they'd have at least called me. This kid is 18,. I think they should be bending over backwards to try to figure out what the hell is going on! She's still on pain meds here and Zofran and Phenergan. The nausea is still bad. Granted, we don't know yet if the stone has passed and that could be making the nausea worse but it's been like this for 4 weeks. She's tried drinking and it is uncomfortable going down, she says she's having a feeling of pressure when she takes a sip. She is on IV fluids but I still want to see that she can comfortably take in liquids. Not to mention she's had no food nutrients for almost 4 weeks now. I don't want her to have to have a tube but when does malnutrition start to be a concern??

There was a young lady that had hers done almost the same time I did. While I was in my room I could hear her violently vomiting in the next room. I made sure I followed the plan for two weeks of liquids and two days prior of fasting because that can play a major part in our recovery afterwards. When they tell us nothing to eat or drink after midnight there is a reason. It can and will affect how the anestesia works. I hope things get better for her. My daughter is almost 4 weeks out from surgery so this isn't from the anesthesia. She followed the pre op diet to a T.

Wondering myself how well they checked for leakage after surgery. She should have been feeling better at least several days after. They checked leakage by CT swallow testtest the day after surgery before allowing liquids and another barium swallowing test a couple weeks out.

What if I'm in pain for months post-op - For the great majority, this doesn't happen. For some, it can. My daughter is one of the unlucky ones. But even with all this pain and nausea, I think she did the right thing. Continued unchecked, her health would have continued to go downhill. As others are saying, be positive! I'm saying even if that happens you will cope and move forward. I think it's important for people to go into this knowing all the risks. You can't possibly predict everything that might happen. But what you can predict is "I WILL make it through this!"What if I'm in a loophole and my addiction comes creeping back in and I don't lose weight- Yep, that could happen too but you'd have to work pretty hard at not losing anything. Don't drink sugared drinks, eat small, healthy meals, don't graze and you're golden. Find a support group or a good therapist to help you get to the bottom of your addiction. Fix the cause along with the sleeve and you should be healthy, mind body and soul! One thing my daughter is facing, food used to be comfort. She has to relearn everything and find other healthy ways to get comfort. (I suggest puppies! LOL kidding.)What if I feel empty and scared- I may venture to ask, do you feel empty and scared now? Do you fill that emptiness with comfort food? Prepare yourself now by getting a healthy hobby like Yoga or cycling or swimming laps. Or even leisurely swims in the pool. Treat yourself other ways like...buying new clothes when you're down a few sizes. Also, the therapist thing might come in handy here too. Bottom line. This isn't a magic wand, it's a tool to help you succeed where you may have had many failures before. You can do this!

@@FlabbyNat, good luck with your surgery! Keep hydrated! LOL @@Chrystee, I wonder that myself. We've known that kidney stone was in her kidney for a couple of months now. They say when it's still in the kidney, it doesn't cause pain. She was having pain before in that area though so I don't know if I believe them. I wonder if it could cause nausea too even while it's still in the kidney. There was definitely nausea while it was out of the kidney on the way to the bladder. Not to mention, excruciating pain. She's still having the nausea though. She's on Zofran and Phenergan and it isn't working. Or maybe it's working and the nausea would be even worse without it, who knows. She is so nauseated that she can barely drink Clear liquids and definitely can't tolerate Protein shakes. They have her on clear liquids only right now. Her body is exhausted from all of this.

Thanks everyone. She has a 4mm kidney stone that is paying out of the kidney. So painful! They admitted her about 6 this morning and have kept her pain and nausea under control. They are hydrating her and monitoring if the kidney stone passes or not. I feel better knowing she's at least getting hydrated and is finally somewhat comfortable for the first time in a long time. Hopefully the stone passes without her needing surgery. She had had enough suffering!

Yes I'm keeping track of her intake but not her output. She's been saying it's been difficult to urinate today and she started getting severe flank pain and vomiting. It's 2am and we are now in the ER. I'm thinking kidney stone. She has had them before. I think she's dehydrated and it's causing problems.

Thanks all for bolstering me up. I'm going to insist on talking directly to the surgeon tomorrow.

Why do they keep telling me this is normal in some patients? They say this happens in about 10% of their patients and they don't have an explanation for the nausea but that it DOES get better. They did a gastric swallowing study and say nothing is wrong. Thank you for weighing in. I just feel like they're treating me like I'm an overreactive mom.

Thanks LSF. I was in contact with the surgeons office last week. I asked at what point do they consider it a serious problem and at what point do they hospitalize. He sent her for a gastric swallowing study and said that it came back find so they ruled out any physical complications with the surgery. They said basically he didn't think she needed to be hospitalized but he could write the orders for her if I really wanted to do that I don't want to go through that if he thinks it's unnecessary but I'm getting to that point. He set us up to go for IV fluids last Tuesday. She was still nauseated all week but seemed to be getting some fluids in and seemed to perk up a little bit. But yesterday she started getting worse again. I don't know if going to another surgeon would help. He is one of the best in Austin. I may have to make some calls though.

Interesting! I'll try that soon. Day 24 Post Op Constant nausea continues. The vomiting has stopped. She's barely able to drink anything at all but I force her to take small sips as much as I can. She hasn't eaten. She had one bite of something but couldn't tolerate it. She's also having diarrhea but I can't see how. She's barely taking anything in. I hate seeing my daughter in this much suffering and I feel so helpless. Nothing has worked. The surgeon says it will just take time but he can't say how much time. I'm not a nurse, I don't know at what point dehydration becomes serious.

I was too LSF, I've tried just about everything.

They've given her Zofran and a stronger med, Phenergan. Neither have made any significant difference. I've also talked to her GI Specialist and he called in another prescription for Buspar which is an anti-anxiety med that can also help wtih nausea. So far, not helping.

Yes, she's been off the pain meds for at least a week.

She had a patch initially and we were told to remove it day 3. I believe it was a Transdermal Scopalmine patch. I don't know if they can prescribe that for use past day 3. She went for IV fluids again yesterday (banana bag with Vitamins and minerals.) She is still nauseated and some vomiting. Day 20.

Whoa, you just had surgery 4/9, and are eating puree foods 4 days out? Did I read that right? From what I can tell, most surgeons say that you should not start puree foods until at least 2 weeks post op.

I've heard this is common. My daughter had hers removed a year before though. Are you having problems with your gallbladder?

Well, he basically said this has happened in some of his patients and he said "it WILL get better." Meanwhile, she's barely functioning and I'm working from home afraid to leave her alone. I called them again this morning and he's scheduled another x-ray to see if everything is working OK when she swallows. Pending the results they may order more IV therapy and possibly hospitalization if there is something he finds on the x-rays. I just want them to find something to help with the nausea!! I don't know if the universe was trying to tell me something but yesterday I had a severe sinus headache accompanied by horrible nausea. I get these sometimes...but it really made me realize how intense this is for her. I only had to endure it for a few hours. She's had to endure this for 17 days!

Day 17 Post Op Update...my daughter went in for IV infusion of fluids and IV Zofran and Reglan on Friday afternoon. The nausea did not go away and in fact two hours after the infusion, she was vomiting and vomited a couple times a day all weekend barely able to keep any fluids down. I feel so helpless and lost on what to do! Nothing seems to be working and she's going on day 17 without food and barely any liquids. She is sipping some throughout the day but the nausea is so bad she only does this when I force her to drink.

Yes since surgery she's lost 22 lbs. Kind of a brutal way to do it but at least she's got that going for her.
