6 months and 150 pounds later - Half way there
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the encouraging words. Getting to 200 pounds lost by Sept. 20 (my daughter's birthday) is my next goal.

6 months and 150 pounds later - Half way there
I'm 6 months from my surgery now and everything is going pretty well. I've lost over 150 pounds. Of course because I started at such a high weight, I'm only half way to my goal. Weight loss was very fast at the start and has slowed down considerably. I get around 800 calories. I had hit a stall a couple of months ago when I was getting around 600 calories and increasing my intake to 800 helped with the weight loss. It might be time to up the calories again. Overall the Sleeve has been great, there was no way I was going to loose so much weight in such a short time frame. Even more importantly, all the right habits have become ingrained in my lifestyle - what I eat, tracking, walking etc. I just don't think about it too much, its just part of my day. Even if the weight loss stays slow and I only loose a few pounds (I've gone from 30/mo to 20/mo to about 10/mo) a month I'll be perfectly content. The difference in my quality of life is tremendous, even if I didn't loose a single more pound, I would declare the operation a success. Living in NYC, and being able to walk around and climb up the subway stairs without panting and sweating has been awesome. Unexpected good decision: Saving all my clothes while I was gaining weight meant I haven't had to buy new clothes since I've been dropping a pant size every 2-3 weeks. Regret: Not having the operation sooner!

When do you know it's time to focus on maintaining vs. losing
I had a chuckle after reading your message because I have been thinking about this. Even though I've lost 150lb I'm still at 350 and have a long way to go. I think given how much healthier I already feel from where I was, in some ways I already think of myself as maintaining. Not maintaining in the strictest sense of the word but simply I'm not very focussed on losing weight every day. I think you could do the same, keep doing the right things, in terms of eating, tracking and all that but don't focus too much (mentally) on the losing part. Some more weight will probably come off over time anyway. Just my thought. Would love to keep track on how you move forward.

How much weight did you loose in the first 3 weeks?
I lost around 40 pounds, but I had a lot to loose.

Catheter question for men
I had one for a day or so. Like others, no pain or anything but it is weird.

Vitamin D (DRISDOL)
hmmm.....maybe I can ask my Insurance to cover my next trip to the Caribbean. I need all the sunlight to increase my Vitamin D levels!

has losing weight made you look older?
I'm doing well as far as the neck and face go. People usually comment that I look a few years younger. My hair is starting to gray (probably not connected to VSG anyway) but that doesnt bother me too much. If George Clooney can rock the gray temples, so can I!

12lbs more and I will be out of the 400's
Very cool, congratulations! On to 350!!

Will the sleeve really help me with hunger control?
You will get varying answers but it has for me. I do feel "full" after eating 3-4 oz of food, particularly Protein. A lot of times I could go longer without eating but I eat so that I get enough calories for the day. (However I was not a revision).

Should I tell people that I am getting WLS?
I just tell people (if they ask) I'm doing a low carb low calorie diet, which is what I'm actually doing!

problems
I had a similar experience. I got a high fever a few days after the operation (103-104). The doctor gave me strong antibiotics but I couldn't hold them down and would immediately throw up. I had go back to the hospital for a couple of days so they could straight line heavy duty antibiotics. That killed the infection/abscess. I was irritated to be back in the hospital but it was the right thing to do. I've been fine after that and haven't had any issues (close to 6 months post op now)l. Hopefully this will pass soon for you and the Mrs. Wish you the best of luck.

Vitamin D (DRISDOL)
Thanks everyone. I've been taking it once a week for the last few weeks and havent had any side effects (other than my general discomfort with taking any medicine!). Will find out in a few weeks if it helped my Vitamin D levels came back up.

extra saliva?
Yes, for 4-6 weeks after the operation. Went away by itself after that.

This cant be a stall......
You are at a relatively low weight already so weight loss is going to be slower for you. Varying your calorie and carb intake may help. I'm almost 6 months post op and I get around 800 calories now (its usually a struggle to get that much in). Try reducing your calories and carbs for a few days and see if it helps. The other thing I've noticed for myself is that if I am stressed (whether for work or whatever), my loss slows down. I completely understand this is easier said than done but try not to focus on and stress about the scale right now.

pre-op and post -op coffee drinking
I was allowed tea and coffee in a week or two after the operation and I've had no issues with either. I was a 2 or 3 cup a day person as well (in addition to the soda). I still have coffee every day (no soda) but its more like half the size of an espresso shot. I just don't feel like I need more. My energy levels are pretty good through the day so I don't need any "pick me ups".

Do you lose the weight uniformly ?
I lost a lot from the neck, shoulder, upper back and thighs. Things are coming off a lot slower from the abdomen/gut. Its a beautiful sight!!

Where are all my NYC people
Live in Manhattan. Got sleeved on Nov 22 2010. Can actually walk up the subway steps now without panting and sweating like crazy!

Where's all the November 2010's at??
Nov 22 2010 here. Lost 133 pounds after surgery so far (started at 497 though). I was keeping to 600 calories till a couple of weeks ago but I hit a minor stall. I've increased my calories to around 800 and added some carbs and the loss seems to have resumed. I take a tablet for Vitamin D, in addition to the multi vitamin, thats pretty much did. Only regret is that I should have had the operation sooner!!

Diets.
I'm not sure if I qualify for a "serious lowcarber" title but I keep carbs to below 30 gm/day. My doctor actually recommended more carbs (no specific number, but more veggies, bread etc.). It was more of my personal taste and I didn’t really feel like eating breads or rice etc. I can be happy eating protein all day. I'm around 4.5 months post op and even now pretty much all my carbs come from fruits or nuts. I've personally felt that my energy levels are more a factor of getting enough protein in. The low carb aspect hasn't really bothered me.

Seriously?
- VERY frustrated at my doctor!!!
Yeah, try to switch doctors. Like someone once said, remember that half of all doctors finished in the bottom half of their class!!- Has anyone actually failed at this?
mmmmm....Chalupas.....Taco Bell. "Used2b575lbs" - It will be completely your fault if I end up at Taco Bell tonight, for the first time in ages. - VERY frustrated at my doctor!!!
