I am a type 2 diabetic and was on 2 types of insulin 3 times a day. I was banded in December 2006. I initially did not lose a lot at first. I only lost about 20 lbs in the first 6 months. But then my A1C started to lower so my endocrinologist started lowering my medication. As I started to take less insulin my weight started falling off. By July of 2007 I was down 65lbs and completely off of insulin. I was so happy, but then I had eaten something too fast a few times and had irritated the opening. It caused the band to swell shut. I had gotten down to 112lbs but I couldn't keep anything down. I went to the doctor and found out that the opening had swollen shut so I had all the fill removed. After being on liquids for a month I started eating regular again and being a cash patient I could not afford to get another fill for a while. I soon gained most of my weight back. When I got filled again i was afraid of the same issue so I only got a small fill. I was able to lose some of the weight but could never get back to 112lbs. Then I started having very bad reflux so I went to the doctor and had the fill removed again. Shortly after having all the fill removed again I found out I was pregnant. It actually worked out since I would have had to have the fill removed from being pregnant anyway :-) However, since I am a type 2 diabetic I had to go back on insulin while I was pregnant, which of course made me gain a lot more weight than I should have.
So now I have my new baby and had my band refilled. I am going to be smarter about what I eat this time and hopefully I can lose the rest of the weight I gained and lower my medications again.
