Dr. Michael Tyner is a bariatric and weight loss surgeon located in and affiliated with Rex Healthcare. Dr. Tyner has 16 years of experience performing Lap-Band and other weight loss surgery. Currently 56 of our members have Dr. Tyner listed as their Lap Band Surgeon.
Dr. Michael Tyner graduated with honors from Wake Forest University in 1979 with and undergraduate degree in Biology. He completed medical school and his general surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Tyner began his professional career in 1989 in Easley, South Carolina and soon joined Pinehurst Surgical Clinic practice. In 2003 he founded Cary Surgical Specialists focusing on providing general surgery care to Cary and the surrounding communities. In 2007 Cary Surgical Specialists merged with Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina to become the practice of Drs. Tyner, Bruce and Enochs. Dr. Tyner has long been a champion of adapting laparoscopic surgical techniques to traditional open surgical procedures. Through involvement in regional, national and specialty conferences, he has become skilled in advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques in management of diseases of the gallbladder, bile duct, colon, small bowel and in repair of abdominal wall hernias. A special interest of Dr. Tyner’s has been developing improved techniques to repair hiatal hernias and surgically treat gastroesophageal reflux diseases (GERD). He was a guest lecturer on this topic at the 2003 American College of Surgeons meeting. It was with this broad based knowledge and experience with laparoscopic techniques that he developed a mentoring and assisting role while performing bariatric surgery in 2003. Dr. Tyner is a member of the American Metabolic and Bariatric Society and stays current in this specialty by attendance at leading-edge surgery conferences. Dr. Tyner resides in Raleigh with his wife and his son and a parrot. His daughter attends college and resides out of town. When Dr. Tyner isn’t spending quality time with his family, you may find him running, skiing or golfing. In addition to his nuclear family, Dr Tyner spends time with his love of medicine in South America. He spearheaded an ongoing mentoring relationship with Benjamin Bloom National Children’s Hospital in El Salvador introducing laparoscopy thereby reducing pain and scaring on the kids.
