Had my band out yesterday!
Maraki - I had band out and revision to bypass on the 26th. I have been miserable ever since. My left shoulder was put into a not normal position during surgery, possibly had been dislocated. Since my band has been in since 2010 and has been out of place, there was a lot of scar tissue that had to be removed, so my belly was very swollen and large bruises near every incision. Where the port had been was and still is the worst. It is about 3 inch long incision, and is so swollen that the incision is nearly buried. Iam on 8, 5mg oxycodone per day plus 2, 40mg oxycontin er for pain. So far the first week I have been completely useless and have had troubles getting in fluids on protein, the only thing I have positive to say is that I know it's getting better, and my Dr's and support staff have been fantastic. My weight loss so far since beginning preoperative diet is 32 pounds. I don't see it in the mirror but I know when I put clothes on, and friends are shocked when they see me. So for me, all the pain and emotional fighting I've had has been worth it.

Fever after surgery
Thought I better update today, since Thursday I have had a temperature ranging from just over 100 degrees to as high as 103. My Dr was notified on Friday, I was told to continue taking 500 mg Tylenol every 2 to 4 hours, and if I started passing bloody stool to go to er immediately. Dr felt fever was from my body being rundown from preop diet and that some nurse decided it was a good idea to give me a pneumonia shot and a flu shot right before I was discharged. My temp peaked at 103.5 last night and I soaked my clothes through as well as the bedding by 6am. Now my temp is just under 100 and I am beginning to feel better. So I hope that is the case.

Surgery is next week.... I'm doing so bad with this pre-op diet
Will your dr. even do the surgery if you have not followed the plan? Have you lost any weight yet at all?

Fever after surgery
It said to call if I had fever over 101 after checking 4 hours apart. I called the Dr and talked to his nurse. Probably end up going back in now, just waiting to hear back

One more day!
Thank you! Way back in 2010 I had asked for the bypass and was told the lap band was so much better and easier. They told me once I hit the sweet spot I'd be in a whole new world of losing weight. After that it was pure chaos

One more day!
Oct. 26th is my day! I'm scared, I'm excited, I'm nervous, I'm happy, I'm emotional and I am so looking forward to waking up after surgery. I'm probably overly prepared, but better that than having surprises right? The bypass worries me less than the removal of the failed lap band. I keep having a recurrent dream that I wake up from surgery and all that was done was remove the lap band. Anyway, I hope and pray this is the answer to all my prayers of getting helth again for myself and my family. My father died when he was my age, and I don't want my son to have to live without his Dad too, and my Grandkids as well. So the hard part of the journey for me I think is nearly over, after surgery I know I will be great!

Pre op diet body and mind changes
I am so ready for Monday, it cant come soon enough. I am havinga bit of a freak out fest on occasion though. I realized I had gotten regular vitamin B12 instead of sublingual, so that meant a trip to GNC, that ended up being a 200 dollar trip! I got more protein powder, a unflavored and a peanut butter flavor. The peanut butter is pretty darn good! I use the GNC Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60, mixed with water is yucky, but I use Soy or Almond milk, vanilla flavored and they are good. My wife hasa shake every morning for breakfast now so we also got a peppermint flavor. Im sure I wont sleep muchtonightor tomorrow though.

Pre op diet body and mind changes
Much, much better night last night, whew what a relief it was to find out it was a mistake I made and not pain I would have to continue to experience. In hindsight I should have noticed I felt ok during the day after taking morning meds, then by 6pm I started aching in my joints and it got worse as night went on. Anyway, I'm glad I noticed it!

Pre op diet body and mind changes
All of the stress of life and preparing for surgery has caught me in a discombobulated brain function. I have been in so much pain, then tonight as I was talking my nighttime meds I realized I hadn't put my oxycontin in the daily containers since sunday......no wonder I have been miserable, let's see if that makes a difference tonight!

Insurance and supplements
I just tried with Insure Nutrition, which advertises on this site. Had a call from them yesterday but have not heard if my insurance will cover it or not. I think its a long shot but one worth trying. I will let you know if it works.

Pre op diet body and mind changes
Seems like as I get nearer to my surgery date on the 26th, the more of a roller coaster ride I feel like I am on! Things people say to me I am more sensitive too, especially my wife. I'm not sleeping well either. Since they had me stop taking nsaids I've been wracked with pain. I've been taking Naproxen for 10 plus years for arthritis and now to just stop. And I've made some stupid decisions with money as well. As i sit here and think about things it makes me wonder what is in store for me after surgery. The first month restrictions are pretty similar to prep diet it appears, so i am wondering if this emotional roller coaster will continue. Can anyone share their experiences?

Band Removal Approved; BYPASS DENIED!
My general practitioner and bariatric Dr. both sent letters to my insurance company outlining necessity of band removal and conversion to rny without the customary 6 month program. I was approved in two weeks and surgery scheduled October 26th, 4 weeks after insurance approval. In that 4 weeks I was still required to attend readiness classes and go through the typical physical and mental tests required. In the end it came down to quality of life and expectancy of life for insurance company. So, maybe talk to your Dr's and see if they can help push it through. Good luck.

Started 14 day liquid diet today! 2 Weeks until surgery!
Just an update, day 9 and I feel good. It has gotten better each day. Been cooking a lot and pureeing and freezing in ice cube tray, then rebagging for freezer so that after surgery will be easier for the first month! I am so ready for surgery!

A new hurdle crossed! A new beginning of hope, and life!
Where to begin? In 2010 I was 340 and miserable, felt as though I was standing on a cliff hanging on by my toes. I decided to check into bypass surgery as I had a friend who had been successful with it. My insurance covered a local dr and clinic. Well, this is where things went wrong! The Dr. was interested in treating me with the tenants newest, safest, fasted and longest lasting, easiest way to lose weight - the lap band. As many patients would do, I got behind the Dr. and was all in, gastric bypass was left in the dirt. So I went through all the meetings, the appointments, the counseling etc, then it was liquid Pre Op diet and a loss of 25 pounds through that, surgery was in October 2010. I followed the guidelines exactly, but something was wrong, I could feel it. I went in for a check and met with nurse practitioner not the Dr. I was given and adjustment, actually a fill, i found out much later it was filled too full. The next day I called the clinic and said nothing was going down at all. 5 cc's were removed and at clinic I drank some water and it went through ok. A few weeks went by with a me thinking I was just eating wrong, things would get stuck and I couldn't breath, I would have to drink water fast to either push food through or bring it to back up. While this was happening I received a letter from the clinic informing me that my Dr was leaving the clinic immediately, but the nurse practitioner would be there for a month or so still. I felt betrayed, my lap band wasn't working properly and the Dr and the clinic were now abandoning their patients. I called my insurance and no providers were found within 60 plus miles. I gave up, lived with the band in and learned how to defeat the band, still having things get stuck but most times I could push it through by drinking water. My family hated eating with me because it usually turened into a barf fest and ruined dinner for all. 2014 rolled around and I found a Dr closer, only 45 miles away, I made an appointment and went. The Dr was rude and told me I was eating wrong and so on and so forth. He removed all the fluid from band and told me when I was serious, then come see him again. There were no x-rays or exam of any type done. I left feeling low enough to crawl under a dime. I scoured the Internet for information, went to a soft food diet even. But things were so bad I would throw up with cold water even. December of 2014 I went to the Dr because I just felt terrible, weak, dizzy, tired all the time and intermittent chest pains. The Dr told me to lose weight. My wife got very upset and made an appointment at a different clinic with her Dr. January 2015 my wife and I went to my appointment. I told him of the chest pains I was having and was having right then in his office, they took an xray and an ekg. The ekg was not right and the xray showed possible blockage. Before I could finish the testing I got sweaty, dizzy and next thing I know, I woke up in the back of an ambulance. They suspected it was a heart attack. I spent three days in the ecu unit getting tests. It was found my lap band was positioned wrong and was causing issues similar to heart attack. It just so happened that a gastric specialist was working in the hospital for the week from mayo clinic. As the hospital had a policy of no gastric bypasses or weight loss surgery, he attempted to get a needle in my port which was turned, he pulled 6 cc's of fluid out on a band that was supposedly already empty. He told me I needed to have it removed as soon as possible. When my insurance company was contacted, they said that the UW Hospital was now in our network, I made an appointment, got in immediately and well.........here I am, 7 days away from having roux en y surgery and lap band removal. The education and nutritionists and Dr's and support has been overwhelming to me, I am so happy to know that I will now get this foreign body out of me, have the bypass and move on positively with my life and extending the time I have to live with family and friends. Sorry for the long post, but this morning when I weighed and realized I had broke the 280 mark I was extatic and felt free of the lap band monkey on my back.

Major hurdle and I sailed over it! Proud of me!
My wife and I were to attend a relatives 25th anniversary last night. Basically it was a dinner and drinks kind of thing. My wife told me it was okay if I didn't go but she knew many friends would miss me and she also would be sad if I couldn't go. Well, first I was pissed off thinking she was trying to guilt me into going. So we sat down to talk and I told her how I felt and I of course read too much into things, she was being honest and not trying to get me to go by guilting me. So we went, we agreed on a 3 hour time limit to stay so I wouldn't feel crappy and miss taking meds and shake (im in preop diet). So sitting at table with two other couples and they all get food, my wife says she won't eat so I'm not the only one. I told her thanks but go get your dinner. So I sat with 5 people as they ate and I drank Water, I was asked why I wasn't eating and I told them that it was because of upcoming surgery and I needed to be on liquid diet and we all talked about the why part of it. And I survived, no cheating, no feelings of sadness from not eating and best of all, I felt great! On the way home I actually felt on top of the world!
