This is a good question and I can't recall which thread of the forum I asked something similar, like: was there anything you know now (post-surgery) that you wish you were told pre-surgery? The response was to read through the forums and faqs. It's a hard one to answer because everyone's experience is a bit different. All the best to you!

Hi Juba, Here are the post-op tests my surgeon, Dr. Aceves, recommends: SLEEVE PATIENTS 1st check up 3 months after surgery Upper GI X -Ray Blood Work · CBC (to check anemia) · SMAC 24 “Comprehensive Metabolic Panel” (to check glucose, cholesterol, Calcium and hepatic functioning) Optional blood tests: Vitamin D and B12 We recommend that you repeat the blood tests 6 months after surgery the first year and annual blood tests for the rest of your life. Glad you were able to switch and get your procedure. Did you file a formal complaint about the surgeon's office? I would blast the unprofessionalism of his staff and personally send him an email of your ordeal. From a business standpoint-if that surgeon is unaware of the rudeness of his office staff, they could be destroying his business/reputation without him knowing. I can't imagine any reputable doctor putting up with that.

Great thread, just starting thinking about flying and blood clots. I will be on lovenox and will have compression stockings...I hope that will be enough. I'll email the surgeon's office. I still have not confirmed anyone for aftercare. Kaiser was so adamant that I just diet and exercise, I'm not looking forward to asking them to monitor me post-op.

I have surgery in 5 weeks and was told to low carb the week before to shrink my liver, but I'm trying to start earlier. It's really hard, I completely understand. I did Ideal Protein for 5 months and lost 50 pounds but lived in a perpetual state of hunger. It was horrible-led to serious carb-binging after I finally gave up. I would literally have lists of foods I was craving. So, I'm nervous about going back into a hunger-diet situation. You are doing so well! I wish I had words of encouragement beyond "it's almost over." Keep up the great work and feel free to vent-we all get it!

Hi Juba, I have attached my post-surgery diet (for the first 30 days-after that, work with a nutritionist) from my doctor in Mexico. I am still over a month away from getting sleeved, but they have provided me with all info in case I have questions or concerns. The Vitamin information is at the end. I think this one is better because it is for sleeved patients and the attachment above, though helpful, is really for gastric bypass patients which requires different after-care because of the malabsorption of nutrients. well-said! I was watching a youtube video about 2 nurses (best friends) who were sleeved together and their superiors at the hospital were making comments about their surgeries, saying it was a choice and they just needed to diet. The attitude in this country toward obesity is ridiculous.

Thanks for the reminder about measurements! We will definitely need these when the scales stalls I'm scheduled for May 26th and slowing cutting back on carbs and coffee now. I have a 1 week pre-op low carb diet but I thought I would ease into it slowly.

To: DaddyMarie-To answer your question-I am going to Mexico because my insurance company denied me wls based on BMI and lack of obesity-related diseases. I find it ridiculous that Kaiser (known for preventative medicine) offered me a diet/exercise plan. I laughed and said "thank you" and started looking for a surgeon in Mexico. They did not want to hear the long list of diets I have been on since I was 12. They don't care how many years you have battled your weight or how many pounds you have gained and lost over and over. Left in the hands of the US healthcare system, I would have to wait until my health deteriorated to get the surgery I need. I chose to do this now before I fell into diabetes or other issues. I would have rather stayed in the US and had the surgery covered, but I am grateful for this opportunity in Mexico.

Hi to all, I'm in Denver. I'm traveling to Mexicali to receive my vsg over Memorial Day week. Kaiser denied my request for WLS, so I decided to self-pay in Mexico. I am looking for a local support group. St. Luke's is a bit far for me, but it depends on the time/day of week the meetings are held.

Hi Idahospud, I have no information on him. I would search for Dr. Garcia in the Forum and read through discussions on him. I would also privately message patients of his to ask about their experience with him, his staff and the medical facility/hospital. As for aftercare-go to your doctor and just ask for blood work periodically. They can just code it as a physical or checkup. Can you travel back to Mexico the following year for a full check up with your surgeon? Make sure you get all your meds there before you leave. Good luck!

So, can we get an update on your experience? Share so others can learn. Here is what happened this past weekend: I tried on Brooks addiction walkers and loved them in the store. Got them home and went for my 4 mile route to discover the built-in arch support was killing my flat feet/plantar fasciatis. I took them back (sadly). I really wanted to like them, their cushion and lack of impact on the pavement were heavenly. I then went to a foot/shoe store to have my feet analyzed. No shock about the results-flat feet with strong impact (impact will be reduced after weight loss). I was offered a $400.00 orthopedic insert-decided against it. Went to a Dr. Scholls foot kiosk and was analyzed to have the same issues and purchased one of their inserts for $50.00. I put it in my Asics Gel shoes and walked well this weekend with reduced pain. Now, this coming weekend, I'm going to a different shoe store (one for runners) to try on other shoes with good cushion that work well for my flat feet/inserts. I'll keep you all updated!

"Respect the bean" Hilarious but so true; thank you! I am Italian, coffee has always been a part of my life. It always sounds good to me. It would be very strange for me to be turned off by it after surgery. Ok, so if I successfully switch to decaf-how soon after surgery can I have a cup of decaf (black)? I saw that my doctor will send me to the airport with broth and black tea...so why not decaf coffee?

I'm sorry to hear that. I haven't had surgery yet, so I can't offer any advice beyond calling the doctor. Hopefully, you will feel better tomorrow. I recall reading a detailed story of another woman's experience and the first 2 days were the worst. Day 3 and beyond she was feeling much better. Hang in there!
