Wow, my doctor requires would-be patients to agree to an open surgery IF for any reason, including large liver, they can't do it laproscopically. What an unfortunate suprise for you. If you really want this, I'm sure you'll manage the 20 lbs though I know it will be hard. Good luck. I feel for you.

I'm finding that a protein drink helps alieve the hunger pains some. I also have been eating the occasional cheese stick as my pre-op diet is high-protein, low-carb for 12 days, then 2 days clear liquids.

I think that you must be mistaken. If you are having Protein shakes then you are on full liquids that can include:
    shakes
    puddings
    Jello
    yogurt
    strained Soups
    thin soupy cereals

So, today is the day I get to report my first NSV, and I haven't even had my surgery yet!! Yes, I'm gunna brag and I know y'all will love listening.
I am pre-op, and I have been giving up some of my vices over the last few weeks in preparation for starting my liquid diet on 7/23. I am an emotional eater, I turn to food when I need comfort. Today was very challenging emotionally, and I did not turn to food for comfort! As bad as I wanted the ice cream, diet coke, doughnuts, candy, fried cheese and taquitos that I passed in the grocery store with my broken heart, I sassed my big ol booty right by that junk and left without buying any.
Take that bad day! That is an NSV, right? Anyone else have NSV that happened pre-op?
    Happy losing,
    Slenderella

It's very hard when others are eating normally around you, but try to think about how tender your new tummy is, and snacking on the wrong foods could actually hurt you. Sip liquids a lot, and have some sf popsicles and pudding as snacks. Good luck, I know it's hard, but it gets easier! I'm at five months post-op, and I can eat just about anything. Next time you'll be able to snack a bit more, I'm sure.

    Howdy!
So - surgery was MOnday, had to be at the hospital at 8:30 and surgery was to be a 12:00. Hubby and I went to my room and I got into my gown and footies. I still had a cough left over from my pneumonia, so I had to have another chest x-ray and a breathing treatment. 12:00 comes and goes and I don't get taken to the pre-op room until 1:30. Now keep in mind, I am totally freaking out now. Since my original surgery date (june 5th) didn't work out because of me getting sick, I started thinking maybe it was a sign that I shouldn't do it. Then I read an update on here of someone living their moment of regret at day 6! What was I doing!!!!! Couldn't I just lose the weight on my own? This is crazy!
I asked for some type of drug to help my anxiety - nothing! I was freaking out!
They take me back, hubby is left in waiting room, I get a shot of heparin in my belly, a scopaline patch for nausea behind my ear, and they start my IV in the meat of my forearm!!!! Never had one there before! They take me to the OR, I scoot over onto the operating table...I am thinking 'NO NO NO" and they put the mask on me and I am out.
I wake up feeling nauseous. The pain wasn't bad, just sore - and they gave me meds for the nausea....it helped after a bit. I believe surgery and time in recovery was about 3 1/2 hours. So I was back in my room around 5:00. I started on some ice chips because I was so thirsty. I had a morphine pain pump, no drains, no stitches......
I got up to pee and walk at about 7pm. I walked about every 2 hours (because I had to get up and pee). I only drank Water or ate ice chips in very small amounts. The hospital food (broth, sorbet, tea) went untouched. Then they cut me off of all water/ ice ships at midnight so I could do the swallow test the next morning at 8:00.
Warning: The crap you swallow for the test is the devil's elixir! I had to swallow 3 BIG swallows of the nasty bitter crap, turn 4 different ways, then lay on the table as they tilt you back so your head in lower than your feet- and I understand why they do that - but the nausea was the worst after that. That was the worst part of the whole procedure. Terrrible - but glad I did it to check for leaks. At this time, they tried giving me anti - nausea meds by IV, but my vein blew out and it hurt like hell! They wanted to poke me again - but I figured I was going to be discharged in a few hours, and I was drinking fluids, so I politely declined getting poked again!!
I am at home now...did sleep in the recliner and take a pain pill last night. I took prilosec this morning (I was supposed to get Nexium - but my insurance wouldn't cover it and it was going to be $156.00!!) and had to do some disgusting and painful deep coughing this morning. Still had some nausea up until around 11:00am, now it is a brief feeling that comes and goes. I am drinking my water and have enjoyed the unjury chicken Soup (4 oz each time) twice now. My hubby also brought me some G2 grape gatorade on ice to enjoy. My tummy is growling and grumbling a little bit....but not too uncomfortable.
I haven't pooped yet - last solid meal was Saturday.....just can't wait for that!! I also haven't chewed up my Vitamins yet - might start in those tomorrow.
All in all - it was one of the scariest things I have ever done. I am glad (as of now) that I am through it and I feel like my new sleeved tummy and I are going to have to get to know each other. I am down about 5 pounds and my belly is still puffy and swollen.
I hope Ii have put in all the details.....feel free to ask me if I forgot something......
    Laters!

You'll mess up on your journey. I was 3 months, 10 days following a really reasonable pre op diet, no shakes, no liquid only, and I fell off the wagon, sometimes just a little, other times with a spectacular binge. Cynthia Alexander said it best in "The Emotional First Aid Kit". "You will fall off the wagon thousands of times between now and the end of your life. Falling off the wagon is not the problem. It never has been. It's how long you stay off that's the problem". So cheer up and remember that tomorrow is a new day.

So you made some choices you wish you hadn't made. You can decide right now to turn around and start over. We've all been there. That's why we're getting sleeved...our own motivation lacks at times, and we need a powerful tool to help us. That's what the sleeve will do. Don't beat yourself up. You're human. And you are on an amazing journey. Just commit to restarting from here. You're doing great!!

Your mouth feels dry because you are in ketoisis. HORRID bad breath will follow. Good news - you are in a great stage for losing!
Try sugar free gatorade or poweraide to keep hydrated. Protein count is second to hydration at this early stage. Just keep sipping. Have you tried clear protien - I used Isopure 40gm Apple Melon at GNC. Buy one bottle only as your taste buds change.
Each day will bring new changes. Be patient learning your new sleeve. Hugs.

You're not alone. I don't feel physical hunger either and I am two weeks post op today. What I am doing is to actually schedule my meals at times and then take my meals then. I usually do Breakfast between 7 and 8AM, lunch between 11:30 and 12:30 and then dinner around 5:30 to 6PM or so.
Be sure you are getting in enough Protein. Everyone is different on this. Me personally, I am shooting for 70 to 90 grams of protein right now, and between 80 and 100 ounces of fluids while I am on my liquid phase (for another week, then on to mushies).
I made the mistake of depriving my body this past Saturday and believe me I was tired, cranky and really run down. I won't make that mistake again..
Also, Welcome to the Forums and congrats on your new life!

Hi everyone! I am a new member to the site and my surgery is scheduled for this Monday March the 12. I am excited but also nervous about the weeks to come. My main goal after the surgery is to get to a healthy weight where I can play with my beautiful 4 year old daughter without getting tired quickly. I started at 261 and I am 5 foot 4 inches tall. I have lost ten lbs during my two week pre-op liquid diet so currently at 251. I am very excited to have found this site before my surgery!!!!!!

Went to my second Nut appt back on the tenth. Two other people attended who were also planning on WLS. The nut handed out some protein shake samples and talked about the preop and initial liquid diets right after surgery. One of the guys didn't have a clue about how his food intake would change after WLS. He thought the protein shakes -- the very idea of needing them--was ridiculous. He kept criticizing the nut info. It was clear to me he didn't know what he was getting in to. I was amazed at his naïveté and ignorance. It made me realize how lucky I am to have found this site. Thank you everyone for helping me to know what I am getting in to!
