Rozay got a reaction from Frustr8 in Post-Op Food Consumption/'Stuck' feelingI’ll be on the other side in a week but my doctor suggests that you eat what you can within 30 minutes & be done. That keeps potential grazing in check. Consider adding unflavored protein to what you’re eating & he also explains that some people can’t tolerate meat after surgery. Try some diff ways to prepare to maybe keep juicy .... Sous vide? Just a suggestion -
Rozay reacted to argente1280 in Drinking Post OpI'm preparing myself for admission to a 45-day rehab for alcohol addiction post RNY gastric bypass. This is not the first round of treatment. I had my gatric bypass 10/1999 in San Diego CA at the facility operated by Drs Clark and Wittgrove. By nine months post op I lost 106 pounds and maintained that loss through 2008. However, during that time I also began experiencing and struggling with a dependence on alcohol.
Dr Clark explained that once I physically adapted to my new physiology, I could re-introduce various other foods and drinks, determining whether they would compel the infamous "dumping syndrome". Sugar was a definite "no consume", but when I went to my family's traditional Sunday brunch several months post op and slaked my thirst with a flute of champagne, I did not experience dumping syndrome. All I felt was a "super high" from the sip I took. After that, the game was on. My addiction began in earnest. Dumping Syndrome I was warned about. There were no flags waved before me about the possibilities of alcoholism and alcohol addiction. I am waving those flags now!
I first went into treatment April of 2008. I did not complete the relapse segment of treatment because I had scheduled reconstructive surgery for a work related injury. The surgery schedule overlapped that final stage of rehab. I think God walked with me through those years because I remained sober until my mother began dying in late 2016. It was then I began drinking volumes of wine that increased to the equivalent, on average, of 4 bottles of wine a day. Occasionally, I thought drinking vodka a better alternative than drinking wine. Don't ask me why. The mind of an addict. I returned to wine. Drug of choice. Drug of self-destruction.
One day I decided to try and find out why and and how my "take it or leave it " attitude toward alcohol became a "can't live without it " condition. On the internet, I discovered that, as gastric bypass patients, we are unique. In the same way that we each do not necessarily experience dumping syndrome, we do not experience the effects of alcohol the same.
Post gastric bypass, my physiology became hyper receptive to the effects of alcohol, particularly the initial high produced from its consumption. I believe there is no way on this planet that I am unique in this experience. I want others to know, as I now seek treatment a second time on June 13, 2019, that if this is happening to you, don't wait, don't blame yourself, it's your body reacting to the changes made. Be totally honest with those treating you. Only then, hopefully armed with what I'm writing here, can you get the medical help, psychological treatment and ongoing care that will make you whole.

Rozay reacted to Ready610 in June 2019 Surgery Siblings!Good evening, June Siblings! I am finally coherent enough to post. I had my surgery at 12:30 pm today. Praise God, I’m feeling pretty good. Ice chips and water have been going down well. Pain is being managed well. Moved from bed to chair. Waiting on a protein shake to arrive. Went the the restroom with no issues. The only weird thing is that my lip is swollen. I seem to have a had an allergic reaction to something. No one is sure what, but they think it may be from the tube in my mouth during surgery. There were no complications. Although the doc found a hernia, which he took care of, as he thought it might contribute to reflux. Glad he did that. Anyway—just wanted update you all. I’ve appreciated reading all of your experiences and learned from everyone of you. I’m expected to be here for two days due to my hip and knee issues. I’ll post agin after the pain meds wear off? thanks for sending good thought and prayers my way! -

Rozay reacted to logo in June 2019!!! Surgery Siblings!!!Hi June bypassers! I just created an account after lurking quietly while I was waiting to be cleared for surgery. Last week, I got the go ahead. I was scheduled for gastric bypass on June 21 in Ontario after just over a year since my family doctor referred me (and that was after a year of me thinking about it).
I started the Optifast liquid shake diet and have so far made it to day 3. I gagged my way through the vanilla shakes on day 1, and have been experimenting to make them more swallowable. Ice cold water blended with ice, a squirt of sf raspberry flavouring, and gulped down quickly leads to the least gagging for me. On Day 1 and 2 I could only stomach 3 shakes but today I finally managed to get the fourth prescribed shake down. It’s going to be a long 2 weeks, but so worth it. They may taste awful but thankfully they are curbing any hunger, and I’m not craving anything. I even made a dinner for husband and son (solid foods, all food groups!!) this evening and then baked a cake for my nephew’s birthday tomorrow. And not an urge to cheat at all. It’s going to be a liquid diet for me while I travel out-of-province to a conference for work, celebrate my nephew’s 5th birthday, celebrate my 42nd birthday, and celebrate Father’s Day. Lots of challenges to face in the next two weeks! I’m ready for it though.
I’m both very excited for and very nervous about the actual surgery day! And lots of questions swirl around: Have I made the right choice? Will this really work? How difficult will the recovery be?
I’m thrilled to know I’m not alone and that many of you are going through the similar emotions, questions, and challenges.

I have purchased several "snacky" high-protein foods, like protein puffs and chips, in single size portions. That said, I almost never eat them and still treat those like a treat (i.e. going to a movie). I find that mostly I eat basic protein-rich meals, veggie omelet, yogurt and berries, peanut butter and thin, whole-grain toast or apple slices. And because I can eat so little, I find I almost never have room or desire left for snacks anyway. My program encourages whole foods, with a focus on protein and fibre, and pretty much no snacking unless it is more than 4 hours between meals. I love the simplicity of the program that my surgical team promotes.

Rozay reacted to BulletWithButterflyWings in June 2019 Surgery Siblings! So I started my liquid diet today and I'm happy to say that even though it's soooo hard to see my kids eat, I'm staying focused. I keep reminding myself that I have worked my ass off for this and this is what I want.

Rozay reacted to grl499 in June 2019 Surgery Siblings!Hi all ? I still need to go back and read through this all of this thread, but I just wanted to introduce myself!
I’m 24 years old, 5’2 and 245 pounds - a bit young, but I’ve been overweight all my life and have tried everything - fat camps as a child/youth, medically supervised programs, wellness retreats (basically adult fat camp lol), diet pills... I want to start living my life more fully and ward off all the health problems I’ve seen my parents struggle with for years, and VSG seemed like the most effective tool to get me there!
I actually got the call to schedule surgery this morning - VERY unexpectedly - and it’s set for next Friday, June 14th. My doc usually requires a 2 week liquid diet beforehand, but he’s going on vacay and I’m “young and healthy”, so I get to start today ? A tiny part of me was disappointed b/c there were things I wanted to eat before, but I actually think it’s for the best and I’m very excited to start this journey! (we’ll see if I’m still so optimistic once I’m a few days into this liquid diet ?) -

Rozay reacted to FluffySaysForkIt! in June 2019 Surgery Siblings!Hi Everyone!
Just a quick update, Had my RNY yesterday and am still in the hospital. I am doing well, pain is managed and I have been able to get some fluid in. Might get to go home later.
The only excitement was that the entire hospital lost power for 45 minutes right in the middle of my surgery! I guess they quickly unplugged everything and plugged into a generator. I, of course, didn't know any difference. LOL!
Anyway, glad to be on the other side and I will update later.
Sending good wishes to all my June surgery siblings!

Rozay reacted to NEGirl72 in June 2019 Surgery Siblings! Can't wait to hear how everyone who had surgery today is doing! Who is up next? Anyone else going this week? It is hard to go through 34 pages and figure it out at this point.
I have my pre-op anesthesia appointment on Monday the 10th and a pre-op nurse consult on Thursday the 13th. then that's it...I'm in surgery at 7:30am on Monday the 17th!
I'm finding it hard to concentrate at work right now because I'm getting anxious. Thank goodness I don't have to do a two week liquid diet on top of all of the activities I have going on at work and home this week!

Rozay reacted to djgirl19 in June 2019 Surgery Siblings!Had my final tests and class before surgery today. Now I wait for my call Monday night to tell me when my surgery is on Tuesday. Can’t believe I made it here. This time next week I will have a new belly. -
Rozay reacted to FormerUser in June 2019 Surgery Siblings!Quick update! I was getting really frustrated with all the "last suppering" I was doing, and also with friends who wanted to eat with me one last time before my life changes... so I pretty much started the liquid diet on Saturday rather than today. I've stuck to it pretty faithfully except for one small bit of cheese last night to satiate some ravenousness. It's been going pretty well so far all things considered. I've dodged some of the worse "keto flu" symptoms... mostly I've been pretty spaced out, and dealing with mildly fitful sleep and a bit of nausea. I feel like I'm over the hurdle today, but we'll see - there's still a lot of day left to get through!
Welcome to all the new folks, and keep up the awesome work all of you lovelies! I'm rooting for you all!
