Kcoley reacted to gr8ful1 in Large-capacity pouch 6 weeks post opSooooo thankful that when I tried chicken breast (on a Panera salad) yesterday, it went down well. I've also got chicken thighs at home. I have at least 2 more meals left from my leftover salad, but I'm tempted to eat a chicken thigh for lunch to see if it fills me up. I also want to know if 4 oz (by weight) of chicken thigh is anywhere near 1/2 cup by volume. @FluffyChix, I will chop up 4 oz of chicken, put it into a measuring cup, and report back with the results later! LOL

Kcoley reacted to Biddy zz ?️? in Eating more than I should, worried.Hi there
you’ll find many many threads on this site from people saying “I am just a few weeks post surgery, I think I can eat anything, maybe he didn’t really DO the operation” and that sort of thing. You are WAY not alone.
The first few weeks are hard. Like you, my surgeon said I wouldn’t be able to eat a host of stuff that I could eat. You have to CHOSE not to at this point in your journey. And you really should chose not to. The most important thing is you treat your new pouch as real delicate, and start to develop real careful habits - those habits will stick! The pizza thing - shop bought, and I am guessing but maybe with quite a bit of additives, hidden sugar in the sauce - now in your journey is a great time to do a “whole new you thing”. Like what about you buy a rotisserie chicken, shred it, and freeze 2oz portions wrapped in foil. Then you just haul one out, warm it, add a bit of chipotle or applesauce, mash - all clean food, probably 1/2 the calories and a really good easy start in changing to healthy eating habits!
Seriously, I can’t eat more now than I could at 6 -8 weeks out, so the weight does peel off! But now is your critical time to change your habits. I have watched others in my journey and seen that the ones who made THIS change seem to have success. To decide any pizza is a once-a-month treat from now on. That losing weight and being a person who eats healthy, are your only life greats for the next few months... THEN you are guaranteed success!

Kcoley got a reaction from Flutterfly in 4 days shy of my 1st surgiversary! What an amazing post and such an encouragement to us in the beginning stages❤️❤️ -

Kcoley reacted to Flutterfly in 4 days shy of my 1st surgiversary!Hey everyone! I cant believe a year has flown by so fast. I know when I was pre-op I used to seek out these threads to read other's experiences, so I wanted to share mine too.
My start weight was 277 the day I scheduled the consult for bariatric surgery, and I was 255 the day of surgery. The first 3 months were a bit of a whirlwind. I dropped 20 pounds in the first month, and I thought it would stay that fast, boy was that some realistic thinking on my part.
As real food was reintroduced during my second month I learned what the foamies were...oh my goodness, so not fun. I lost 10 pounds during month two and I remember feeling discouraged and having to reassess my motivation for this surgery. Having to remind myself that this was a change for the rest of my life and that it was okay if the weight didn't just fly off, because if I kept working with my body, then my body would have no choice but to become healthy.
The next month I lost 9 pounds and learned that if I didn't chew my food really, really well, that it could get stuck and hurt like hell until it made me vomit. This was not a fun time, but alas I learned, and learned relatively;y quickly.
Month 4 came and two things of note happened. I lost 5 pounds and felt confused and a little lost as to what was happening with my body. Also, my hair started falling out like there was no tomorrow!
That became my new normal for awhile. 5 pounds a month, hair falling out. Somewhere around 8 months out my hair loss stabilized, but by then I had lost about 2/3rds of the volume I had. Biotin never helped, but I took it from the day I was cleared to begin vitamins post op.
Around March I was 6 months post op and I had my first month with no loss, where I actually gained. I was aghast. I had this weird feeling like I wasn't going to get where I needed to be unless I started working harder. So that was the point where I finally changed.
I started counting every macro, and working out 3 days a week in April. Initially walking and increasing in length/intensity. That was the beginning of my adventure into exercise. I currently run/walk in intervals a 5k a minimum of 4 times a week. I have never felt stronger or more alive. I was the girl who only ran when chased, I had no idea that underneath all that weight was a body that felt happy when it ran. A brain that felt at peace when it focused on my breathing.
I'm still losing at the rate of 5 pounds a month, total weight loss since March of 2016 is 110 pounds. Biggest change has been my brain. I stopped worrying about the scale. It goes down because I'm living the way I am supposed to be. It doesn't have to be big numbers, because this is the way I live my life now. I don't know if that makes sense anywhere except inside my head, but I hope you get it. I only this week made it into the "overweight" bmi category and I have 27 more pounds to go before I am considered to be of a healthy weight.
Loose skin? Yep! I'm not even mad about it. To be honest I didn't expect as much on my thighs and thought most of it would be around my midsection, but it's everywhere. I don't think it will ever bother me enough to have it removed, but only the future knows for sure.
Dumping. Now to be fair I had my gallbladder removed a few years prior to gastric bypass surgery, so I already had issues with dumping. Bile buildup has a laxative effect on me. If I go more than 12 hours without eating, then just a sip of water can send me running to the bathroom. Fats don't typically bother me and I avoid sugar because I don't like the way it feels when my insulin spikes and then drops. It's scary and not fun. I get fuzzy and light headed, my stomach feels blah and my heart races. I'm human though and I challenge my biology on occasion. Ice cream doesn't love me anymore. It melts in my pouch and foams back up and just feels like it's sitting at the top of my esophagus and making me burp little foamy ice cream burps...I think the only reason I am okay with halo top is because the sugar alcohols scare me enough that I only ever eat a tiny bit because I don't want to live in my bathroom lol.
Support systems! These are so important. My spouse is amazing. He's my biggest cheerleader and my companion in all things, including exercise! Make sure the people in your life only want what's best for you.
Current diet is low carb (under 20 grams a day) moderate protein (60-80 grams) and moderate fat. This will likely be how I eat the rest of my life and I am okay with that. When I do consume more sugar, my brain starts to crave sweets and I feel like I have to fight with myself. For me personally it's not worth it anymore. That last sentence is a huge nsv for me. It's so weird and amazing/awesome to be nearing 40 and finally feeling like I'm not powerless to food anymore.

Kcoley reacted to GreenTealael in Teriffying experience blockage of foodYes relax,
Try and let food be just food now, with no control over you.
Try to eat most things very moist and don't take unnecessary chances.
Try to let go of those negative thoughts about the past and concentrate on the present and future

Kcoley reacted to E.S in Teriffying experience blockage of foodHi
I feel like crying... today I had my first experience with blockage of food in my esophagus.
It felt like I was about to have a heart attack or something , I was on the verge of passing out.
Stupid me thinking I would push it down with some yogurt since you can’t drink.. I made it worse.
My heart was palpating really fast , I was getting dizzy , I was shaking on my feet until I put a finger in my mouth and vomit most of it out... what came out was a weird thick slimey substance
I had left over tilapia fish from yesterday which was dry. I knew before hand it would be a risk of me eating it cuz of the dryness but here I am , still eating it.
2 bites and I went through hell.
I’m 3 weeks and 4 days post op.
I still feel something blocking but I’m drinking water....
Food is my enemy. Before the surgery it was my enemy and i abused it made myself morbidly obese and now after surgery It feels like it tries to kill me.
I know I’m super emotional.
I never experienced being thin and care free, seeing people who are thin and care free of what they eat makes me so jealous and makes me feel so low. I have to watch out for the rest of my life of the stuff I put in my mouth. Life is unfair but we deal with it.
This by far worse than dumping syndrome. I have learned my lesson. No more tilapia fish for me for awhile.
Thanks for reading xoxo -
Kcoley reacted to Ronnysgal in Having the reversalThanks Pops me as well. Each day it gets closer, I get more and more nervous about being put to sleep. Silly I know but I have a condition called Brady Cardia meaning a very slow heart rate. Before they put me under they have to give me medication to increase my heart rate, as it generally runs in the 47 to 48 range so the anesthesiologist has to be very careful. But they have done well so far.

Kcoley reacted to Ronnysgal in Having the reversalHello Bariatric nation. Well I am super excited to say that my gastric bypass reversal is scheduled for next Wednesday. It took the insurance company only 24 hours to read the doctors notes with test results and ER visit documentation to decide that the procedure is medically necessary. I long for the day I can keep food in and have energy and the stomach ulcers will heal and I can stop taking so much medication. The surgery is on 09/05/2018 I will let everyone know how I feel and the results as time goes on.
Thank you to all those that have had such kind words of encouragement.

Kcoley reacted to Matt Z in First dumping experience - 12 days post opI had a few dumping episodes of varying degrees early on, however now, being close to 6 months out... I'm finding that I can eat a bunch of things I really wish I couldn't without any dumping when you'd think there would be. Some folks call me lucky, I don't think I'm lucky. Now I have to worry about the will power to not stuff.... like my youngest brought home a new flavor Oreo cookie. I had 1 serving (2 cookies) and expected to have to pay for it... yet, nothing happened. Then I ate 4 of them the next day expecting SOME form of negative feedback... still nothing.
Dumping sucks, but it's that sucky feeling that I was hoping for to help assist with the whole cognitive reassignment associating those foods as "bad" and it's just not happening any more.
Just wanted to provide my experience with dumping and let you all know that, it doesn't always stay the same, what I dumped on early on, I no longer dump on.

Kcoley reacted to Danny Paul in One Year AnniversaryToday makes one year since my Gastric Sleeve. I lost 60 lbs and made my goal weight. I've learned a lot about myself and my eating habits. I also realize that each day has to be taken one day at a time as far as food is concerned. One bad day doesn't ruin all of the next days as one successful day doesn't guarantee future success. My WLS has been a great tool for rapidly loosing the weight and giving me that weigh loss success. The hard part started when I reached goal and that is to maintain the weight loss and continue to be healthy. One year ago I was a type 2 diabetic, had high BP, gout, Gerd and was in a continual downward spiral as far as health was concerned. Today my diabetes is in remission, BP normal, gout and Gerd both gone. Also gone are all the medications I needed to take daily in order to keep these diseases under control.
I know now that I am a compulsive eater. The WLS didn't cure me of that. Through therapy and Over Eaters Anonymous (OA), I'm working on it daily. Each day, I try my best to keep to my meal plan which was devised by my nutritionist, surgeon and Internist. Each day away from surgery I can feel my restriction loosen and I can't rely on it solely to keep my weight off. I do have restriction and it is very helpful but I can see that I can eat more. I have to work hard at not eating more and thus getting back into my old eating habits.
The WLS has helped out tremendously but now it's up to me to build on the successes. I know that I can slip up and get back to where I was before WLS. With the help of my therapist and OA I think I have a fighting chance. Time will tell but at least I know that I have a problem and I'm trying my best to meet it head on. I wish each of you continued weight loss success and good health and most of all if you think you need help don't be ashamed or afraid to get it.

Kcoley reacted to E.S in Food AddictIt’s the best decision of my life to admit I’m an addict , and to stay away from junk food and soda for the rest of my life. Lord knows what’s going to happen but I will do everything in my power to never touch it again. And god is my witness ???? -
Kcoley reacted to Danny Paul in Food AddictIt was seven months post op. I was on vacation and there are these pastries that I can only get there. I told my wife that I would only eat one. I ended eating one each day and with a cup of coffee. Usually I would rationalize my behavior by saying I deserve to cheat while on vacation and I did lose a lot of weight. Instead, I felt that there was something wrong. Why am I acting like this? Didn't I go through WLS to get healthier? Why am I sabotaging my new found health? When I got back home, I sought a therapist who diagnosed me as a compulsive over eater. She also advised that I try Overeaters Anonymous. Today, with the help of my sponsor and others in my OA group I'm coping and working on my compulsion. It's a struggle everyday because I as a compulsive over eater can't eat like a regular person and I need to be mindful of it. I just celebrated my one year anniversary and realizing that my restriction isn't as restrictive as it was. I do have restriction but I cannot rely solely on it to maintain my weight loss. Luckily I have the support and tools OA gives me. I work my steps and take each day one day at a time. Don't be afraid to seek help if you feel you need it. Look up OA on the web for a meeting near you.

Kcoley reacted to Born in Missouri in Food AddictYou're been too hard on yourself. You're in pain, and you're giving yourself an undeserved beating.
You may very well be addicted to food, but you could also be in mourning. I miss not being able to enjoy food. I can't eat enough of anything to feel as though I'm eating a worthwhile portion. Plus, nothing smells or tastes the same. I feel as though I'm missing out on something that brought me a good measure of pleasure.
I've lost weight with very little effort. True, I'm still not getting the protein or fluid intake required. For the first time in weeks, I'm probably consuming more than 250 calories. I'm pretty sure I've doubled my caloric intake, and I try to make sure that those calories are mainly protein.
I'm not prepared to swear off all junk food. Fortunately, I don't have a sweet tooth, but I do like plain potato chips. I think it's the salt I'm mainly interested in. I don't think it's terrible to have a few chips on occasion. I actually don't "want" more than a few either.
I go through periods of self-hate, too. You're not alone, E.S. If you'd like to talk privately, I'd be happy to talk to you. I'm sure several other people here would be happy to talk to you as well. Let us support you. Let others in and give you some comfort. You are a worthwhile person. I'm glad you posted your feelings. That's a healthy step in the right direction. (Keeping negative feelings to yourself is not healthy.)

Kcoley reacted to E.S in Food AddictHi everybody. I’m 18 days post op and so far I had one dumping episode because I ate to fast. But other than that, it’s pretty much smooth sailing so far (fingers crossed it continues to be) very thankful for that.
Today I realized more than ever I’m a food addict. And I admit today I’m a food addict. I was in denial. And I always didn’t understand why I went back to eating junk once I tasted it again after a long period of dieting. ? and now today, I wholeheartedly admit I’m an addict!
I promised myself that I will never eat junk food again and drink fizzy sodas.
Once I go back to eating on bite, I will go back for more. Come on, who can eat one bit of a cookie and leave it in the cookie jar??? Nobody!! Why would I kid myself ???
I can’t allow myself to see me slip back in old habits. It’s not worth it, I feel imprisoned in my body, the layers of fat, hiding the real me. Feeling heavy every day, painful ankles cuz of the weight , social isolation and feeling ugly. It’s not worth it for that taste!
Just like any other drug, I have to completely stay away from it and I have to *accept* it.
Trust me , these passed couple of days has been hard with feelings of resentment and self pity. How life is unfair .... even flashbacks of eating junk. Thinking about junk food , even thoughts of sabotaging myself with eating “slider foods” I felt bad.
The gastric bypass was my last ditch effort , I can’t afford it to not succeed.
I hope you guys are doing well on you journey. I hope mine will be successful and stay successful for the rest of my life. Because that’s truly it, it’s a life long battle whether one has to admit or not.
When did you admit to yourself you have a food addiction? And what were the steps you took to overcome them?
Thank you for reading ??
