RossMom got a reaction from Missy4391 in May 2024 Surgery Buddies ?Hi everyone My surgery date is 4/30 so close enough to join the May group ?
1. I am excited to start this journey! I do have anxiety as well because I had a procedure done years ago that didn't work well. I had a lap band done back in 2005 with NO SUCCESS. The band was nothing but a problem. It flipped twice and the port moved so all of the saline was removed, and it's just been hanging out with me ever since.
2. For my hospital bag, I plan on wearing the same comfy clothes home that I wore in. I'm bring my crocs, chapstick, a long phone charger, a couple protein shakes because I was told by my surgeon that their options were not the greatest, and a heating pad.
3. I am excited to finally get some of this weight off of me!! I have lost the 60lbs (and gained the same 60lbs) since 5th grade, I swear. My son is 14 and I'm excited to be able to finally ride amusement park rides with him.
We got this!!

RossMom reacted to OutdoorsGirl in Protein shakesTry isopure unflavored no carb. I purchased it at Harris teeter grocery store. It doesn’t add a flavor. 25g protein a scoop.
-
RossMom reacted to NickelChip in Protein shakesI am enjoying the chicken soup flavored shake from Bariatric Fusion, which is funny because when I tried it pre-op, I thought it was terrible and nearly threw it out. Now, it's great. Celebrate and Unjury also make protein shake soups. I was also able to mix the unflavored Syntrax Nectar into a cup of organic tomato soup and it blended really well.

RossMom reacted to Elizabeth21again in April 2024 Surgery BuddiesHello friends,
Update: Surgery went very well. Doctor was very pleased with it and post-op, Tomorrow is one week and I am feeling pretty good so far. Following the protein and water intake recommendations. (Using a medicine cup to remember to sip and not gulp -- that's helping a lot to establish this new habit.) So far this recovery has been easier than my hernia surgery and my VGS some years ago!
I hope everyone is having a good experience as we embark our on this new path together!
Best wishes,
Elizabeth

RossMom reacted to NickelChip in 50 and over crowd?I will be turning 50 exactly 1 week from today and had RNY surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago. The surgery went well and I'm doing fantastic! If it weren't for the incisions on my belly and the desire for a quick afternoon nap when that wasn't my habit before, I would almost forget I had surgery at all.
So far the recovery has been far easier than I imagined. A few days of pain managed with Tylenol, some fatigue, and that's it. My blood pressure, which has been high even with meds for a decade or more, has been back in the normal range without meds since the minute I woke up from the anesthesia. I'm not sure age is as important as your general health, immune system, etc. I've been lucky in that I generally don't get sick when others do, never had food allergies or digestive issues, and am in fairly good health except for the obesity related concerns I was hoping to reverse/ward off.

RossMom reacted to TinyBink in March 2024 Surgery Buddies! My nutrionist approved me to go on the soft food phase. After protein water, shakes everything just tastes so much better! Currently going to try and see how much of one whole egg, one egg white and a bit of avocado I can get through,

RossMom reacted to JennyBeez in March 2024 Surgery Buddies! My RNY gastric bypass surgery was at the blink of dawn on March 19th, 1 night in hospital afterwards. Two days of clear liquids at home before they approved the full liquid diet.
I feel like I'm doing mostly good?
Definitely chillier all the time -- I went from being someone who'd wear tank tops around the house in (Canadian) winter to being never without a sweater or throw blanket.
The full liquids, I don't hate it. My team gave me instructions to have a minimum of 1 protein shake a day, slowly moving up to 2. Beyond that, as long as I'm getting 60-80 g of protein per day, they don't care if its whey protein added to soup, or greek yogurt, etc. I also caved and bought a couple protein soup mixes / oatmeal from BP. Bacon and cheese instant soup was a life-saver those first few days. I had my first tomato juice today, which I never used to be a fan of but it hits different after being on shakes for so long. (I was on these disgusting Medi Meal shakes for 2 weeks pre-op and haaaated every minute of them)
My last bandages came off today. Mildly grossed out but trying not to think about it. ?

RossMom reacted to JennyBeez in March 2024 Surgery Buddies! My team suggested putting the spoon down between mouthfuls, and waiting 3 to 5 minutes between each tablespoon for at least the first month. I found at first it was easiest to do while walking around my house: stash my soup at the table, stop to drink a tablespoon of it, and walk back and forth for few minutes. (It also kept me walking more often, cause I know it's good for me but sometimes my stomach muscles just don't want the jostling)

RossMom reacted to NickelChip in Coffee on pre-op diet?Every program will be different, but your best bet is to wean off it as quickly as you can. Decaf is usually fine, so you may start doing half-caf tomorrow with the goal of getting to all decaf before surgery. It's less a problem before surgery because you can make yourself drink extra water to combat the dehydration coffee can cause, but it's impossible to do that after, so ideally you don't want to drink anything that makes you get dehydrated. On the other hand, some programs let you have one cup of regular coffee per day. Just don't go cold turkey if you want to avoid a killer headache. I spent two weeks weaning myself off caffeine before my pre-op diet started.

RossMom reacted to ShoppGirl in What to take to hospitalThe only thing I can add is that an extra long charging cord came in handy in my hospital (although some say it wasn’t necessary at theirs). Also pajama pants were good to slip on for walks since the hospital gowns open in back. I did see some people with two gowns on (one forwards and one backwards) I’m guessing because they didn’t have any bottoms.
Like @NickelChip, I wore the same thing home i came in. A pair of comfy Track pants and a tee shirt. I just brought fresh underthings. I bought my tablet as well so I could read (download a couple books ahead of time) but a regular book would be better since things do get misplaced and stolen sometimes and you will be separated from your stuff. They put mine in a locker during my surgery and beought it to me once I was in a room.
I also wished I had brought a sleep mask for my surgery. They closed the door and it was dark but I had to leave the bathroom light on so that I could find it. I brought one when I stayed with my husband in the hospital and it was perfect for that same light. I also bright headphones because I played Netflix at night when I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t want to disturb anyone else but the nurse informed me that others couldn’t hear my tv if I wanted to use that.
In terms of toiletries, I brought them all but I wasn’t allowed to shower before I left so maybe just a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and some baby wipes/ face wipes and dry shampoo or a hat if your super oily like me. I was told not to bring my meds except for one that they didn’t have at the pharmacy. Kinda makes you wonder why you can’t just bring them all instead of laying two prices but that’s another story.
I did put a pillow in the car that my husband would be picking me up in. Ooh and they should tell you not to wear jewelry or bring cash. They have to inventory everything you bring and they actually thanked me for packing light.

RossMom reacted to NickelChip in What to take to hospitalYou will be wearing a hospital gown and given non-slip socks, so all you really need is to wear something to the hospital that is comfy with a stretchy or loose waist you can wear home, and bring clean undies and socks. Also bring a toothbrush, travel toothpaste, hair brush, deodorant, chapstick, and lotion.
Don't bring meds or fluids as they will need to administer those to you and record them in your chart. But check on this because if you are taking something unusual, they may want you to bring it. In my case, they just gave me my daily thyroid medication from the hospital pharmacy.
Bring your phone and charger and a book, maybe headphones if you'd rather listen to music.
Hospitals are kinda gross, so the less you bring, the better. I had an incident where my IV came unattached and I ended up with watered down blood everywhere, which would have ruined any pillows or blankets from home.
Oh, I brought a small pillow for the car ride home that is made for abdominal surgery (search Amazon for hysterectomy pillows) and can velcro to your seatbelt for extra comfort for your incisions. It was nice but not 100% necessary. For home, I had a weighted heating pad that I loved for sleeping. You will also want a bottle of liquid adult strength Tylenol at home for pain.

RossMom reacted to BlondePatriotInCDA in What does a typical day of eating and acitivity look like to you?I'm apparently more anal retentive than everyone else who's responded so far, but most are in maintenance so they can and have learned what works for them.
My daily intake is very structured because I really don't like cooking or trying to figure out what to eat. Plus, unfortunately I'm a slow loser.
Breakfast:
Either I have 1/2 cup high protein overnight oats made with Fairlife Core Power milk (42g protein) but only use half of the bottle so 21g for a total number of 30g +-
or
2 low fat turkey bacon slices and 1/2 bottle of my fairlife protein milk 30 mins later, either meal with a half cup of coffee 30 mins beforehand.
Lunch:
1/2 c homemade turkey chili with 2 tablespoons Fage Greek yogurt 14g+- protein total or
Pacifica organic soup 1/2 cup
Dinner:
Either the turkey chili again with added 1 tablespoon cheese on a low carb high protein tortillas or
3oz chicken (20g protein) cut into cubes with G.Huges chili Thai dipping sauce (low carb - 2 carbs, low calorie - 5) 2 small florets broccoli, 1 tablespoon skim cheese and Fage Greek yogurt on a low carb high protein (7grams) tortilla 32+- total grams protein
Snack:
1 no sugar added fudgecicle (40 calories) or 1 tablespoon no sugar added chocolate chips (70 calories) or
a fiesta string cheese (70 calories) or
Homemade "brownie batter" or "chocolate chip cookie dough" protein balls (neither really taste like the title says, but its what they're calling them on the recipes ?
This works out to:
80 grams protein
800 calories
50 net carbs
19 grams sugars
Fat 16 - 28g
Boring I know, but as I said if I think about what I want to eat to much..its not healthy foods or foods I'm allowed to have 6 months in. I'm trying to eat to live not live to eat.. So I keep it regimented so I know where I stand. As far as exercise I was walking 3 miles a day with light weight training..but I'm having hip abductors and hip flexor issues now plus my bum hurts (I never contemplated before surgery losing weight would make sitting/bum hurt) so I'm starting PT on Monday so the exercise has stopped for now.

RossMom reacted to summerseeker in Protein shakesFully skimmed milk with added dried milk powder or protein yogurt is a great alternative and the protein count is great. Much cheaper too. My surgeon was very against protein shakes. I added banana and / or sugar free nut butter to mine.
