ANewStart4Me got a reaction from GreenTealael in ANY DOCTORS TO explain medical terms like common channel length in bypass??
I’m normally a big drinker and would scull my drinks in one go. So this constant sipping is taking practise. I hope I have it better by the time summer hits. Few times I have done a slow gulp trying to quench my thirst and by the time you hit the third swallow you feel the pain and have to back off. It doesn’t last long but it does let you know to not keep going.
You will breeze through this. You have so much more information under your belt and are prepared than most people. 80ml seems crazy little but I am not hungry at all. At first it was a little weird when I would eat and not feel that full feeling, I don’t really get that satisfied feeling like I just had a really good meal, but I’m not dissatisfied either. You know when you have eaten too much but it still isn’t the same feeling of being full. Mentally that was probably the hardest bit at the start and head hunger. I would always snack on shapes after the kids went to bed and same time every night I would crave them even though I wasn’t hungry, just head hunger from the bad habit. Now I have a drink or chew my Vitamins at that time and it gies away, and I can happily eat a few bites of a meal and walk away not seeking that full feeling.
Message me anytime, I will support you anyway I can.

    Yeah, I’m in Victoria.
Pre op I was just on 100 at my heaviest. I then decided to take out top cover health insurance and start the ball rolling. In the 12 month wait period I tried duromine, dropped 12 kilos in 3 months but the lack of sleep just made me feel crazy. Was doing good and dropped another 2 kilos off duromine. Then the weight crept back. Over about 10 weeks I went from 86 to 96 kilos. So by the time I saw my surgeon I was so glad he had me booked into hospital 3 weeks from our first visit.
So far eating most things has gone really good. Only if I eat one bite too much I vomit a bit. Drinking enough is the bit I struggle the most with. Atm I can eat almost 1/2 to 3/4 of a small yoghurt now. So around 80ml. How much my taste in food changed was the biggest shock. The kids got kfc the other week, I stole one popcorn chicken, one chip, and a little pinch of skin and it all tasted disgusting, and I threw it up within few minutes. Tried a bit of ham cheese and Tomato pita bread and was horrible. Things I would normally love taste vile, I really hope it stays that way forever haha.
Try to have a variety of shakes and sugar, free jelly, different stuff to make smoothies when you come home from hospital. All the things I drank a lot of the first couple of weeks I can’t stomach now. They ones I switched up often I have no problem with now.

I have been happy with it so far. Had the typical 3 week stall but it only lasted 1 week. On surgery day I was 94 kilos, I only weigh myself on mondays, trying not to be ocd about the scales, so 5 days ago I was down to 81 kilos. First 2 weeks was the biggest drop 5 kilos, then it has been a consistent kilo a week once I got over the stall.

That is how much of the small intestines they bypass. 100-150cm is what my doctor said he normally aims for. 200cm seems extreme. Shorter length Without being a doctor and only watching them on tv haha, I assume you absorb more from what you eat etc. going longer you risk malabsorption but I would also guess you might dump easier.
My doctor did 100cm on me, first couple of weeks even this length dumping was crazy on liquid drinks like Protein Drinks, ensure drinks, up and go’s. Last 4 weeks has been really good until I drank an up n go too fast and instantly dumped it. I go Tuesday to check my Vitamins to make sure I am absorbing enough.
Here a link from one of the melbourne clinics that explain touch on length a tiny bit. http://www.melbournebariatrics.com.au/laparoscopic-gastric-bypass.html

Oh yeah I'm SA. I've been overweight since like teenage but getting older and some random on bus told me about the surgery and insurance so I did the same got the cover waited 12 months out.
Saw the surgeon roughly 3 months prior to the 12 months and my surgery is in just over 3 weeks but I felt like trying my own diet early.
Went from 146 to 126 in 5.5 weeks very strict diet almost no carbs. No sugar.no fat. High Protein. No junk at all..
Surgeon was very happy and said it will make surgery much easier for him and my recovery should be better with lower BMI..
this my first ever WLS & I've been reading this forum for over a year 1000s of posts
Feeling confident but a little scary to think how little volume you can take in the first few months like you said 80ml? And drinking like a litre a day vs so much I drink atm...
But I really feel this bypass Will give me the greatest chance of long term success!!!!

I am gonna go against the grain here. I would suggest opening up to them less. From what you write here they don’t sound very open to actually listening to your opinion unless it aligns with theirs. Will telling them how you feel actually change anything?
Being the black sheep of the family myself I understand how hard of a role it can be. The way I have learnt to deal with it is, I make general small talk and keep things pleasant, anything that is important to me eg tattoos, haircuts, extra children, things that effect my life and the lives of my nuclear family(husband and children) I only discuss with my husband. If I don’t want to feel my outside families judgement in my decisions, I don’t involve them in my business. You can’t change how other people think or how they will react. My husband and I are so much happier now. I am so less stressed. Sometimes it is hard and I fall back into old habits. Being the black sheep, you always seek your families approval so sometimes you give them more information then you mean too when things are going good, then it bites you in the ass.
I honestly have a much better relationship with my outside family. What they say and do doesn’t seem to hurt me as much when they don’t approve of me anymore. And not letting them into my nuclear family relationships has made my nuclear family so much stronger. My husband and I are a solid team now and united on all fronts.

I'm going to have to agree with ANewStart4Me on this. While your family seems much more extreme than mine, that is one of the primary reasons I didn't tell my family about my surgery. To this day, none of them know. When I realized that my outlook on life and their approach were different, I started keeping them at arm's length.
The only person you can change is you, so you need to adapt to them in the best way that works for YOU.
I also recommend that you consider formal counseling. We're here to vent and give our "Dear Abby" versions of advice, but formal counseling might help you to work through this and develop some good coping mechanisms.

    Hi August friends!
I was sleeved 8/5 and have been doing so much better! Been getting down liquids with no problems and eating good too. As of today I've lost 45 lbs. The only thing is, I've hit an almost 3 week stall. I cant seem to lose weight no matter what I do. How many calories is everyone eating? I track all my meals and at first I was eating around 900 - 1000 calories a day with 80 -90 grams of Protein but since i hit a stall I cut my intake to about 600 calories a day. I've been eating very clean, sticking to tuna, chicken breast, skim milk, and haven't cheated or had anything I'm not suppose to. Even with the decrease in calories I'm still not losing weight. I know this is part of the journey and my body is probably in shock mode because i lost so much weight so fast but its just frustrating.
Lol anyways, I hope everyone is doing great, especially mentally. Its crazy how much this surgery changes things. I use to think about food all the time and feel hungry 24/7 and now it doesn't consume my life. Its just nutrition I need to live. My self care has definitely improved because of this!

    To whom it may concern.
I got to see my surgeon again yesterday.
It went really really well I'm still 4.5 weeks out from my date which is confirmed as 10/28 and I'll be the first surgery after lunch that day.
I've started my own preop diet early and I'm down 38lbs currently at 282lbs aiming for around 185lbs.
Surgeon says any weightloss will definitely help him do the surgery and help my recovery.
The BMI doesn't matter they use the first BMI that's it but he said it's good I've lowered my risk factors and I'll be in my own private room and private bathroom facilities in the hospital.
I'll be looking at least 3 days as long as I'm getting liquids down and walking well but if any issues could be longer.
I do have some kidney issues so will need extra monitoring before I leave as I live on my own.
In response to the technical he said he usually makes the bypass 120cm long whatever that means; he said it's restrictive but not Majorly so that you can still live with some Vitamins and to be most careful to get enough Calcium and Vitamin D for the bones as the bones can possibly have issues long term if not taken care of early.
He was really happy with my weight loss and to see how committed I was so that I don't need to see him until surgery day
He just said keep up the good work and basically in giving my body a Head Start by losing weight before the surgery!!
    I'm happy. I'm excited.
now all I need to lose to be at my final end goal is 100lbs that's it
cannot wait to get this surgery and start a new life and a positive future!
I'm doing great with shakes and can tuna and Frozen veggies then some days ill have some blueberries and strawberries
With my Protein intake and very low carbs I'm finding that I'm not craving much at all so I'm happy just hope the restriction comes from surgery as well.
Anyways that's my latest news I've just gotta keep myself positive and committed until surgery then I'll figure it all out AFTER surgery in regards to taste buds and such.
Thanks again to everyone who has offered their kind words over the last 12 months of my journey!!
    Good day.
    Mikey

I went to my one month post op appointment earlier this week. I was terrified that I was not losing weight fast enough. Well, apparently, I was pretty wrong! I was shown the graph for the first time. There was a line for an estimated 70% of excess weight (the average that this surgeon expects from his patients), another line for 100% excess weight. and then there was a line for me...aiming for greater than 100% of excess weight.
While I was very surprised that I was well ahead of the curve, the prospect of losing *that* much weight is pretty terrifying to me.
Outside of that my energy is great, I have been cleared to exercise, have solid foods as tolerated, and pretty much go back to my every day life, minus binge eating, carbs and sugars. I am so thankful that I had this done well in advance of the Holidays! I have so much time to practice self control, to train my mind into making better decisions.
I hope everyone else is doing just as fantastically as we move into 1 month post op and beyond!

Ok, so I went through all the months of nutrition classes, blood work, stress test, EKG, and x-rays. I am revising from the sleeve to the bypass because of really bad acid reflux and a hiatal hernia. After Aetna kept giving me trouble I was losing all hope of getting approved. Yes, after all the work I did they said my appeal was DENIED! However, I received a letter in the mail on Friday that ordered Aetna to approve my surgery within 72 hours. Medicare had stepped in and said basically that Aetna is my fiduciary in the medical insurance and they are responsible for keeping me healthy. Due to the fact that bypass is proven to stop reflux Medicare overturned their decision and I am now on my way to getting a surgery date. I am praying that above all other things the bypass is good for that it just relieves my acid reflux and helps me loose another few pounds. I had my sleeve June of 2016 and I'm still doing good. I've gained about 25 lbs. back so I hope it helps me lose and I'm positive it will, but haha to Aetna and don't let these insurance companies dictate what happens with you're health. Stay vigilant and keep pressing forward to your weight loss goals. Thanks for listening.

I would go to a shake like ensure that has more carbs. Protein Shakes are much lighter on cards so you will lose weight if you can’t get enough other food in the day. Ensure is better for maintenance and gaining.

I’m still in the early days which is when most people regret the surgery before they start seeing the big changes. And i have no regrets. It is a big change but so worth it. Hardest part for me was the pre op diet. I have tried a few little tastes of things I used to love and seriously they just tasted disgusting to me and I spat them out. Was such a relief. Some days I struggle to drink enough Water but I am slowly getting there. I an taking chewable vitamins, hopefully that will be good enough to make sure I get what i need from them. My surgeon is having my labs drawn every 6 weeks to start with, then my doctor will take over after the first year. If you have concerns about Iron or anything else always ask your doctor to draw labs and check.
Sounds like you have worked very hard to get here. Everyone I am sure had a moment where they thought am I doing the right thing. I would do this again in a heart beat. I am loving the change to my life even in this short time.

I no longer had any jean shorts I could wear and a busy season for my daughters gymnastics season starts next week. I quit wearing leggings months ago as I was tired of trying to find shirts to cover my butt and stuff, so it was either find new tunics which really would be a waste of money for me IMO or a pair of shorts. So exciting getting them since I normally had a 22 or 24 depending on the brand and I bought a pair of 20's. My baby girl was giving me high 5's lol. I also cleaned out all my clothes that I haven't worn in over 3 months. I figured I hadn't worn them in that long and it would be long before they were too big so I'm making space now. What started it all? I couldn't see any loss at all visually, so I tried on a pair of pants that I were too small when they came in the mail. Now they fit WOOT!
