sparkly_keeks got a reaction from KimA-GA in Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?
I had a bypass earlier this year and so far zero regrets. My weight loss, even with bypass, has been slower than average due to a screwed-up metabolism from years and years of dieting. I know if I had gotten a sleeve I may have had slower weight loss and more stalls, so I am happy with my choice to get the bypass.
Since the surgery, I have a really strong sensation of restriction, next to no hunger, food aversions (sweet and fried foods) and I can taste things way more intensely. I can eat very small portions of junk foods like ice cream (1 or 2 tablespoons). Anything more than that and I just feel icky so I just avoid them. I lost my sugar cravings, which was the cause of my weight gain in the past. I hope those sugar cravings are gone for good because not having them will help a lot with maintenance.
The only struggle so far, however, is dehydration. I have to be so focused every day on meeting my water goals. If I don't, I wake up in the middle of the night with the most awful dry mouth. Other than that, all is good.

i don't understand why your surgeon didn't push you towards bypass instead of sleeve if they thought your PCOS would create problems down the road.
I am so sorry you are going through with it, and even more sorry our health care system sucks especially after what happened this past summer... unfortunately its going to be harder now for you to get a hysterectomy.
There was a list circulating on google, of all the doctors in the US willing to do hysterectomys without hoops, they would just submit to your insurance for approval and I will pray for you that the PCOS issues is enough or that they will atleast put you on something to put you into early menopause to keep it at bay

Not to be alarmist, but are you sure it is real weight gain and not something causing you to gain water? I had this happen a number of years ago, where I was legitimately NOT eating enough to gain fat, but the scale was increasing. I was dealing with a heart issue at the time, and the weight gain was from that. I had to get on diuretics until my heart was in a better place.
Again, not trying to be alarmist in any way, just throwing out that maybe something else is going on and it's not the PCOS. Perhaps you've become more salt sensitive? During the timeframe I noted above, I really had to become aggressive about cutting salt. Not so much anymore, but at that time it was like pouring gasoline onto a fire. It's just usually weight gain of that kind is water weight, unless you are gorging on food day in and day out.

I would wait. taking out a loan for almost $20K takes a long time to pay back... about 5-7 years. idk what the terms of that 0%APR is but i do remember that if you end up missing payments or paying late that it reverts back to the extremely high APR that care credit charges which is close to 30%. and with a loan that big that would take decades to pay off. I paid Cash for my surgery and it was around $18-20K. Only because my insurance specifically excludes it. otherwise i would have waited. Rather have $20K in my bank account if i only have to wait a year.

When I turned 50, my friends at the exercise class I go to got me a t-shirt that I loved but never wore because it didn't quite fit. I didn't want to make them feel bad, so never told them unless they asked. That was June 2020. My first class back after surgery was yesterday and I wore the shirt and they noticed. Very happy moment!

Before sugery I was a massive sugar addict. Then, when I was 3 weeks post-op I ate ice cream. Against the advice of my surgeon. I paid the price for that (cold sweats, racing heart, violent vomiting). Even though all that happened, I still craved ice cream and ate it again the next day. Afterward, I reflected on what I had done and I felt so ashamed and mortified with myself. But the bad feelings only made me want to comfort myself with more sugary foods.
On the third day, something changed in me. I decided to just forgive myself for those 2 mistakes and move on like it was no big deal and consider it part of the learning curve. I threw all the remaining ice cream down the kitchen sink.
I am now 7 weeks post-op and my sugar cravings have all but gradually faded. I decided that I will allow myself to have a small portion at the 3 months mark. But the way I am feeling now, I doubt I will do that.
Forgive yourself for your mistakes. You are still unlearning a lifetime of habits and addiction and it will take some time to get the hang of it. Head addictions are powerful beasts. As long as you make the decision to try and march in the general right direction you will get there eventually.

Ooh yea some people love to tell those types of stories. It’s almost as if those people NEED to have a heavy friend or two in their life to make them feel better about themselves and one that “failed” again post WLS is even better. They need to think of obesity as a moral failure of sorts and that’s how they are superior because they aren’t as heavy. Stuff like that gets to me for a moment from time to time but when I really think about it, i just honestly feel sad for them. Think about what must be missing in their life for them to have things so twisted.

The 1st couple of months are the hardest thing you will ever do in your life!!!! You have sent your body into shock! Hormones are dumping into your system like crazy! Your hair will be falling out! Your skin won’t know if if should be oily or dry! Your body is going on the wildest ride of it’s life, it’s crazier then childbirth! But in 6 months I want you to come back and tell us how you feel! You will have more energy then you know what to do with! You will be excited because the clothes in your closet will be falling off of you! You will be shopping in a whole different area of the store! You will have to get a ring guard so your rings don’t fall off of you! You will be able to shave your legs & paint your toenails and tie your shoes! You won’t feel uncomfortable exercising!
The world is gonna open up & you will forget how awful the 1st couple of months were!
You gotta trust all the reasons you ever thought of having the surgery in the 1st place.

People don't wait for me on the stairs anymore. Before I lost weight, if I was going up or down stairs and someone else was coming in the opposite direction, the other person would wait until I got all the way to the top or bottom because there wasn't enough room for both of us to pass. Now, when I'm on the stairs and someone else is going in the opposite direction, they often just keep on going.
Also, when I was big, it seemed like people would sometimes move over when they saw me walking down the hall -- sometimes practically diving out of the way as if I was going to mow them down (I really felt quite offended, TBH). That doesn't happen anymore, either.

I am the same way. I will welcome any loss after years of walking/running 4-5 miles a day and never losing an ounce. I am already so thrilled at how different I feel just from the hernia repair. 2/3 of my stomach was in my chest for probably 15 years and I didn’t know. Today I’m 4 days post op and I am amazed at this feeling of calm that I haven’t experienced in forever. I wonder if it’s because things are back in place where they should be.

This is sort of a NSV and sort of a society fail. [emoji849]
I've always been a very friendly, talkative person, who will talk to anyone, and I noticed after I got really fat soemtimes when I would talk to people they would not be friendly back or act uncomfortable, and people hardly ever started conversations with me. It caused me to develop a bubble over the years and talk to fewer people. I thought people had just gotten less friendly overall.
We just joined our local rec center and I was at the pool with my son yesterday, and I had several people just randomly start conversations with me. This hardly EVER happened when I weighed almost 400 pounds.
I can't even call this a victory because it's really sad that those same people might not have talked to me before, even though I'm the same person.
Based on the way I look on the outside, suddenly I'm worth talking to.
Of course, I could be just imagining all of this, but I don't think I am.

I had my surgery May 18th. I have had zero complications, and only a little pain on the first day after surgery which was managed at the hospital. I was tired the first week after surgery, but I have been feeling more and more energetic with each passing day. I'm also dropping around one pound per day. I am off work right now and go back to work on June 13th and I feel pretty confident that I can handle it.

I’m not that old (I’m 39) but when I went to Starbucks the other day the guy at the counter greeted me by name. I was taken aback a bit but just took my coffee and smiled… but I’m so blah at 6 am that I’m just not focused enough to notice details like that.

i got to work and one of my students noticed there was a heart and a phone number on my Starbucks cup. ?
i teach fifth grade so you can imagine how crazy the girls went over the information that the Starbucks guy has a crush on their teacher ??‍♀️.

it is odd when you’ve gone your whole life with men never looking at you like that ??‍♀️
