You know I've researched for over a year, spent countless night watching other people's journey, taking class and I still feel as if I fell short. For the first time since my surgery (Jan 22nd) I broke completely down, I knew it was going to be hard but you never realize how truly difficult it is until you go through it. Tomorrow is my birthday and I've been a bit depressed so I got my favorite Indian dish pureed and just couldn't...it made me cry. The struggle of eating and constantly feeling it go to my stomach or swallowing to much air and getting gas, having to count and count and count. Don't forget the protein, don't forget to hydrate, or your vitamins. I want to do everything right but I feel like I'm coming up short. I can't stand the taste of any food or protein drink, trying to hydrate is a b***h because I keep thinking I'm going slow and end up getting bad cramps from it....and those monstrous bricks they call vitamins make me gag or vomit ugh. I know it'll get better I know this will pass but being in the present and feeling like I'm getting no where is killing me. And the mood swings don't make it any better...I'm incredibly sad or angry all the time. I don't regret this at all I just wish I could make the progress I'm supposed to be making and enjoy it. I've lost 25 pounds since surgery so I'm grateful for that, its just such a long and lonely process since no one around me understands. They say they do but they really don't.... just needed to vent. Thanks for listening.

Thank you! Congrats on the 20 kg, shopping is definitely something I'm looking forward to. While I always "made it work" when it came to clothes. I'm def looking forward to the convenience factor. Cheers to increased confidence!

30 in 3 weeks? That's so impressive! Congrats. I went back to school last year and ever since I started this journey my grades have been through the roof lol. It's crazy where our focus goes after virtually eliminating food!
What have you been doing for purees? The thought of pureed meat and fish scares me lol. I was vegan when I started this, but found it hard to maintain.

those kinds of feelings are pretty common the first few weeks - but it'll pass and all the food/hydration/etc routines will get much easier, as GreenTealael said. I remember feeling the same way the first few weeks - but it does get easier...

Change vitamins if you can. Try to split them in half, get tasty chewable versions or even liquid & patch varieties.
Hydration, food and life WILL get easier with time. You are in the very early stages post op so please give yourself a little grace. You don’t have to be perfect just consistent.
    Good Luck !

So, I haven't really told many people about my surgery. A few close friends know, my mom, and my sister. I tell my mom everything so she knows, but out of my few close friends, only one was really supportive--everyone else was a bit hesitant. They all struggle with their weight, including my sister. So I don't like sharing my victories as they all start feeling bad about themselves. But today was huge and I want to share with someone other than my amazing and supportive mom. I laid down today to do sit-ups and I could actually see and feel my ribs starting to show through. I thought it was too good to be true so I videoed myself and lo and behold, I could see them quite prominently. I haven't seen them since 2015/2016. I am so excited! I can't see them standing up, obviously, but man was it a surprise laying down. Just really happy! I also tried on a shirt that was too tight before and now it is baggy.
Anyway, that was my NSV. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I'm so sorry to read that you're struggling. I've had depression most of my life and nothing frustrates me more than people saying "I understand" or "get over it." Everyone's journey is different. You can read and research and read some more, but I don't think anyone can ever be truly prepared for the incredible life-changing journey WLS truly is.
It's totally okay to feel what you're feeling right now. I'd daresay it's more common than you think. Thinking of everything you've had to give up, the post-op pain, even how this new tool will change your life... that can all be very emotional. If you had surgery locally, is there a support group you could join? Do you have a friend/colleague/doctor/etc outside of your family that you can talk with?
Happy Birthday! I hope you enjoy your day.

    Hello,
I'm incredibly new here but i've been reading people's posts. I still considering weight loss surgery and I will most likely do it due to my years of weight gain and loss and my family history of health problems associated with obesity.
I just wanted to say hello and tell you that I think you are courageous. You made a really big decision for yourself and from what I understand it is normal to grieve or feel symptoms of depression as you consider the many ways your life has changed.
You chose surgery for a reason. I think that finding new ways to celebrate ourselves can be a challenge to anyone.
I wish you happiness and the drive to hydrate ; )

broth. I swear by broth for the liquids stage. Heat it up, add some spices if you want, whatever works. I had less of a hungry feeling with broth than anything else. And, I couldn't STAND the Protein shakes, crystal light, or protein Water. They were all too sweet for me. Warm broth was my lifesaver.
Once you're up to mushies, any kind of soup blended up was good, including wendy's chili. Instant mashed potatos, blended chicken noodle soup, and egg drop soup all tasted great, too.
Someone here suggested ice chips if the urge to chew was overwhelming. I can't do it because of sensitive teeth, but it might help that urge for you.
Good luck! This stage WILL pass and you'll soon be looking back and thinking "that wasn't so bad". It does take awhile to get through it, though.

I'm about 7 days post op and I'm finding it troubling to drink them. First few days was fine but now I can only stomach 2 to 4 oz a day. It's like after I drink it this taste floods my mouth and makes my stomach turn. I don't physically want to vomit but the taste makes me ill. It's as if drinking them now on an empty stomach makes me not want them at all. I have an appointment next Friday, any tips or suggestions? I feel like a failure just starting out

davis29 reacted to AZhiker in Gerd w/ Sleeve VS. Dumping w/ Bypass
GERD is serious. It can lead to cancerous changes in the tissues. I chose bypass because of my GERD and have not regretted it a bit. There might be a little malabsorption going on, mostly fat, but I don't think it is much. Most malabsorption starts resolving on its own as the jejunum takes on a more absorptive role. Another reason I chose bypass was BECAUSE of dumping. I wanted to have as strong of a deterrent possible to sweets. However, almost 2 years out and I have never dumped, even with sweets. From what I've read, the majority of bypass patients do NOT dump. IMHO, if you have GERD, go with bypass. I actually had Barretts esophagus from the GERD, along with a nice little, precancerous Barrett's polyp which was removed pre-op. Since surgery, the Barretts has completely resolved, which I think is pretty amazing. I'd take the risk of dumping anyday over the increased risk of cancer from unresolved GERD. I would not want to undergo a second surgery, either.
