PurpleBloom reacted to Taira in No weight lossGood evening,
Just wanted to give an update..
I’m a month and 2 weeks out of surgery. My scale reflects only a 4 pound weight loss but as frustr8 and gradycat mentioned I’m losing inches. In fact I’m fitting pants that are 2 sizes smaller.
So please keep following the diet and stay encouraged.. the weight loss will come.
Thank you all again for boosting my spirits. -
PurpleBloom got a reaction from Newbeginning57 in April 2019 Surgeries!Hi everyone!
I'm so sorry I'm late to the discussion. I've wanted to join you here since February but my dietician discouraged me and I listened to her. I really regret it now. It's so hard to find people in "real life" that understand what's about to happen. Even those who I thought were "getting it" are proving to be a disappointment. I was talking to a good friend today about how hard the first few days of the liquid diet has been and she said "oh yeah, I know, just like stopping alcohol." Well, I've never done that, but I don't think so. Alcohol isn't necessary to maintain life; food is.
Anyhow, I wish everyone here wellness and courage!
My surgery is April 9th. From what I can tell that makes me #6? I'm nervous, scared, wondering if I'm doing the right thing. My main goal is not weight loss but putting diabetes into remission and my surgeon assures me that based on what has happened during my preop period I will leave the hospital on no diabetes meds!! (During the time between my first visit with him and last visit 5 months later, I worked really hard, got my eating disorder into remission, started eating intuitively, started exercising regularly, lost 30 pounds and cut my insulin need in half. A primary care doc asked me if I wouldn't like to keep on that path for a while before going for surgery but I said no, I don't think weight loss alone offers very good odds at ditching diabetes.)
I've struggled pretty intensely with this liquid diet at times. I have a personality that wants to know all the whys (beyond just shrinking the liver and getting used to eating less) and I feel like my dietician has been a bit less than forthcoming. I finally got her to explain that it puts us into ketosis and now that I've done some reading about ketosis and understand that my body and brain aren't being STARVED, I'm feeling less anxious and better able to tolerate the discomfort.
Again, I'm so sorry to arrive late.
Oh, and to answer the questions, I think they show up on the sidebar (I'm new to the forum stuff), except that I don't know a goal weight, isn't that nuts? No one ever discussed it and I didn't think to ask.

PurpleBloom reacted to sheena128 in April 2019 Surgeries!April 11 is getting so close. The nerves are kicking in. I lost about 14 pounds and I didn’t even start a diet. I think I’m just so anxious that I get nauseous and don’t eat. My final preop appt is Wednesday and I meet with the nutritionist and surgeon. That day is gonna make it even more real. -
PurpleBloom reacted to beautifuldaymonster in April 2019 Surgeries! Also -- at the risk of babbling and takin' up the board, lol -- why am I not hungry? This is clear liquid day 6 of 6 and the end of two weeks of purees and proteins to do a liver shrink. I was ravenous yesterday evening but yet today so far I feel indifferent to food. If this is what post-op life is like I so want this... I want to stay this light and free

PurpleBloom reacted to beautifuldaymonster in April 2019 Surgeries!I'm in Southern California so I bet you and everybody else are far ahead of me in nesting and cleaning, but I'm all done now and have even packed my overnight case of post-op hospital stay goodies. (It's a tiny case lol so nobody yell at me, I looked at everyone else's here and took notes, lol) Now just sipping no salt low sodium chicken broth and Vitamin Water and waiting down the clock to tomorrow. Gonna take a magnesium citrate in two hours (yuck) then shower with the pre-surgery cleanser they gave me. I shower with it again tomorrow... then off to the hospital! (Edited for brevity etc)

PurpleBloom reacted to beautifuldaymonster in April 2019 Surgeries! It's weird: I couldn't toss out my favorite two pairs of "fat jeans" today. I've read the term "food funerals" here. I kind of think there need to also be blue jean funerals...

PurpleBloom reacted to SeattleLady in Surgery today: Feeling hopelessBefore or after my sleeve, I should have been in counseling. I had too many things going on including grief and loss.
I was sick both mentally and physically. I would tell most individuals going through this process; Please seek profesional mental health support. Select someone who has experience with Bartrics.

PurpleBloom reacted to Selmeeka in Surgery today: Feeling hopelessFirst of all, I wish all the luck in the world today. I’m going in on Wednesday. It’s a very nerve racking thing to go through.
My surgeon recommended this course to me that helped me have a better relationship with food. It’s called intuitive eating. If there is a class teaching this near you, I recommend taking it. It really is a lifesaver.
You mentioned that you celebrate and reward yourself with food. Maybe finding other ways to reward yourself, new clothes, shoes or something that you have wanted for a long time.
I come from a family where no matter the occasion, sad or happy, food is always the center of that. That’s been the tough part for me through all of this. My mother is a self classified “ feeder”.
i have faith in you! If this is what you want then you will succeed!!

PurpleBloom reacted to Rexcom in Excellent, up-to-date, simple, straight-forward self-help for eating disorders and moreHi All,
VGS is a tool.....not a cure. Most long-term morbid obesity sufferers who have failed to lose and/or maintain weight-loss have emotional eating disorders. Most people who have VGS that do not address the emotional issues are much more likely to fail at weight loss and improving their health. Reading the research and spending a lot of time reading the accounts of others makes this very apparent. Finding a good therapist with a background in eating disorders is the best path to take to assure your long-term success. I'm working with one now.
I've come across some materials that can be very helpful. In fact, these are materials that can be used as a self-help but are often used in therapy. They are very brief workbook-like modules that must be worked through in order. It is best to take a module a week and fully absorb it....without jumping/peeking ahead to other modules.
Here is the material for eating disorders: https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/Resources/Looking-After-Yourself/Disordered-Eating
Here is similar material for other issues such as anxiety, depression, and self-compassion: https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/Resources/Looking-After-Yourself/

PurpleBloom got a reaction from FluffySaysForkIt! in Surgery today: Feeling hopelessOh no, I'm sorry you're feeling so badly, especially right before surgery!
It isn't hopeless, though. You're still trying!
Have you tried therapy and/or eating disorder treatment? That's the only way I know to change the relationship with food. I think I've finally done it but only after some years of treatment, pain, and a lot of hard work. In fact, I couldn't get approved for the surgery until I had proven my eating disorder was in remission for 6 months...
Treatment is out there. It's definitely not easy but it offers healing.
In the meantime, good luck today! I wish you the best. ?
