    Trouble with malnutrition

I had issues similar to yours where I started with a sleeve in 7/2020 my body started going through severe issues that I couldn’t even hold down a sip of water causing me to vomit uncontrollably in the end of 8/2020 I went to use my restroom and I collapsed. My surgical team had me enter a rehab to try and help me build up my strength and put in a PICC line. I was in the rehab for 6 weeks and the team started to work with my insurance and got permission for a revision to a bypass.(my brain started to have issues with retaining short term memories due to lack of nutrition) Had the revision to bypass done in 3/2021 My body took forever to start to regulate and start to work the way it is supposed to. I pushed myself to do as much work with my brain to get back to “normal “ as much as possible and I’d say I am about 90% recovered. Physically I’m back to “normal” most days occasionally I’ll still have a nauseous day or some dumping but I was just at my dr last week and I am down just shy of 200lbs stay strong you will get through this Family members ask me if I could rewind time if I’d still go through with the surgery and I say I may have opted for the bypass instead of the sleeve but absolutely because if I didn’t get that weight off I know without a doubt I’d be dead within a few years so even with all these issues the surgery was worth it.
  2. Please bear with me while I ramble and get something off my chest. I started this journey with a gastric sleeve surgery July 2019 things went bad quickly I was vommitting uncontrollably and very rapid weight loss I started losing my mind and had little to no muscle control by September. After a severe fall I was put into a rehab hospital and they decided to change the sleeve to a bypass. The revision was done 2/2020. After the revision I was discharged to my home. I’ve started regaining memories and muscle control. By June 2020 I was able to walk independently (with a walker for balance) by September I was able to forgo the walker unless it was long distances. Even with this crazy pandemic I’ve been pretty upbeat and happy I am literally half the size I was when I started this weight loss journey. Yesterday I went to my obgyn appointment they were complimentary and saying how I don’t even look like the same person. Then I got my after office report. I always read over them in case there is something I forgot or missed. The first line goes this is an obese female.... damn I’ve seen that word with ever dr appointment for more than 30 years but it has never bothered me like it is this time. I mean I’m literally half the person I was before and almost died to get to where I am now what else do I have to do to get rid of that word?

    Depressed after dr visit

Thank you everyone for your encouragement and kind words. I’m not sure why it hit me so hard. I mean I can look down at my body and still see I have fat on my frame. I didn’t start this journey to hit a certain number on the scale. It always was to get healthy And to be alive cause I knew in my head I probably wouldn’t make the age of 50 going the way I was going and now I know that I have a much better chance of being alive for the future. I am still overweight per the charts I am finding online but not technically obese. I will discuss it with my dr the next visit. I allowed myself this weekend to mope a bit but did not allow myself to fall into old habits of comforting myself with junk food. I vented here and then took an exercise class in my home to get my self in a better place. My husband and daughter both noticed something was bothering me but that I wasn’t using my old methods of comforting myself and gave words of encouragement. I still am a bit bitter seeing the word but have decided not to let that defeat me or define me. I am still me and the new me isn’t controlled by a five letter word. I will be the best me I can be and that me rocks!
  4. I had a sleeve July 2019 due to a lot of issues had a revision to gastric bypass 2/2020 had not had any candy at all in that timeframe. We had a 21st birthday celebration for my daughter and I avoided all cake, soda and other goodies at the party but while cleaning up there was one leftover peanut butter cup left in the candy dish and I rationalized it in my head that well it’s peanut butter and peanut butter is a source of protein (I know I was making excuses to myself to eat it) so I popped it in my mouth and chewed it up. About 5-10 minutes afterward I started feeling sweaty and nauseated (not like I need to vomit just an icky feeling). My family has a history of diabetes (not me personally but my dad and brother are both insulin dependent. Do you think since I had the surgery I better get checked for diabetes? (I don’t plan to try and eat candy again but wasn’t sure if this is a “normal” reaction to introducing sugar to my new body or something else)

    Water

I struggled also but bought a 64 oz bottle on Amazon with hour markings since then it’s been easier for me to make sure I am getting it all in. While sitting at my desk at work I can visually see if I am getting behind on my fluid intake and try and pick up my pace but if I slack a little during the day I make sure to catch up before bed. I tried just doing it with a normal cup or water bottle but found myself slacking and ending in a deficit so the hour marks help keep me on track.
  6. Congrats on getting your revision scheduled. I’ll keep my in my thoughts
  7. July 2019 I had a sleeve surgery lots of complications had a revision to bypass done February 2020. Been recovering and healing at home but obviously with the pandemic not a whole lot of socializing happening. Now my family (large extended) has figured out a location and way to have a get together and still be able to ensure safety as much as possible. This is taking place tomorrow afternoon. I am a little nervous about when it’s time to eat. My family shows love with food and lots of it. (And based on the fact that I started this journey at 350+lbs you can probably guess they don’t always prepare the most healthy food choices). I plan to make sure that I avoid the food area as much as possible and to drink my water and will have my nausea medicine in case there is anything that sets my stomach off. I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings by not eating their food but I have absolutely no interest in making myself sick or binging on bad for me food. I am sure I will be okay and am just having a case of nerves since the is my first “party” situation since I started the process of having wls and even though it’s all family I am worried someone is going to be watching every bite I put in my mouth. Someone, anyone please tell me I’m not crazy and it’s normal to be worried how it’s going to go.
  8. Is the ban on having a drink with your meal a lifetime commitment or at some point is it okay to start having drinks with your food again? If so when?

    Food stuck in throat

I am now more than 6 months out from my revision surgery from sleeve to bypass. I can eat normally and have not experienced the “stuck” food syndrome again. Did you advise your team about the stuck food feeling since your most recent surgery?

    The Waiting Game

I went through this about a year ago. I am pretty sure I got labeled a troublemaker not with my practice but with my insurance. I called my insurance to ask for an update status on the paperwork 2xs a week (they told me it could take up to 3 weeks for a decision)and to ask if they needed anything additional submitted to make the approval an easier process.

    Clothes!

I’m one year out from my surgery and still hate spending money on clothes but the weight loss has slowed considerably now. I’m hoping for another 30lbs loss but if I stay where I am now I’m okay. Once I hit a few months at a consistent weight I’ll probably take a friend and do a major closet makeover. The one good thing about this pandemic is that it allows me to live in sweats or leggings and T-shirts and not having to focus on business casual that would typically be required for my job.
  12. I had a sleeve done in July 2019 couldn’t keep anything down due to newly developed gerd (never had an issue prior). Lost so much weight in the first 3 months (100+ lbs). Had to have a pic line put in to get my nutrition levels up to where it was safe to operate on me again). Had a revision to gastric bypass in February 2020. Since then I’ve had 3 instances of vomiting but the first was what I assume was leftover acid because that happened still in hospital after revision. The second and 3rd times were my own fault drinking to quickly after eating. I also had a hernia repair at the time of my revision. I originally wanted the bypass but my team talked me into doing the sleeve as my insurance requirements were easier to get approved with the sleeve. I will say I am very thankful I had the revision done and am feeling much happier and healthier now in the 13 months since my original surgery I’ve gone from 350+ to 175 and from 4x pants to a pair of large today. I worried after the horrible outcome from the original surgery that I might be making a mistake having the revision but today am very happy I did.

    Food stuck in throat

I am sorry I forgot to include that in my answer. Yes I can eat and drink normally now. I actually went to a tasting for my daughters wedding last week which I know even 6 months ago would have never been able to happen. I know it’s hard to imagine while you are going through it but it can get better. I’ll keep you in my thoughts and yes let me know what your team says.

    Food stuck in throat

The bariatric surgeon ordered the scope but a gastroenterologist did it. I was under sedation when they did it so all I remember was having a slightly sore throat when I woke up. I do not believe I had xrays with contrast at the time of this complaint but truthfully with the complications I had going on some of the procedures and tests timeframes get a little blurred. I can only speak for myself and my experience and it took almost a year for me to get back to feeling like myself and I will be honest I wasn’t the best about making sure I reported all my symptoms and following up with my team where I probably should have. I attribute that to me being so used to health issues being blamed on my weight that I just figured it would eventually get better. I was speaking with someone the other day and was asked if I would recommend wls to others and I honestly answered yes but with the caveat that they were warned to report anything that doesn’t feel right to them to the team. After my revision that’s what my surgeon advised my husband and myself They were like don’t feel like you are being a bother please if something doesn’t feel right or is bothering you call the office it’s easier to document and correct when we know as soon as possible.

    Food stuck in throat

I had a sleeve surgery in July 2019 and within the first two weeks it felt like I had a piece of hamburger stuck in my throat and could not get it cleared. It stayed that way for months. I ended up with additional issues that caused me to have a revision from a sleeve to a gastric bypass in February of 2020. (I am not saying you need to have anything changed just explaining my journey). In the process to having the revision my dr did a scope of my throat and almost immediately after that the closed up feeling of my throat and “stuck” food feeling went away and has not bothered me again. I would strongly suggest you speak to your team and explain what you are going through. I can Not emphasize enough the importance of getting your nutrition in and know how difficult that is going to be if you can’t swallow.
  16. I started with a gastric sleeve surgery done in July 2019 weighing just shy of 350lbs. I had a lot of issues and tough recovery and it required a revision to a gastric bypass at the end of February 2020. I do not own a scale in my home as I would obsess over the number and with the whole Covid situation I was not going to in person dr appointments but today finally I was able to go and I weighed in at 187lbs!!!! That number seems crazy to me. I was over 200 at the age of 12 and I’m now 46. I want to laugh and cry at the same time. This last year was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever been through and I am not back to being 100% healthy yet but I am so excited to finally be under the 200lb mark.
  17. I had a sleeve in July 2019 got incredibly sick after the surgery. Developed awful reflux developed a hernia from vomiting literally lost my mind from a lack of protein after all the vommitting couldn’t walk ended up in a rehab hospital still couldn’t keep any food down as a life saving measure they converted my sleeve to a bypass in February 2020 and fixed the hernia at the same time. Since the conversion thank god my memory is slowly coming back and my strength is also slowly returning. On the plus side I am doing much better with being able to eat and haven’t vomited except 2xs since the revision With all that being said due to all my issues I had no insurance requirements that I had to meet. The drs just scheduled the surgery I arrived had the surgery and repair and then was hospitalized for 3 days afterward to ensure everything worked the way it was supposed to.
  18. I was sleeved on 7/15. Not had any real difficulty before now. Only vommited once since surgery. However on Sunday I started feeling very nauseous and vomiting. I thought okay maybe I ate something I shouldn’t have (but couldn’t think of anything that would have caused it). Each day this week I’ve been experiencing the same thing but getting progressively worse. I called my team because a lot of what was coming up was stomach acid/bile and the prescribed pantoprazole. I’ve been taking it and while the stomach acid isn’t coming up anymore now I am dry heaving. This is t once or twice a day I mean it has happened at least 10xs so far today. I’m waiting on a call back from my team again but has anyone experienced anything like this?
  19. I was sleeved on 7/15 and am at a soft food stage but have mainly been sticking to liquids. The last three days it feels like there are little pieces of food that are in my throat. It doesn’t matter if I drink, swallow, brush my teeth, gargle it won’t go away. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions to get rid of it. It’s driving me nuts.
  20. I was sleeved on 7/15. I am having difficulty getting my protein in as I hate the taste of most shakes that I’ve tried. On my surgeons plan I on purées but am not hungry. I can eat like a Greek yogurt for lunch and maybe a bite or two later for dinner. I am doing okay with my water everyday. Now I am having problems sleeping I get like 4-5 hours a night. I am trying to get enough steps in every day. Anyone have any suggestions on things I can do better (I have an appointment with my team Friday and plan to discuss all this with them but am hoping for some help in the meantime)

    Shave legs?

I have psoriasis and don’t shave because every time I do I end up with cut open bleeding spots. I didn’t and no one on my surgical team cared

    Newbie

I started 2/14 with my first appointment and surgery was 7/15 for my sleeve. I would have been able to have surgery in June but my stress test was abnormal so had to have a heart catheterization done before they could give me a cardiac clearance. You will see a lot depends on your insurance and practices requirements.
