My nutritionist suggested not doing puree at all, just soft foods. She said doing puree won't train you to chew sufficiently for when you progress to the next stage. This stage has been very easy as far as meals but I went through a period of not being able to tolerate water or protein. No matter how small the sip, water would feel like it wasn't going down and I had a very uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. Even my flavor add ins didn't smooth the water texture and my taste buds did something crazy and I couldn't stand the taste of ANY protein drinks. I made so many different recipes, took one taste and poured it out. I have found an unflavored that I can finally tolerate with orange juice and tons of ice. I'm concerned that I've yet to reach my water or protein goals and i'm now 5 weeks out. I went through a full week of extreme fatigue that I couldn't shake but I looked at my discharge paper work that stated fatigue in weeks 2-4 was normal. Today I finally got in 36ozs of water but only about 20oz protein. I feel like there's not enough time in a day or room in my pouch to consume enough.

16 days out since surgery and being on purée has been so much better. I was to the point that I’d rather not eat than have more liquid meals... being able to have a scrambled egg with cheese, or deli turkey wrapped with hummus in the middle, or refuted beans has been a game changer. I made the ricotta bake (8oz ricotta, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan, 1 egg, Italian seasoning mixed together with 1/2 cup marinara and 1/2 cup mozzarella on top baked at 400 for 20 minutes) Ended up making a second time but with garlic powder and onion powder too and less Italian seasoning. Tastes like the inside of lasagna without meat or pasta and makes 4 1/2 cup servings!

    Hey buds!

I just wanted to share an idea I had for making a sf protein version of Mcdonalds Pineapple Mango Smoothie :)

I found flavor drops at Walmart, Great Day brand, in Pineapple Mango flavor, so I put 3/4 c water, some ice, a scoop of unflavored protein powder (I use the Inspire brand from the Bariatric Eating site) and the pineapple mango drops and a few drops of the orange tang drops, tastes great and the flavor in the drops disguise any protein flavor.

I was so ready for something different at 9 days out. I don’t get to move to purées until Monday.

Finally and answer. I figured such a specific relentless pain could not be gas alone. I feel better knowing that. I understand that is the area where a lot of "rerouting" was done so it make sense to have the pain there. I was beginning to wonder.....

I am entering day 15. My left side pain is lessening, i'm sleeping better, off pain meds, feeling a little more energy and looking forward to my puree stage Friday. All in all I think things are going pretty good for me and i'm excited for the future. The rough patches will pass. I've had multiple surgeries so I think I was familiar with the recovery process.

Goody222, i'm on day 15 and i'm ready to get back to living. I'm needing less and less recuperating but i'm trying to not overdo anything. I go for my 1st post OP appt tomorrow and an looking forward to more food variety. I've downloaded some great bariatric cookbooks on Kendal and can't wait to try some of the puree meals. Good luck on your surgery, try patients during recovery, and remember; this too shall pass. Before you know it you will be living your best life.

I am getting on the road to go to the hospital! Going by myself and will be there all by myself for the majority of the time until my husband comes later in the week. I have been having such an awesome week. We put an offer on a home and it was excepted yesterday. Then I got an amazing job opportunity yesterday. So instead of feeling nervous I simply feel really confident about the procedure today. I’m on a winning streak! Hoping all goes well today.

I'm 56 and had bypass 4.5 months ago at age 55. I've lost 61 lbs as of today and feel great. I'm now off all my medications (blood pressure, cholesterol and arrhythmia meds) and a able to do so much more than I ever could. I had a band for 9 years and did well with it for about the first 6 years or so, but had a very bad run and turned to food and gained back all I lost and more.
My sister had her bypass at age 68 (5 years ago) and she's feeling fantastic.

On days you do cook, make a double or triple batch and freeze in individual portions. For example, I made ricotta bake last night. I doubled the recipe and baked it in an pan that cooks each one individually. So I have 8 individual ricotta bakes - 6 of them frozen for later. And I made some black bean soup and froze a bunch in 1/2 c. batches. Crustless quiche works well, as does lentil soup. It helps that I have a vacuum sealer, so the frozen food lasts longer. I don't always have time to cook, but I almost always have something in the freezer that I can grab and take with me.

You're gonna need to get a referral to a therapist who specializes in bariatric food issues.
If it were me, I'd dial back the amount of exercise. Walk daily, do some HIIT stuff. Drop ALL bad carbs to the curb for now. Only eat dense, dry protein to whatever quantity your doctor specifies. Get all your water in (no sweet waters). Drink decaff coffee and decaff green tea and matcha. Keep fully hydrated. Drink as much water as you can about 15minutes prior to eating. Then eat slowly as you can for 20 minutes. Then don't drink for 1-2 hours afterward.
The only thing I would eat right now until my hunger comes into control is:
    1. Lean dense (very) protein=dry grilled chicken breasts, pork chops (lean), turkey burgers, lean ground beef burgers. Lean steak, salmon, hard boiled eggs, hard scrambled eggs, hard fried eggs (no runny yolks, they make the egg a slider protein at that point). (Only grill it or pan sear it or air fry it. NO MEAT LUBES, SAUCES, GRAVIES, or CASSEROLES!!!!)
    2. 1 oz of al dente veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, wilted greens and garlic, wilted cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli rabe
    3. 1/2oz avocado or up to 1 tsp of healthy oil per meal: olive, avocado, grassfed butter, lard, tallow.
Use spices but no artificial sweeteners. Nothing sweet! No fruit, no mashed anything, no potatoes, rice, grains, beans, nothing til your hunger is assuaged.
Meet your protein needs if you can from solid lean dense protein: 60-80g/day.
That's what I do. Of course I can't tell you to do it. I'm not an RD or a doc!!! It takes about 4 solid days of behaving and doing this for your hunger to come into control...then I'd see what I needed to do after that. I would probably just continue on like that...cuz um, lol, that's what I already do!
