Carson Liu, M.D., Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Carson Liu is a board-certified, nationally recognized bariatric and gastrointestinal expert and one of Southern California’s most experienced LAPBAND ® surgeons. He has successfully performed more than 3500 weight loss procedures, including gastric bypass surgery and the state-of-the-art LAP-BAND procedure, a minimally invasive and reversible surgery in which an inflatable, prosthetic ring is applied to narrow the stomach opening and limit food intake for severely overweight patients. Among his many medical distinctions and professional accolades, Dr. Liu was distinguished as the Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery for the UCLA School of Medicine in 2003, where he conducted extensive research and published studies on gastrointestinal hormones, intestinal absorption and pancreatic cancer. Dr. Liu has also performed studies on robotic minimally invasive surgery for diabetes and obesity, in addition to studying the scientific differences and similarities between laparoscopic and open gastric bypass. Dr. Liu’s research and expertise has been extensively published in industry publications such as the Journal of Surgical Research, American Surgeon, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Obesity Surgery. Most recently, Dr. Liu was the medical director of Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery at Century City Hospital in Los Angeles, which he joined in 2003, and also served as staff surgeon and director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital, where he practiced since 1998. Dr. Liu has had a long experience with the LAP-BAND as he placed the first bands at UCLA in 2002. He has performed more LAP-BANDS than any other surgeon in Los Angeles. He currently is Medical Director at OBand Centers where he has pioneered outpatient LAP-BAND surgeries.
