Ok, so I am 6 lbs away from losing 100 lbs and 7 lbs from my goal weight (which is shifting to Goal Body Fat BTW)

So here is the conundrum…

Should I be proud of losing 100 lbs, or should I be ashamed of having been 100 lbs overweight?

I guess everyone has their reasons for putting on weight, it can be so complicated and it's tied up with habits and addiction. Although society makes people feel ashamed for overindulgence and for seeming to lack control, I don't think it does anyone any good to go around feeling ashamed, particularly when you have recognised you needed to make a change in your lifestyle and you've come so far in achieving that. I think you should definitely feel proud! I hope when I'm at my goal weight, I won't look back at who I was with any bad feelings, it's like holding onto the past and punishing yourself over who you used to be.

Congratulations on your amazing weight loss!

Be PROUD!!! No looking back. It doesn't matter at all how/why you gained the wt., just that you decided to do something about it! Those 100lbs are in the past. Congratulations!

There is no way of going back and changing the past, so be PROUD that you were able to get the weight off!!!!

Are you not giving yourself enough credit for losing it, and that's weighing the "fat head" syndrome vs the actual accomplishment? As in, do you think the band did all the work and you're still the same fat guy inside?

If so, then we can give you the same song and dance we give the newbs:

...the band is a TOOL

...You still have to do the work

...the band can't do it for you

Sound familiar?

YOU did that! YOU lost all that weight...so be PROUD of that! Losing is so friggen HARD!

Getting fat is easy. I gained 3 pounds last weekend for DH's birthday getaway in San Antonio. And during the month I was unfilled last year I gained 10!!!

It's like fat just sits around the protective guard shield, testing and waiting...

Be proud! Be dancing in the street! You did an awesome job at defeating what many people never overcome.

BE PROUD!

You have come soooo far and we all know it is MUCH easier to put the weight on than take it off! Putting it on is a no brainer---taking it off takes hard work and hard effort!

I am proud that I have lost 165, I tell everyone. And I love when they say "NO" and I get to show them a picture! It was a lot of work and I am going to be proud!

It’s only fair that I point out that I am indeed totally proud:thumbup::biggrin::thumbup:

Not of what others think mind you, but of what I have done for me. I’m not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse, but I don’t have much in the area of humility (I missed that gene). I could really care less what other people think and I have never been one to get embarrassed easily, so I was never ashamed in that sense of the word. The question was really meant more as a way to ponder where I have been and where I have come.

The answer to my poll for me is “both”. I am extremely proud because it was damned hard work. To those of you that said the band doesn’t do all the work for you, you are so very right. I am disappointed in my old self though for getting so heavy. The beauty in all of this is that I now know what it is like to be healthy and to not be the “big guy” in the room and I have the tools (the band is only one of those tools) to stay this way.

Keep up the great work you all. I’m not done and neither are you:wink2:

I think you should be very proud. I like to focus on whether or not my current thoughts/behaviors are moving me closer to or father from my goals. Feeling proud- would leave me closer- feeling shame- would move me further away.

Shame isn't much of a motivator and not much good comes from it. I know I never want to shame anyone- it does not support positive behavior change.

But you are right- it is a SHAME that we missed out on lots of parts of life when we were our heaviest. This is the part I struggle with- the moments/experiences that I didn't experience to the fullest because of my weight. I feel like I wasted a lot of time.

But we gotta just keep moving forward.

Be Proud...because it's a heck of a lot harder to lose it than gain it

Be Proud...because you've changed your life, your mindset and your habits for the better

Be Proud...because now you can be a positive example for others

Be Proud...because you made the decision and followed through on it (and that's the hard part)

Be Proud...because you now have a new sense of accomplishment, and hopefully, self-confidence to go with it.

Be Proud...because you've increased your life expectancy

Be Proud...because you didn't give in to the demon Sloth or its counterpart Greed. You fought the good fight and didn't let them win!

Be Proud...because after everything you have been through - you are still STANDING - you are still standing!

I'm gonna be extra-special-proud when I hit my goal - I'm gonna shout it from the rooftops, tell everyone who asks, and to Hades with anyone who tries to tell me I took the easy way out...

I am proud of what i've done and I dont hide it from those that knew anyway. But otherwise, I tend to fall on the ashamed side. I was fat becuase I was a lazy slob, there's no nice way to put it. I stuffed my face and sat around moaning about how fat I was.

I know, I know, there's "reasons" why I behaved like that. Dont know what they were, dont care, dont go in much for therapy. But overall, I was just darn lazy.

So although I had no problem sharing that I'd had surgery with everyone who knew me, I certainly dont go round advertising the fact that once I was fat because I ate crap food, I overindulged my every whim and I was too sluggish to move my ass. Especially in a professional environment, that's not the person I am now.

Like I said in the other post when you initially asked, be proud! You can't change what was, so don't revisit that; but you DID change the outcome, and for that you are to be highly commended and should be PROUD!

I accidently voted wrong... geez.

I'm really both though! I'm about to be real ashamed If I don't get back on my role!

EbonyRose,

You should be a motivational speaker.

Thanks

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
