In dire need of reassurance

Recommended Posts

Hi-

I was banded three days ago and keep going through bouts of fear and nausea. Today I drank my morning Protein and so far so good. Last night the nausea was so bad that I called the surgeon on call at 11:30 p.m. He reassured me that he thought I was doing okay. He suggested going back to just Water sips until the nausea subsided. I do feel better this morning but just want to feel all the way better NOW! I can't wait to be able to sleep in my own bed....and feel comfortable.

Any words of advise or encouragement will be much appreciated. Right now all I am doing is feeling very sorry for myself and miserable.

Thanks ahead of time!

Sally

Hi Sally. Welcome to Bandland :)

Just keep telling yourself "This, too, will pass." You are just 3 days past major surgery. I slept in my recliner for a week, mostly because I was afraid of rolling over in my sleep if I slept in my bed. Be patient with yourself and know that you WILL feel better soon. The nausea is probably left over from the anesthesia. It takes a while to completely get that out of your system. The fear is normal. Just keep coming here to read and post. You'll find encouragement, commiseration, suggestions and support.

Hang in there honey! It's worth it.

I was banded 6/08 and sounds like you are having some of the same experiences I had, sorry you are having a hard recovery

Did they give you anything for the nausea? If not, insist that they call something into to your pharmacy.

Try drinking room temp liquids and/or warm (NOT HOT) liquids. It will help to sooth the muscles of your esophagus and your tummy. Also, try putting a heating pad on your back to help get rid of some of the gas.

If it get worse ... dry heaving, vomiting, ect ... insist that someone see you.

Keep us posted and try to rest

I was just banded yesterday 6/19 at 7:30 am and I am so glad you posted this. I was beginning to get worried about the gas pains...will they ever go away when you are not releasing gas on either end? *sorry for the too much info* I am scared to drink anything other then my liquid pain med lortab and small sips of Water, for fear of getting sick. I tried a sugar free popsicle yesterday evening and it immediatley made me sick to my stomach. I did sleep in my bed last night using 4 pillows to keep me upright *which really helped* also the heating pad does help with the shoulder pain from the hernia repair I had as well. If only I could get rid of the gas pain I think I would feel so much better.

Oh I remember those days. I took the gas x strips. They really helped me. Day 2and 3 were the worse. Day 2, I mostly sat in my recliner and slept thanks to the liquid tylenol #2. It helped alot. Also remember to get up and walk every hour or 2. Just around your house. It helps. The heating pad also helps. Try to eat something lite. I think sometimes the nausea can be caused by an empty stomach. Hope you are better soon.

I wanted to add that you should take something for the gas. Prior to surgery, the surgeons nurse told me to get liquid mylanta. OMG, that made it soooo much worse. I think that's because of the thick consistency.

Hubs ran to CVS and got me some Gas X chewables. With in minutes, I started with small burps ... oh the relief! It took a day for a good fart  to work up ... and that was a huge relief :(

They also have the Gas X strips that disolve in the mouth. CVS only had mint flavored. I had a hiatal hernia (which they repaired during surgery) and I had learned to stear clear of mint. That's why hubs got me the chewables, which basically began to disolve the minute that hit my mouth.

Last time I was at Walmart I looked and they had the strips in cherry ...

Do small walks, get something for the gas and do your best to keep as hydrated as possible

I had some nausa the first few days too. It was not that bad, I ended up taking out some Coke and let it go flat. A few sips seemed to help calm things down. With a few day it was fine.

Oh, Esposita, this will pass, and you'll be feeling like a million dollars in no time. You are going to love it once you get past the surgery ick. It should not last more than a couple of days more. I was worried, too, and I can't tell you how great I feel now. For me, I had trouble "going" after I had surgery, and it was making me feel queezy. I had to get some exercise and take some lax medicine, and ....after that, I felt so much better. I think the anesthesia is hard on one's body. Hang in there. It gets better...and fast.

I had surgery on Wednesday June 17th. I was sick on the 2nd day of surgery and could not drink anything but Water. Today I am feeling a lot better and getting cabin fever. Think I might try driving tomorrow. You will fill fine in the next coming days. I speak with my doctors 7:30, and 8:30 lap band patients (I was 9:30) and one had to return to the hospital with pains in her legs, but she is doing fine today. I bet you will see some releif tomorrow.

Thank you for the tip on the Gas X strips they really did help a lot. Still have gas today but I am finally able to drink my Protein drinks.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
