Want to start running...need encouragement

Not allowed to run! That has to be killing you!

This is kind of funny. My wife is in this corporate event, I signed up for a different event on the same day. Turns out the two groups got together and combined it into one big event, so we will be going there and running together after all. This works out great for me because I hate carrying anything on me while running. She doesn't mind carrying a key and my "Tiger Balm" with her.

Yeah! :thumbup:That is great that you will be able to participate in the same event. You and your wife are like my DH and I. I carry the car key, etc and he can't stand to have anything on him when he runs!

Well it was huge success today at least for us. I bettered my 10k time by more than 5 minutes. My wife bettered her best time in the 5k.

WTG to you and your wife! It is great to have a PR!

I did a 5.2 mile run today and it actually went pretty well. I was a bit concerned because I got bucked off my horse and hit hard on Friday. My hip and shoulder felt fine, however, the huge bruise on my thigh was giving me fits during the first mile, but I sucked it up and did the run. I felt great at the turn around and think I will do well on the 10K race - we ran the course again this morning.

Hope everyone has a great run today!!!

Thanks for the encouragement. In a coincidence, I have a good friend who started running with me. He lives 30 miles away, so we were just running together once a week. He ran is first 5k a week ago, but then left and took his quad runner into a forest, flipped it and it came down on him bruising his hip, shoulder and leg all on the left side. So I'm back to running alone again.

Grats BillOh to you and your wife! Awesome that you both did a personal best.

I'm on week 1 of C25k for the second week . I think perhaps I started a bit too soon. I was practically a couch potato [ok, a WoW potato] for the last 4 years, and have only been working out since July 27th. I can do the walk/jog within my heartrate range but am having trouble with the balls of my feet bothering me. I know the shoes fit right, just thinking perhaps the body hasn't caught up with the circulatory system. I'm going to stick with the program this week and see what's what.

The days I don't run I walk 1/2-1 hour on the treadmill and lift weights for about 20 min. Not sure if I'm just being too enthusiastic here or what.

Hi Everyone!

Grats BillOh to you and your wife! Awesome that you both did a personal best.

I'm on week 1 of C25k for the second week :w00t:. I think perhaps I started a bit too soon. Gitrdone, you are doing the right thing! Taking it easier is definately the way to stay injury-free. I've done two weeks on a c25k routine - especially in the beginning when I wasn't sure I could even jog a block! This morning, I ran half the course (just over a half-mile) without stopping! I have to stop mid-way to let DDog do his duty, but I ran the second half without stopping also...and that's because I took the progress slowly.

I used to get shin splints something terrible - happened whenever I tried to extend my distance or run faster. A combination of having lost 60 pounds and taking it slower has kept me shin-splint free this go around. That, plus the exercise BillOh recommended...

Stick with it - you may find that the next 4 weeks go faster than the first 4...:)

Good early morning Everyone!

Just got in from my run - yes, run! I ran my entire course this morning...a little over 1 mile...without stopping! :blushing::w00t::w00t:

Lately DDog has been holding me back - for whatever reason, he doesn't like to run (could just be age - he's nearly 8) so this morning I left him at home. I did a short warmup and just went for it.

By the halfway mark, I was thinking "Maybe I can do this..." and by the next block or so, I was thinking "I can do this...". I felt so GOOD after running the entire distance - I'm flying high right now and had to share.

Next run is Saturday - and I'll be extending my distance a bit. That's the plan for the next 4 weeks - to extend my run about a third of a mile each week until I'm running about 2.5 miles out and back. I think that will put me in good shape for the 5k I want to run in late September.

Keep wogging / jogging / running, everyone!

Hi Everyone!

Agreed. Continuing to lose weight makes the running easier and then the running makes the weight loss easier. For us now, its actually fun. We have a week off with no real plans, so we looked online and found a good cause 5K in Cleveland (130 miles away) We jumped in the car, got a cheap hotel, and were on the starting line at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at 9am this morning. New personal bests for both of us and really fun day.

Good afternoon Everyone!

Extended my run distance this morning - added another couple of blocks so now I'm running just about a mile and a quarter non-stop. Feeling great and loving this!

What is he c25K program and where do you ge it?

Hi Sparkles62 - it's the Couch to 5K, and if you do either a search on this website, or a google search for that phrase, you'll find links to it. There's also several iPhone applications to help you work through it. It takes you from not running at all through a slow progression of walking and running until you can run a 5k race. The progression runs about 12 weeks, but some (like me) stay longer than one week in each phase of the program. You gradually walk less and run more as you move forward. I was a walker before doing the program, and now I'm combining walking and running throughout the week. I run 3 days a week and walk 3 - 4 other days.

Take a look at the program online, print out or download what you need, and make sure you get a GOOD pair of running shoes, and go for it!

Hi MzReeda!

It's very different stress on your body to run versus walking. I found, because I'm running the same course that I would walk, that the level of effort for me is probably about 1.5 to 2 times in the beginning. As I warm up and get stronger, it gets easier.

Before I started the c25k, I had lost about 50 - 55 pounds - I would never have considered running at my pre-banded weight. That doesn't mean you can't, it just means that you have to be careful. There's a post further back in this thread from Jachut (very knowledgable poster and a runner) who said that our lungs can take extended distances before some of the physical mechanisms in our bodies (joints, etc) can handle the distance.

If 15 - 20 sec is all you can handle right now, then do that. Keep that up for a week or two and you'll find yourself feeling stronger and better. Then try for jogging 1 minute - then walk. Take a look at the c25k and see what their initial time for running is - I think it's one minute. Once you can do that semi-comfortably, then try to keep progressing through the program - realizing that you might need to stay with a particular week's program more than one week to prepare you to move on.

Think of your progression from walker to runner as a marathon - you just want to be in it for the long haul.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
