NJ 2009 Chat - Jan, Feb and March

Well, I had a long overdue short girls' weekend escape this weekend and ate waaay too much! It was in Lancaster, PA (Amish PA Dutch country) and we saw a concert (an imitation ABBA group from Sweden...excellent job!), shopped and ate, ate, ate! Smorgasboard dinner on Friday night (I did fine with dinner, but overindulged on dessert!) and of course, had to bring home cinnamon rolls, shoo-fly pie and whoopie pies (they are like hostess devil dogs) for the family. Ugh!! It's hard to visit that area and not eat!

I'll see some of you on the exercise link!

Donna

Hahaha, yes, that some would probably not include me, I'm so lazy.

Trish, I'm on the fence with the fill, I'm scheduled for a fill Thursday, do I really think it's going to happen...not! I'll probably cancel it tomorrow. Not that I don't need it, I like to think this is my sweet spot and I don't want to mess it up .

Sherry, I'm not getting them either, I figured everyone was in a posting slump.

Trish, that's awesome you had a little getaway, you deserve it.

Diane, whats up you didn't call me back?

Kat, who the hell does that jerk think he is? Rick was more diplomatic than me or my hubby would have been, I can assure you the redneck in us would have been in full force.

I noticed my notification type had been changed to "No email notification", I didn't change it. I wonder if we have to select it with each new thread, ya think, lol.

Patty, glad to see you back, look forward to a year's update.

Michaele, I'm sure it was a tough time with house issues and hubby being gone, you're entitled to a little down time.

Hugs gal pals.

Hey folks!

I didn't get my email notifications and thought, awwww man! I must have been missing out on all the news!!!! BAH!

Congratulations Kat, on your new grandson!!! He sounds just gorgeous!

Pat! You're bAAAAAAAAaaaaaack!LOL:) Sorry I missed you returning my call, would loved to have gotten caught up on what's been goin' on with you. We had company over and were doing kind of a pot luck at our house....you know, eat too much drink too much, never stop laughing!

Sherry, I hope your head is feeling better. I've been having DAYS worth of headaches! the weather, ugh :tongue2: that's what gives me the biggest headaches, it's that barometric pressure changes thing.

Michaele, sorry to hear about the funk you've been in. I know it's so crummy when you get in one of those blue funks. Just want to do next to nothing! You've had a lot to deal with lately, and with your place getting back together, things will start getting better daily! good hearing from you

Trish, sounds like you and the gals had a blast!!!! Good for you!

Alright Theresa :coffee: Got all your stuff together for the upcoming big day Tuesday? I remember checking off my list: fill pain med rx, heating pad, gas-x strips (just in case), sugar free fruit pops, etc. If you have a Sonic restaurant around, pick up a bag of party ice. Its great when you have to satisfy that urge to chew something crunchy. I don't like crunching on ice most times, because it's too hard, but party ice is easy to chew.

Betty? Woo Hoo! How're you doin'?

Hey Donna, have you started your other grad class yet?

Hey there Darcy! Welcome back.

Diane, you returned my call, I'm headed for my phone, I didn't notice any missed calls.

Betty, where are you? Are you ok?

I'm in a irritated mood, I've been trying to download my new Norton Antivirus and it's told me three times my subscription has expired, then I go back to my email, get my info, confirmation, etc, then it stops in the same place, ERRRR! Shit, I just got a pop up that says I'm protected now, but have 0 days left on my subscription, now I'm really pissed.

Hi Y'all!

I am here, reading and not posting. I have been really busy and my dang hand has been bothering me lately so not doing anymore typing than I have to as I need it for work.

I will try to catch up with you tomorrow or next day.

I am tired tonight!

Gosh, is nobody posting????

Not much new here, things are getting bad with jobs and all, so far I have been safe. I actually got a raise on my review! Although DH got his hours cut! So, my raise pretty much went down the drain. Although things could be worse I certainly would be worse off without my raise.

It's cold here, I will be so glad when summer gets back here. I freeze to death. My skin is so chapped it burns!

I love my hair short, and still get compliments on it all the time. It is so shiny since all the dead stuff is cut off now.

Well, dh is starving to death, so I guess I best go start supper.

Later!

Well......I've been kind of wallowing and stressing but, I've been eating right. My husband was laid off of his job last Friday  NO clue how the budget will balance but, one day at a time right?

I've exercised a few times still too...probably more to get the stress off than for losing weight. Today got home from work, I've been so stinking busy that I've barely had something to eat for supper. I grabbed a cold piece of chicken that was about 2 oz and that's that. Too last to eat now. It's freaking freezin up here too! Everything is icey and cold, cold.

I miss you gals...but I think it's going to take me a bit to get my mind back in the right place. Man I hope this all works out!

Sherry, I feel ya....they warned Rick that layoffs were imminent and his neck was on the block, middle management goes first. They have cut hours back drastically. The totally stupid thing is, that right now, here where we are at the company deals mostly with natural gas, not oil-------and they are SUPER busy! Had the best quarter EVER in the company the last quarter of 08. So they have an entire crew in from CA working here, but because they are slow there, and in other areas, the cuts go company wide, including here.....morons I swear.

Rick has been making me crazy, all he talks about is cutting back, doing away with this or that. NM unemployment office is so screwed up, they actually have Feds in trying to get it fixed, lots of people who have filed from last November still have not begun receiving benefits....and people calling (with proof) over 600 times and getting a message saying all lines are busy yadda yadda yadda......so on top of being worried about the layoff, not knowing if benefits would be forthcoming in a timely manner, is making his nutso, and he is driving me crazy! It is scary to me too---------but harping on it 24/7 is not making it any better!

Weather is cold.....

DD is being an idiot and allowing SOL to continue to control the situation. Only allowing visitors during the weekend when he is off and home. Sorry but F#*K that! DH has stopped by after work, and he hates it! SOL I mean, but he is not stupid enough to say anything directly---but I refuse to even mess with them. They want me in the baby's life they will come here I guess. I have other grandkids I do not have to make appointments to see.

I know that sounds harsh------but it isn't going to change, the more I am with him, and fall in love with him the harder the being pushed away will be.....so I am cutting my losses so to speak. Letting DH handle it his way.

All combined have made me one grouchy old woman!!! So y'all haven't missed much!!!

DD is here to get Kinsey, so will catch back up later!

XOXO

Kat

Sounds as if we all have had a few things that have gotten us off track...at least as it pertains to posting!

I've just been a little more stressed than usual...this week work was extra, extra busy; my Mom had to have a Pacemaker put in (dr told her she needed it on Tues and it was put in on Thurs. Apparently a 24 hr holter monitor revealed that for several hundred times her heart rate averaged 20-30 beats per minute. THAT's bad!); I refinanced my mortgage on Tuesday (that was good news, rate dropped 2 points to 4.875!) and then the nice long weekend I was looking forward to started out with one son with 102+ fever (he's just starting to feel better, that means his twin or I will get it next!) Oh well...I shouldn't whine!

My fill is coming up on Wednesday afternoon. I am thinking that the scale will be up a few pounds when I check in. :huh2:

This week will be another busy one! Then next week I will start teaching again 2 nights a week. (I'm trying to get some extra funds together to help me plan a vacation for my 50th this summer. I'm trying to put a positive spin on it!)

Oh well, hope everyone has a good week! Please post when you are able!

Trish

Hello Y'all!

Sorry I have been mia for a while. I was sick all weekend and just couldn't do much of anything. I went to work but still not doing great.

I can't even begin to catch up with everyone, but I have read most of it.

It sounds like it is a bad month for most everyone, it's time for things to change!

I am ready for warm weather, everyone is I think. I am sick of cold weather! Give me the heat!

Gald to see some of the oldies post again, and welcome to the newbies!

Time for me to fix supper!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
