I have been overweight pretty much my whole life and also had big babies - 10.6, 8.9 and 9.11 lbs. My kids do eat junk in moderation and none of them have ever had a weight problem and they are 15, 13, and 10. Since I was banded and can't have soda we rarely have soda in the house and I have switched over to whole grain tortillas, Pasta, bread etc and give them salad a few nights a week. They make pretty good choices in food at school. I have never said they can't have candy Cookies soda etc because my thought is if it is a forbidden food, they will want it more and will get it somewhere if not at home. One of my friends did that with her son and when he had a chance to eat those types of foods he ate them like they it was going to be his last time ever - also traded his healthy lunches for junk at school. Just my take on the subject - parents raise their children differently and different is not necessarily wrong.

It is really quiet at work today - although it is not a furlough Friday a lot of people took the day off. Wish I was home packing for my trip - but as I will be out all next week I needed to get some things done.

Yay Ash - we knew you could do it.

Happy Friday everyone. Feeling a lot better today. I can feel my band and now I understand why Candra calls hers Rambo. The band is a very powerful tool. I am still having trouble taking deep breaths. It catches me by surprise sometimes.

Ali, May will be here before you know it and by that time you will be really ready. One thing I have learned from my journey is that you really can't be too prepared for this. It is not an easy solution and definitely not for wimps. You have to be strong and determined to get through the rough Patches. Thanks for your offer to drive me tomorrow, but I think I will be okay to drive myself. I want to have my car in case I poop out and need to leave early. I get so tired so quickly these days.

Lee, those shrimp you ate have made my mouth Water. Good information about Baja Fresh. I probably wouldn't have thought I could eat at Mexican restaurants again. Good to know there are some choices out there.

I have chatting with other people online and it is amazing how different all the eating directions are. Some are on a liquid pre op diet for 2 weeks before and then clears 2 weeks after. I guess we are lucky that Kaiser is more lenient with us. Creamy Soups are so very yummy right now.

Enjoy the sunshine everyone. Weather is supposed to change next week. Wah...

Hi everyone - just saying a quick hi and happy TGIF!

So here is my story - I guess I am in bandster hell - no restriction, eating way too much and feeling bad about it. Yoyoing between gaining and losing the same 2 lbs but no more (which is good and bad.) Some eating is hunger and some is stress / emotional. Only exercising on the weekend. Its not good and no fun - need to try to get my head back on straight. April 29th fill appt seems a really long way off right now and so I wanted to be down to at least 190 by then. Need some help.

Laurel - so glad you are doing well. I agree - this is such a process and it is hard work.

Ash - congrats you are almost there- so great!

Ali - I also wanted to schedule my surgery a few months out - I met my weight goal in Nov but didn't want surgery over the holidays and with my oldest coming home for a visit. I had surgery at the end of Jan so I was way beyond my surgery goal weight - so it was not at all stressful about worrying that I would be turned away on surgery day for not being at goal. I think you are doing the right thing - I wanted to do it at a time that I could really really focus on myself and my journey in this new way of life.

Heather - I agree about the video and kids. On the other thread that Riley started about what else have you lost or gained on this journey, one of the things I wrote is gaining so much more understanding and compassion for people who battle weight. Meeting so many people and what their struggles have been either physically or emotionally has been a real eye openner and has increased my empathy and respect for all who struggle with this issue and are trying to do something about it. There is a high schooler in the So. Co. WLS group Riley and I go to that talked about all the things she is now getting to do that she never could do before - walk across a riding rink, ride a horse, have a boyfriend, go to prom - it was so touching it made me cry.

I've been multi-tasking - working and watching part of Oprah. Had on Jamie Oliver and Ryan Seacrest - doing a movie about overeating in America and against fast/junk food - pushing eating real/whole foods. Showed that there is a huge rise in the mortuary business for oversized caskets - and how much dignity is lost since they can't fit in hearsts, etc. Also about how it effects kids when parents don't provide healthy food - showed how to make things like chicken nuggets in a much healthier way.

Wow - a big and sad eye opener. Reinforces we are all doing this for living a longer, healthier life.

Ash, congrats on making your way to goal!

Mo and Pat, so sorry to hear that you're both lacking restriction.

Ali, how are you feeling tonight?

Tamra, are you ready for the big move tomorrow?

I haven't done much today besides get on the treadmill, catch up with my TiVo and read. And I guess answer my work cellphone about 25 times so that counts as work.

I think I'm coming to the place of mourning food. Most everything is upsetting my baby Sleeve at this point. Even my Vitamins came back up. I think I have to get back to some very easy foods that stay down. I know that refried Beans are not on the list, but I did have 1/3 cup for dinner with a touch of melted cheese because I needed it to soothe and stay down.

It's supposed to be gorgeous tomorrow, so I'm planning an afternoon at the pool.

YAY for Friday night!

Donna, I'm not going to make it to PW today. I was in SAC earlier in the week and have to return on Monday. Just too much driving for me.

Tamra, Atkins is pretty easy as it takes away the hunger. I've been doing it since surgery and since we can't eat big amounts, the Protein is very filling. I have a feel the real challenge for you will be staying away from the coffee. You can do it! Good luck with your move this weekend.

It's a beautiful day here. I'm going swimming for the afternoon. I didn't stretch yesterday and I'm feeling stiff in my legs, so the swimming should help. There's a big Oakland Marathon being run right past my house today. UGH on the traffic, YAY on the runners!

Waiting for surgery date…still undecided sleeve vs. RNY
      · 1 reply
      1. Jodi74

I had the sleeve 9/13/21 and just had a the sleeve to bypass revision on 5/3/23. My HW:321 (I'm 5' 8" tall)and I went down to 254 while doing my 7 nutrition appts required by my insurance company. So just changing the way I ate, I was able to get those pounds off w/o surgery. I have many Co morbidities mixed hyperlipidemia, diabetes, htn, MI due to covid. I had read and done quite a bit of research so I could choose the best surgery for myself and learned previous to my sleeve that someone as heavy as I was and all the Co morbidities I have, it was better in my situation to have the bypass but, my DR. Kept saying I would have the same results with the sleeve. Every time I would see him and say to him that I felt it would be best to just get the bypass, he just shot me down and said the sleeve would produce the same results! Why he kept asking me which surgery I wanted at each visit just to tell me the sleeve was all I needed still a mystery to me????? Let's just say, my Dr. Was wrong you see, the surgeries are both about the same price, but the sleeve is easier for the surgeon to perform so I think my DR. Just wanted the easier since he would get the same pay no matter what. After sleeve surgery I did go from 254 to 226 BUT that's just because you are healing from surgery and can't eat anyway as soon as I recovered! I was starving non-stop. I went right back up and stayed at 248. Still had to take cholesterol meds, blood pressure meds, diabetes meds etc. I'm now almost 4 weeks post op the bypass and feel great. I'm not starving all the time, went from 248 to 220 and doing great! Not only what you just read about my story, you also hear about a lot of people needing revision after the sleeve due to acid reflex like severe acid reflex all the time. So the bypass surgery is the only way to stop This reflux if you acquire this condition after sleeve surgery. The regain possibility is higher with sleeve than bypass so just think about all these factors before you make your decision. I wish I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from having to have 2 surgeries in under 2 years. The bypass surgery was also less painful for me lol! I don't know if the new surgeon was better or what but, I was home the next day. After the sleeve I had to stay an extra night due to the nausea and vomiting all night and for pain control.

Who knew Filet Mignon would make me so sick. Leftovers from Mother's Day.  On the upside..next day I started walking outside a little over a mile without stopping or back pain. That's a bit deal for me considering how inactive I've been for years. Woot woot!

Five-week follow-up for gastric bypass and now on lifetime food plan. No restrictions.  In all that time I was fortunate to get sick only one time, week 1, on Easter. Chicken broth...go figure.
