2 years post band trouble

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 2 years ago and have had issues with vomiting off and on but never anything chronic. On oct 7, I couldn't get anything to stay down...not even liquid. I thought right away that the band had slipped so got into the doc right away. He did barium swallow and all looked well. We thought maybe the ibuprofen I took irritated my stomach and tried to give it a few days (that was a thurs). On monday I called to get into my regular doc, still unable to keep anything down. She started treating me for an ulcer, that same week on thurs, I went to LB doc again for an endoscopy. This showed a lot of irriatation, gastritis and I tested positive for H Pylori, so I was treated for that! 2 weeks later, there was a little relief but still vomiting everyday just not as much.

Then nov 17 and my vomiting seemed to be getting worse again. I went to the regular doc again today and demanded to be referred to a gastric specialist...which he did do. He said the vomiting has nothing to do with H Pylori and blames the lapband. He also says that he has 3 other patients with symptoms like mine and they all have lapband. Obviously he is majorly negative against the band! That don't help me one bit!

Now last thursday nov 20, I went to the LB doc again. This time in a very unagreeable mood and demanded that "I want answers!!" I have been vomiting 3-10 times per day EVERYDAY for almost 2 months and no one can seem to help. I am not a doc but that CAN'T be healthy!

So, long story short...He emptied my band finally (I asked for him to do this 2 back in October!) I ate and actually kept things down yesterday for the first time in almost 2 months! You can't possibly imagine the relief in that! OMG...I can hardly believe it. But I still have problems because I have pain in my stomach...it feels like it swollen in there and hurts to wear jeans (especially sitting). I am guessing it is still the gastritis. but Could that all that vomiting for that long of time have caused problems with the band? My LB doc acted like he was mad b/c he had to empty the band...I have found another LB doc and need to wait for the referral. Good thing too b/c I really don't trust my current doc anymore.

Has anyone else had these kind of issues? If so, what did you have to do to get better?

Note: I already had gall bladder removed before LB placement...so I know that isn't my problem.

Thank you so much for listening, I know this is long but I am SO frustrated!

Dee:sad:

Hello Dee! I am so happy that you posted and to find someone else with gastritis and the lap band. My stomach calmed down a week after I had the Fluid removed from my band. It will be two weeks Friday since they removed it. I wasn't vomiting but having a lot of problems with eating and pain. I am still waiting for a GI appointment. I was referred on that same day and haven't received a call for an appt. So I went to the health food store and these are the things that seemed to help me: Papaya for nausea, DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) to sooth the stomach lining and digestive tract, and Aloe Vera for healing the stomach. I haven't ever bought things like this, but they seemed to help or time did. They told me because I have chronic gastritis that I should look into having a RNY. I have an appt Friday about having this revision. I was trying to find information on people who have gastritis and things have worked with keeping the lap band. The pain was pretty much unbearable for a couple days. Then it let up for a while but was still there and now has been gone. My gall bladder was removed as well. I had lap band surgery on 6/26/08 in Duluth Minnesota. Hope this helps and it would be great to keep in touch! Hope you start feeling better! :cursing:

Have either of you tried the 5 day pouch test? It seems to help many that are having problems to help calm the esophagus and the stomach and gradually gets you back to solids.

Surgical Weight Loss 5 Day Pouch Test

I haven't had any issues but tried the 5 day pouch test just for the "renew" feeling. I found the 5 day diet eas to follow and consider it more of a detox diet.

Following my egd on June 6th, the result was I have gastritis. The doctor thought GERD (GRRR! I don't THINK so) & he prescribed Protonix. I took one dose then read the cautions. I am not supposed to take it since I also take Coumadin which was CLEARLY on my medicine list. I'd had a prior weekend of vomiting violently every hour on the hour. I had all my Fluid removed & now (other than the port problem) feel pretty good. I lived on gatorade that weekend but still continued to throw up. Yeech!

Hope you are well on your road to recovery.

I found this thread ... so glad I'm no the only one. I am 8 months post band. I have hit and passed my target already. Not to happy with the time-frame. The last 25 pounds have been because I can not eat. I have had an extreme amount of pain, heartburn and vomiting ... basically the same as you all. I have not been diagnosed with anything, I still have my galblatter. I had all the Fluid removed about 3 weeks ago. The heartburn disappeared immediately and so did the pain. I ate gently for the next week or so - stage 1 eating. I can not get back to solid food. Nothing near to what I was eating even 4 weeks ago.

I looked at the 5 day pouch diet but I am concerned even about the solid food on that diet. I am at a loss for what to do.

The nurse at the LB just keeps telling me to chew my food. {really} I feel like I have some kind of virus or swelling. I just dont know where to turn or how to find relief.

I guess it's back to broth ... but will I ever get back to normal?? Advise please ...

Ian

Hi I just came across this thread and am pleased. I have a similar problem as you guys however I have nothing in my band and lots of stress. I am thinking after doing research that I have Gastritis. I just went and got liquid antiacids to see if that works. I feel as though my stomach is inflamed due to stress. I have no other options since i have nothing in my band and managing stress is not working. I am currently not able to keep anything down. Anyone here had anything work for them yet with Gastritis and the Lap Band?

When you have gastritis anything you put in your stomach will irritate it. You have to let the stomach rest for a few days and drink only Clear Liquids. Its not fun I have it I dont throw up from it but when it acts up I let my stomach rest and it all goes fine. Are you drinking caffiene if you are then stop. Cinnamon and other spices will irritate it. I cant drink coffee anymore or eat certain spices. You need your band emptied and the stomach time to rest. Gastritis is an inflammation of the inside of the stomach caused by something you are eating. You have to let the stomach rest. Empty your bands and go from there start over but it will subside eventually

I also have trouble with painful eating/keeping food down. I read somewhere that it could be mucus build up from your sinuses or something like that. It recommended taking a decongestant OR antacid. (I guess antacids kinda do the same thing as decongestants--dry you out). I've taken an antacid today and it seemed like it really helped! Keep in mind, I do NOT have acid reflux...everything but that!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
