6 Weigh-Ins - GAINING not losing

Recommended Posts

I keep putting off my monthly weigh ins because I am NOT losing - if anything I'm gaining. Dr. wants me to exercise but I have such severe arthritis, I can barely get through my days and I'm only 48.

The other thing is that if I could lose a bunch of weight on my own, why would I need surgery?

Thanks for letting me vent!

I don't know about you but I'm 53 (post menopause) and I can lose without exercising. I have lost weight fine in the past; I just can't keep it off. If you are supposed to lose on your 6-month plan, or at least maintain, then you can do that if you want to. I didn't have to do that for the band but you may bet I've done diets in the past (including WW's last year from Feb to July where I lost 25 pounds, no exercise)

I understand your frustration but I think you're just not looking at the big picture. If you want the band, and you have to diet for 6 months to get it, then do that. OR pay for it and get it. Just realize that even with the band you need to diet and eventually exercise, or the band won't work. I got banded 8/29, have no restriction yet, and am having to watch my intake or I'd gain everything back. If you really truly can't do that (lose on a diet....and some truly can't I know) then maybe the band isn't for you. Maybe bypass or a duodenal switch would be better. Only you can decide for sure; only you know how hard you've been trying to lose preop. But your age and the arthritis aren't reasons to stop you from losing.

If you are doing the 6 month diet for insurance, they just want you to do it, they don't really care if you lose or gain. OTOH, if it's a requirement of your surgeon, you might want to find one that doesn't have such a requirement.

I will vote with dperson. I do Water aerobics and it is so good for arthritis. It will actually make your pains go away. I have done it for 8 years and when I miss a week I hurt again. Great exercise!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
