Came out to family shy of my 5th year

Recommended Posts

Okay, it may seem bizarre to some that I never told my mom that I had lap band surgery 5 years ago this month but, I have kept it a secret from most people and especially family. You see I was adopted as a baby and my adopted family was small boned and never struggled with weight. I constantly got the........."all you have to do is exercise and watch what you eat" routine.

Anyway, I went to visit my Mom this past weekend and she wanted to go get pancakes from the IHOP. Based on my many years of lapband experience I knew there was no way I was going to be able to eat a fluffy pancake. The only thing else really on the menu was an omlette and eggs and my lap band don't get along very well either. I kind of went into panic mode. I had to admit my surgery. But, the weird thing is she was okay about the whole thing and didn't even seem upset that I never told her. Granted she is the queen of keeping surgery secrets lol.

It is such a relief not having to keep the band a secret anymore with her.

Just thought I would share my story.....it's been a while since I posted. I haven't really lost any weight with my band in quite sometime but, it does keep me from out of control eating.

Denise,

You started at the same starting weight as me. How far down did you lose to? Your current weight says that you are moving closer to your starting weight? Do you feel like you have restriction?

I hope you get back on track. I feel that since I've had this surgery I owe it to myself and my family to make it a success. I can definitely see how I could still eat out of control even with it by what I choose to eat but I can't do that to myself. I have come to the conclusion that I am worth it and I will continue to succeed. Some days I am not perfect but I am trying my best.

That is all any of us can do really. Maybe now that your band is not a secret you will get the encouragement that you need and that will help.

Good luck!

i told my parents when i was thinking about getting the surgury, and they said..yeah ok whatever...didn't believe me. Now...(sorry to thread jack you!) but do i tell them the date? or do i just go through it and tell them later? I know that they would be supportive in the end, just the part of getting to the end that is the pain in the butt part!

Since you have already told your family you were thinking about the surgery........yes I would tell them beforehand. Their reaction seems like they think you don't follow through on your promises. I say prove them wrong if you indeed want the surgery.

As far as restriction.......I have as much as I want. I burned out of restriction a long time ago. Don't want to be a lapband downer but, after 5 years I have a love/hate relationship with it.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
