Recommended Posts

hi peeps. time for a quick update yet again. i got my period today! woo hoo! while normally when someone is hoping to get preg that is considered bad news, it means my cycle is finally regulating a little bit (July & August mark the first 2 consecutive months I've had a period since October) and it also means i can buy and use ovulation test sticks now! woo hoo! I can't seem to find the Answer brand ovulation kits anywhere...where do you get them?

I would like to join the "hoping to be preggers soon" club. I stopped taking my pills mid-late August. I am due again for my TOM the week of the September 15th so we will see how it goes. My OB/Gyn said that after being on pills so many years it could take me anywhere from 3 - 12 months to conceive . . . so who knows when I will have something to report.

I have to say though that now we are "trying" to conceive, my husband and I have been having the times of our lives. I didn't know it would be that way, but I am loving every minute of it . . . even if it takes a year.

Please send me the baby dust as well :0)

heather, welcome to our hopeful little club! as for me, things are going great! I have been using the ovulation kits and yesterday, the lines finally matched, so I must have been having my pre-ovulation hormone surge. As well i've had what feels kinda like minor menstrual cramps the past 2 days, so something is definitely going on down there! Please keep your fingers crossed for me. I hope all of us have success on this very soon. Hubby and I have been "trying" all weekend!

I'm joining in too! We have been ttc for about 4 years. Had a ton of tests and nothing is physically wrong with me except for weight and irregular cycles. I'm down 47 pounds and feeling great. Dr. wants me to wait at least a year. I will be going to see gyno soon to also start progesterone to get my cycles back. I've had 3 periods in the last year. And just FYI i started last week and it made my band super super tight! Anyway for those of you who haven't had a cycle since banding just be aware of the possible tightness!

Well . . . yesterday was my husbands birthday, TOM hadn't started and it was due so we took a test . . . and nothing.

I guess last month wasn't "the" month.

Oh well, that just means we get another month of baby-making bliss to enjoy, LOL. It's all in the journey, right???

Heather, it may be a good thing, my obgyn didn't say why but she said when I go off of b/c and look to conceive, I need to wait at least 1 complete cycle. She said use condoms for that month..

Again, I don't know why.. but it must be a good thing to not get pregnant that first month

Good luck with the baby making!

update time yet again.

been counting my cycle days, taking ovulation tests, "trying to get preggo", etc. started spotting today and having some cramps, so i'm bummed. doesn't look like we were successful this month. :) Aunt Flo's due in 2 days (based on my crazy, eventful cycles), so oh well. it looks like she's arriving earlier than usual, rather than 3 weeks late. Hubby has been wonderful and supportive all thru this for me...he rocks.

how is everyone else doing out there?

I am having a really odd situation. My period is over one week late, but any pregnancy tests I take say no. I haven't taken another since last Thursday because it is a little depressing, annoying and pricey to keep taking them with no results.

So what is up with that??? I have never been over a week late before. Could it be that all of the weight loss is causing strange things to happen with my cycle???

Heather,

Hi cutie! You and I seem to be in the same boat, yet different situations. My period arrived on saturday on the EXACT date it came in August, meaning it was right on time, which has NEVER happened to me before. Even though I was a little disappointed to get it since we're trying, the fact that I have now gone 3 consecutive months with a period every month is amazing to me. Maybe weight loss has finally helped regulate my cycles?!?

As for you, a few bits of advice/knowledge. Yes, weight loss can dramatically influence the dates and timing of your cycle, as can obsessing about getting it when hoping/wondering if you're pregnant. As well, I am a big believer in dollar store pregnancy tests, they have always worked immediately and been accurate for me. Just ensure the expiration date on the box hasn't passed (I've never found an expired one, but I know Dollar Stores sell old merchandiuse sometimes). As well, you cannot take the dollar store tests before you miss a period, but other than that, they work wonderfully!

If you truly think there's a chance you conceived this month, all the fertility sites say that certain women's cycles will cause them to have negative test all the way up to 5 days late. So, if you're really late on your visit from Aunt Flo and have taken negative tests, I'd prob assume it's stress and your weight loss influencing your metabolic systems and periods.

Hi Heather,

just read your post. How regular are your periods? Sometimes, you can be pregnant and just test too early. If there is a Dollar Store or Dollar Tree close by they sell pregnancy tests and they are acurate. (trust me. The dollar store test told me both times!)

Relax as much as you can and then get thee to a dollar store and test again. Good luck and baby dust.

So Aunt Flo arrived right on schedule for the first time EVER this past weekend. Why is it that my cycle is finally working itself out at the very stage in my life when i want nothing but to not have it and be preg? Anyhoo, I'm choosing to see it as a positive thing, hopefully it will make ovulation and everything more on schedule and regulated.

BUT, I am not quite done with the pity party thrown by me, in my honor. A depressing thought occured to me. If DH and I don't successfully concieve until April or later, we won't be parents until 2010. That just seems so far away...sigh.

How's everyone else doing?

EMJ - April is a LONG way off ... lots of good sex can happen in that time ... :smile2:

TRY not to stress... i think it does hinder you...

So what is up with that??? I have never been over a week late before. Could it be that all of the weight loss is causing strange things to happen with my cycle???

Well . . . still no visit from Aunt Flo since I went off birth control in mid-August . . . took several tests from 9/15 on and nothing . . . until last night. I took another one on a whim (equate brand) and I got a + but the pregnancy line was hardly discernable. The test lines were this color and the pregnancy line was a little lighter than this color. So it was my last test and I bought a different one this morning (Answer brand) and made sure that I caught my first urine of the morning. It was the same result except this one shows just two lines. However, the second line was a little clearer in this test.

So I suspect I might just be pregnant. I will take a final test in a few days to see if the color changes or I get a more positive result. Perhaps I ovulated late being my first cycle off of birth control and I did not actually conceive until around the time my TOM was due.

With these pale colored lines . . . do you think it is possibly a false positive? I am afraid to get too excited just yet.

Heather, based on everything I read (remembering off the top of my head) some people can read pregnancy from date of ovulation as early as 7 days, most people it takes at least 15 days, and some--even longer. Everyone is different. And with that, everyone is different when they ovulate..

The 'generic' ovulation is the middle of the between-periods, but not everyone is like that.

So for example, you may ovulate 5 days before your period, and a week from your missed period is only 13 days.

From what you've said--and I'm no expert, just from what I read-- sounds like you could be pregnant, but very early on, and you ovulate late in the month.

Wait another week and take the test again

If pale lines now were an indicator, in a week, you should have solid unmistakable lines.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
