I was told not to take Aleve or other Ibuprophin after surgery. I am starting to exercise and I am in pain. Does anyone else have this problem, and do you take Aleve or Ibuprophin to take care of the stifness.

My doctor told me NO anti-inflammatories at all. After being banded, Tylenol is your pain medicine of choice. But if you are stiff from exercise, the most helpful things will be Water and stretching.

Ditto here. In addition, the medication they put me on after banding was Vicoprofin - a combination of Vicoden and Ibuprofin. Taking more IB at home would have just been an overdose for me.

Most Dr.s suggest no NSAIDs, Tylenol is Acetaminophen, not an NSAID. The reason for no NSAID's is due to the increased chance of stomach ulcers. (NSAIDs are known to cause ulcers), since your new tummy is so small, the pill would land in the same place over and over, increasing your chance even more for ulcers. (this is how it was explained to me).

I can't remember is I can put a link in here, but here goes:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With that being said, I have a pinched nerve and every now and again I have to take a Flexeril. A prescription NSAID. I freaked out, called my surgeon, he said it is fine to take - break it as small as I can (so it goes through the pouch), drink with lots of liquids. He said as long as I don't take them often I should be fine.

I take Naproxen 550mg (aleve prescription strenght) for cramps. It is the ONLY thing that helps me with cramps. I was worried when I got the band that I could still take it. I asked my surgeon and he said if I only take it a few times a month, it was ok. He said the problems occur when you take NSAID's on a regular basis. I only take it when it's bad and I have had no problems at all.

hey minpinmom...just an FYI...flexeril is a muscle relaxant not an NSAID, it does not thin the blood or cause ulcers. as long as you can swallow it, it will not hurt your band.

well, stiffness from exercise I would ignore and not take any medication for.

But I do get very bad backpain at times and the only thing that really helps is a dose of nurofen which is ibuprofen.

My doc has OK'd it occasionally. I usually need 2 tablets and that'll be it, its enough to break the inflammation cycle and if I need more pain relief a couple of panadol (paracetamol) will suffice after that. That's usually at period time, the backpain and cramps go hand in hand.

I certainly wouldnt be popping ibuprofen on anything like a regular or even semi regular basis. Its not good for non banded people either.

My surgeon gave me liquid ibuprofen right after my surgery and it worked wonders. I guess it must be OK if you are only using it for occasional pain...

Thanks for your help. I have gone back to work and the walking is murder on my feet, back, and hips. I was looking online and saw that there is a liquid ibuprofin. Would that be ok to use?

Ibuprofin comes in a liquid form for children. I wonder if a little of that would be okay for extreme pain. I am putting that on my list of questions for the doc.

I am NOT a doctor (yet...hehe), but I will tell you this. Ibuprofen is JUST FINE most of the time, even for mild to moderate pain/discomfort. People worry too much about it.

Jaqui is partly right. I wouldn't take a large dose(+60-80ish mg/day) on a regular basis because studies have shown more stomach issues tend to arise after a while, however, taking ibuprofen occasionally for pain is absolutely fine for most.

WARNING: There are people who should not take it because they have other issues, but they usually know who they are. If you've taken: Advil, Wal-profen, or things that have ibuprofen in them and you have not had issues before, chances are that you won't have any issues now.

If you have any other questions, let me know so I can clear it up...

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
