What was your "Last Meal" before starting the pre-surgery diet???

Recommended Posts

I feel like its a death row question and I am aware that we get to eat again so that is not what this is about. Just for fun what was your "LAST MEAL" before starting the liver shrinking pre op diet? Ill go first. I had a Memorial day weeked where I smoked pork and a beef brisket on Saturday. Then my actual last meal was a Cajun style seafood boil with crab legs, crawdads, shrimp, corn and potatoes. Also had sea scallops just not done in the boil. it was done in a spicy cajun seasoning and was amazing. This morning was a coffee flavored Protein Drink.

My dad's Easter lamb chops with asparagus and mashed potatoes. He didn't do so well and they were so raw they were practically frolicking and bleating. Gross.

All of my "last meals"--and I had several, including overnight travel to a city I used to live in to go to some of my favorite restaurants--ended up pretty disappointing, which is to be expected. food is almost* never as amazing as I remember it, which was a good reminder pre-surgery. There's not actually that much to miss.

*Michelin-star restaurant meals being the only exception. That's as amazing as I remember it.

My last meal was Marco's pepperoni pizza and cheesy bread. That was actually my last two meals -- I got a whole pizza and order of cheesy bread and ate half of each on each of my last two days before surgery.

I planned out a whole week of food funerals, but the catch was that I had to stay under 2,000 calories per day (I lost 70 pounds in the 5 months before surgery by limiting calories). The half pizza and half cheesy bread was my entire 2000 calories for each of the last two days.

The rest of the week (which I know because I recorded it all in MyFitnessPal) included:

  • Ribs and sidewinder fries from my favorite local restaurant
  • Steak and onion rings (the steak was a ribeye from Walmart and really disappointing -- I wish I had splurged on a better steak) and half a piece of cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory (660 calories for half the slice!)
  • Red Baron pizza and the other half of the slice of cheesecake
  • Bacon cheeseburger that was voted the best burger in the city and a Klondike bar
  • Pizza and wings from Pizza Hut

I... really liked pizza. Before surgery, if I so much as saw an extra eating pizza in the background of a TV show, I would get an insatiable craving for pizza. Once a week, I would fast all day so I could have a whole Red Baron pizza as my one meal for the day (their brick oven pizza is underrated in the frozen pizza world). After surgery, I made some attempts at healthy pizza (e.g., chicken crust, low-carb tortilla crust) but eventually came to realize there were much tastier and healthier things that I would rather eat. I haven't had real pizza since my surgery (almost 3 years ago) or anything even resembling pizza in the last couple of years and, oddly enough, I don't miss it.

We went to Outback. Prime rib, mashed potatoes, asparagus. And of course, bread, blooming onion, and a gallon of sweet tea. I think we did dessert too, but I honestly don't remember.

I did the rounds of my favourite restaurants that week. Thai, Indian etc. On my last day I did my favourite Chinese take away, Ribs, a spring roll and beef steak in a black bean and chilli sauce with rice. Ate the entire thing and rolled away from the table.

A week or so before I went to Fuddruckers. I love their ribeye steak sandwich. I would still love to eat one now once and awhile but they have closed down in our area [emoji24].

Ribeye, salad, and fries from one of my favorite places. That was a couple days before. The actual "last supper" as we've been jokingly calling it, was last night. Hubs grilled some burgers and Conecuh sausage and we had potato salad with it. I had a Reese's for dessert. On to liquid today. So far, iced coffee.

I got my insurance approval on a Thursday, and scheduled my bypass for 9 days later, so my diet was supposed to start immediately. I was traveling home that Thursday, so I got Chipotle (with chips and salsa), which is one of my favorite meals (but not too bad so I could tell myself I was kinda starting the diet :D )

Spaghetti with tomato-based meat sauce topped with grated parmesan cheese. No bread. I pretty much stuck to my dietician's recommendations for the 3 months before surgery. Even skipping a family Easter dinner. I kept remembering, reading the warning that if I regained weight my surgery would be cancelled. That pretty much kept me on the straight and narrow.

@BabySpoons I didn't have to lose any before the liver shrinking diet so I ate pretty normal. It's funny I have people give me crap for having this surgery because "I'm not THAT big". people don't realize there is more to it then size. I have been diabetic for 12 years and 8 would like to stop taking all the medication that will eventually destroy my kidneys.

Great to hear you are keeping strong. Will only help in the long run.

I've heard amazing things of people reversing diabetes, sometimes days after surgery. Even before losing the weight. I am prediabetic and hoping for similar results. Doc said he'll run some lab work at my 3 month visit.

It's my goal too, to eventually be off all my meds.

People can't seem to see past the weight loss aspect of the surgery and how much more it helps in resolving the comorbidities that are slowly killing us.

I wish you the best and keep us posted on your progress. Oh and fun thread. Smoked brisket sounds amazing!!!!

Funny enough, they scheduled my EGD for the day before my liver-shrinking liquid diet was supposed to start. So I spent most of the day with no food OR Water, but after the EGD, I went to Mission BBQ for brisket and mac & cheese and cornbread :)

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
