1 year after Sleeve surgery...

Recommended Posts

Today marks 1 year since i had gastric sleeve surgery.

Starting weight 317lb, Current weight 193lb

Hunger comes back with a vengeance. There is not a single piece of food that i have issues with from healthy to very unhealthy stuff... So that is something i have to watch closely because i can get very bad cravings for sweets like donuts, pastries, bread ect... I can eat a lot more now than before. So have to watch that portion size and stop with the snacking. I could have probably lost more weight if i actually worked out but i rarely ever worked out. Just too busy with work. But overall i am very happy with the way i look now. love being able to find clothing at any store, no issues flying coach ect... Last week i took my 1 year bloodwork. still waiting for the results on that. I am moving next month across the country for my job so that is exciting.

congrats! You've done very well! And you could still lose weight - albeit very slowly at this point. I continued losing until I was 20 months out.

re: exercise, they say losing weight is 90% food-related, and only 10% exercise-related, so you may have lost a bit more, but probably not much. I know people who've almost never exercised and still lost a ton of weight after WLS. That said - exercise is great for your health and also helps you maintain your loss once you reach your goal - but as far as active losing, it only plays a small part.

Your stats are amazing. Imagine loosing 3 inches off your neck. I wish I had done the measurements too.

Lab test literally just came back to my email. My Bilirubin levels continue to rise... My Iron saturation, total were low, and Vitamin D low. My cholesterol levels are all in the green. Way way into the green when before surgery they were sooooo high.

low Vitamin D is super common, and not just with WLS patients. A supplement should bring that back up.

as far as bilirubin, sometimes liver enzymes are out of whack the first year or so after WLS because losing weight - esp as quickly as we do - is really hard on livers. I think my bilirubin was OK, but my AST and ALT levels were really high the first year. By the end of the second year, they were back to normal. Although your doctor may recommend you follow up just in case it's something else - but often that's all it is.

Congratulations @liveaboard15. How great about your cholesterol levels too. Keep it up You never know how much more you’ll achieve.

Don’t worry too much about your bilirubin levels yet especially while you are still losing. Almost 4 years out mine is still high but we discovered Gilbert’s Syndrome runs in the family & as I experienced many of the symptoms it’s likely I have that & always did just didn’t know it. Gilbert’s is quite common. Not debilitating or limiting in any way. My Vitamin D levels drop in winter (when I hibernate) so I use a Vitamin D & K mouth spray (love it - no pills to swallow - yay!) late autumn to early spring.

Yep, exercising only accounts for about 10% of the weight you are to lose. Of course there are other benefits but the choice is yours. I’m not an exerciser & I still lost all my weight & more & have basically maintained. I do some stretches, use some resistance bands & some sit ups (I hate them but they’re good for the lower back) over about 4 sessions of 5-10mins each day. Would burn maybe 30 calories. I only do this to help with my back & for a little toning.

Huge congrats OP. I have loved reading your posts. So fab to see this degree of loss to date and absolutely yes you may still lose more for sure! I've just checked and I lost another 15lbs after my surgery 1 year anniversary. Still losing a teeny tiny amount almost 18 months out - like a quarter pound a week or less, LOL! Keep the faith. You have done amazingly well x

This is really helpful (and inspiring). I am 5 days out from my surgery, wondering what the future will look like. Your post helps me to push forward because things will get better. Plus, I should start tracking my measurables as you did. I like the idea of seeing progress across my entire body.

Congrats! You've done fantastic!! I'm almost 3 years out and can relate to much of what you've said with regards to hunger coming back and being able to eat quite a bit more. Just curious though, do you find that it "comes and goes"? There are some days I feel huge restriction - like I can only eat a few bites of something, and then others I am hungry all day. Doesn't seem to matter what type of food it is (protein, salad, or slider foods).

Also, much like you, I've had no issues with any different foods (sometimes I wish I did!).

Funny you mention this @MandoGetsSleeved. Almost 4 years out & I experience odd things too. Like, the last couple of days, I’ve been having prawns for lunch. Now I often eat prawns for lunch but this time my restriction kicked in every time before I ate the number of prawns I’d usually eat. The pack of green prawns I bought was always two meals for me no problems. This time I got three meals out of it. I don’t rely on my restriction to signal to stop eating so this was strange. Plus I almost got the foamies yesterday. Don’t know why. Just an idiosyncrasy of my sleeve I think.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
