Timing, meals, postop

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am about 10 days postop from having the sleeve, and as a lot of people, I am having trouble getting all of my meals in. I was wondering if anybody had any tips such as setting a timer to remind you to have a meal, and if you did set a timer, how often did you set it for?

I ate and pretty much still do eat every 3 hours! That’s a schedule that works for me and that’s about how often I really do feel hungry

I’ve found setting a routine of when I eat very helpful. Started doing it because I had no appetite or interest in eating but knew I had to eat something. I still eat to a routine almost 4 years later. I’ve never set a timer not even to remind me to sip fluids. I just eat to the time on the clock. I can eat earlier or later than those set times or miss a meal/snack (conflicting appointments, commitments, travelling, not hungry, etc.) but I don’t eat additional snacks/meals between those times.

Honestly, I really only ate two ‘meals’ a day those first two weeks. Sipped those shakes & Soups for ages as I diluted them for extra Fluid & so they’d taste a little better (they didn’t). Started my Breakfast shake at around 8am & my dinner Soup around 5pm if I remember correctly. On purées I began three meals a day & I added a mid afternoon snack I think from solid foods to ensure I was better meeting goals. My surgeon & dietician were okay with this as I was slowly increasing my intake every week.

My surgery was 2/13/23 and I still can’t meet my liquid and Protein goals. I feel hungry but I can’t drink enough, is that normal?

My progress has been almost entirely built on routine; if I'm going to change my life I have to build a life that can be successful.

I told my husband once I know Future Me is lazy; Current Me has to prepare for that so Future Me has no excuses. So for instance, if I've already got veggies and things cut up for salads or dipping, Lazy Me isn't going to go for the less-healthy option that needs prep work!

I'm constantly sipping something all day long to meet my goals. By the time I can finish a Protein Shake, then have some Water, it's now time for a snack, so I'll have a bit of yogurt, more water, now it's lunch time so I warm up some Soup and so on throught the day. I'm worried about developing a bad habit of constantly "eating/swollowing" something. I'm able to meet my protein/water goals barely by working at it all day.

This is very common this soon after surgery simply because you’re slowly sipping all your ‘meals’ as well as additional fluids to meet your goals. Once on solid food this will change.

It happened again when I was trying to maintain. Because my meal sizes were still smaller (couldn’t eat more at a sitting) I couldn’t get in the calories I needed to maintain so I was snacking (on nutritious foods) several times a day. It felt like I was eating all day then too. Then when my portion size increase a bit more I didn’t need as many Snacks it didn’t feel as much like all I did was eat.

My surgery was 2/13 as well and I’m in the same boat. I’m just now able to drink some Water a little better but still only getting about 30oz. The Protein makes me sick so that’s not even come close. I’m worried about it.
I had to go back in fluids once too.
Then I see some people with no trouble at all.

Don’t worry we will slowly meet our goals you just need to make sure you don’t get dehydrated. I hate Water so I am doing sugar free apple juice. Check with your doctor and if it’s ok that would be much easier than water. For Protein I got protein yogurt and it’s tasty and easy to swallow.

You’re allowed juice? That’s unusual because of the naturally high sugar content. There are many pieces of fruit used in a glass of juice than you’d eat as fresh whole fruit & without all the nutritional benefits of whole fruit. Fresh whole fruit is always the better choice from when your allowed solid food.

A squeeze of lemon, lime or other citrus added to your water is generally okay & can help make water easier to drink in the beginning. But yes, check with your team.

Agreed on an alarm every 3 hrs. It might feel a lot but as time goes by your body will eventually let you know on your own what schedule feels right!

How are you doing today? Checking in because I am having the same issue. Our surgery was the same day and I’m getting half my Water in and next to nothing for Protein. I can’t stand the taste or smell anymore.

I just had my surgery Friday, and honestly I’m still working on getting in my fluids, and barely am hitting 40oz still… Protein is no where near where it needs to be, but i can only focus on one goal at a time right now. Once I can hit Fluid goal, i will worry about Proteins. I couldn’t even keep my antibiotics down the first three days, so i will pick my battles at this point.

It can be hard at first to hit those goals. Your poor tummy is super sensitive, your taste buds may have changed (temporary) & you’re likely not hungry or interested in eating. As long as you’re close & working towards your goals it’s okay. Don’t forget your shakes & broths count as fluids too. Shakes usually are 20-30g of Protein depending on the brand. Sip them just like you do your other fluids - doesn’t matter if it takes an hour or more to drink your shake. I used to add twice the Water to the mix to dilute the flavour & texture of the shake & to get down more fluids. It would take me a couple of hours to drink one but it was 1/4 of my Fluid & a good 1/3 of my protein goals.

You’ll get there.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
