Coming off caffeine/coffee

Recommended Posts

I am working on detoxing caffeine before surgery. I mostly drink black coffee (about 1 cup a day) and rarely take in caffeine from other sources, though it does happen. What tip do you have to avoid withdrawal? Also, what do you do post-op to enjoy a hot cup? Thanks!

I mixed the caffeine free and the caffeinated tea/coffee slowly reducing the caffeinated until I went completely caffeine free coffee and tea. Caffeine free still has a small amount of caffeine in it though, but I didn't get that dreaded caffeine withdrawal headache.

This amazes me every time I read a new post about it. I was sleeved 14 months ago. I did not have to give up caffeine - the very first liquid I was given post op was black coffee. The difference in programmes never ceases to amaze me. Sorry you're having to go through this, sounds completely miserable. Only times I have ever given up caffeine were during my pregnancies and I still remember the headaches - world class. 😣

same here. Although like the person above said, not everyone is required to give up caffeine. There seems to be zero consensus among surgeons on this issue.

I was never told to quit drinking coffee, My first drink in hospital was a milky coffee.

I'm cutting down less and less caffeine every week. I don't want the caffeine withdraw headaches if I go cold turkey at the time of surgery. I do green tea during the week and one cup of my favorite coffee on weekends.

I never really stopped lol. Even now i drink several cups a day. After surgery i chilled and instead drank the Premier Protein coffee latte one and it tasted amazing and has about the same caffeine as a cup of coffee.

My team wants me off coffee before and after surgery...fun. They suggested no coffee ever, but not sure that's going to happen.

I also wonder about the discrepancies between surgeons. I never went off coffee/ caffeine and never seemed yo do any harm although I’ll say that it took a long time before I could get through even half a cup before it got cold

My team suggest that as well. However, I am a huge five cup a day girl. I have cut it down to one. Today has been none. My VSG is scheduled for March 9. However, I came to this forum trying to find anyone to agree with me that I can still have the juice. :) I need the pick me up. The headaches are horrid.

Caffeine headaches are no joke. Have you tried stepping down to tea? I know it's not as exciting as the juice 🤣, but it helps. Good luck!

Thankfully coffee was not off my doctors list. The first thing they brought me in hospital was a milky coffee, win win

I would choose unsweetened coffee over juice. Juice spikes my insulin and my blood sugar but still makes me hungry. Try Protein if you need a pick-me-up. I lost 40 lbs over the year before my surgery by preferring protein and complex carbs over sugars and white carbs (pasta, bread, rice, milk, and potatoes). I dropped an additional 60 lbs since my sleeve surgery on 12/30/2022 by eating the same way but much lesser amounts that my much smaller stomach allows me.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
