November 2022 surgery support!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

had Gastric Bypass on 11/14 and so far it has been way easier and less painful than expected. The only thing is I put on 10 pounds over night from when I was weighed before surgery and when I got home the next day. I’m SLOWLY losing that Water weight… but still 4 pounds higher than when I went in.

but I’m walking, drinking well, getting tired of Protein shakes… would kill for some grilled salmon or even cottage cheese! fortunately, my appetite is under control so when my son eats his meals, I’m not (too) jealous!

Hi!
officially post op day 4, I had a rough go of it in the beginning, the day after surgery I wasn’t able to hold anything down, vomitted twice which they say is normal, the next day was much better, pain went down and was able to hold everything down, but didn’t meet the required amount of ounces to drink to go home, so had to stay another day but was able to reach that goal and officially home, thank god! But still get nauseous alittle bit here and there, gonna start drinking the Protein Shakes, I wanna find out when I can start eating sugar free popsicles because they said the cold can cause spasms so not to start too early, anyone have any info on that?

11/3 surgery

hitting the expected stall a little early… been same weight since friday- but it’s all good! that to me means healing at this stage and after what i have been through healing is great…

i am feeling good, just a little achy and my stamina is starting to improve … still have some issues with enough liquids, but reaching over 50 oz so not far to go… so far experimenting with purée has gone well… i full easy but my body hasn’t rejected food yet!

continuing to get hiccups and burps if i drink or eat too quickly … gotta listen to that !

Got a call from my doctor today that for TOMORROW I might have to get the bypass instead of sleeve… due to some intestinal metaplasia, and small piece of esophagus showing it’s a bit irritated… he’s going to scope again before procedure to determine…. I’m a tad bit freaking out now… anyone here recently get bypass? How are you feeling?

I have this same feeling!!! I am winded and have to catch my breath. Surgery was 11/15. I think our bodies are just catching up to all of these huge changes. The digestive system is pretty much the control center of the body.

Surgery day! Heading to the hospital, have to be there at 830, procedure at 1 or earlier. The hotel I'm at its 3min away so I will get there early, since I'm up lol. I'm still feeling good, I think I may be one of those that get a panic attack there lol

I added my toiletries because I remembered I cannot have deodorant or lotion on, deff need that later.

Took a sip of Water with my BP medicine, but man am I thirsty, had the 2nd ensure drink last night and that is pure carbs.

This is my first post!

I was sleeved 11/11 and just started the puree stage (my program calls it "smooth textures") on Sunday - yesterday was the first day I managed to hit both my Protein and fluid goals, which was really exciting. I managed to eat 4oz of refried Beans and hot sauce in the morning, but in the evening could only finish half of the ricotta and egg white scramble I made, so the rest was made up via Protein Shakes.

I'm so happy to be able to add some savory foods back to my diet - I don't have the biggest sweet tooth and I was getting so sick of the taste of protein shakes last week. Right now fluids are still giving me the most trouble, but I've been having better luck using the Owala water bottle with the built-in straw and it hasn't been giving me trouble with extra air. I don't know if it's because I don't swallow as I'm drinking, I still hold all the Fluid in my mouth for a second because I'm afraid of taking too big of a drink no matter how I'm drinking it, but I'm glad I can still use my favorite Water bottle so far.

Had bypass the 22nd. … yesterday was the worst of it didn’t want to drink anything only sleep. Today not feeling pain or nausea. Really paying attention to my liquids and intake to get my Fluid goal. Hiccups woke me up the middle of the night. Adding ice to my Protein Shakes to Water down since they are to thick.

Hey y’all, this is my first post. I had the sleeve on 11/21 & it’s been bumpy. Surgical pain was really bad, which surprised me. I didn’t expect to be pain free but I certainly wasn’t expecting what I got! I ended up needing 2 units of blood & a cardiac consult before I left bc my pulse was so high. They decided it was due to low h & h and uncontrolled pain. They have pumped me completely FULL of IVF. I came home 14 lbs heavier than I went in! I’m 5 days post op & have just now reached my surgery weight. My big issue is that I’m hungry. Stomach growling & roiling churning hungry. So weird. I was not expecting this at all. For full disclosure purposes, I cheated pretty badly on my preop clears. Like BADLY. Do you think I ruined it? That I will never lose my hunger, or just that my hormones need to level out? Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
