Anyone have WLS and gallbladder removal at the same time?

I'm scheduled October 11th for VSG and due to a history of gallstones my surgeon is going to remove my gallbladder at the same time. Has anyone else had a double procedure? I have a list of questions for my surgeon at our last pre-op appointment, but I'm curious to hear any similar experiences from someone whose gone through it.

My Doc generally did it prophylactically since so many people had Gaul Bladder issues later. We talked and he agreed he wouldn't do it unless it was necessary. It was necessary, it was already in quite poor shape. As far as I know I haven't missed it.

I am having the same and just curious if it changes your diet or anything?

I did not have my gallbadder out but had what my surgeon called "3 surgeries at once"

I have a MAJOR hernia fixed, had bypass and had "scraping and trimming" of my esophagus to fix extensive damage from GERD.

That sounds intense! How was your recovery after all of that?

I had mine removed 2yrs after but there won’t be additional changes to your post surgical bariatric diet by having it removed at the same time. After I had mine removed I was back to my usual eating plan the next day. There won’t be additional wounds either as they use the same ones to remove your tummy as your gall. The post surgical discomfort was much the same between the surgeries except I had gas pain after the gall surgery & none after my sleeve.

Generally, you may have a little more discomfort & gas pain simply because the surgery will be a little longer & there’s more ‘prodding & poking’ than just with the sleeve alone.

The only thing you may notice after your gall removal is you may not tolerate fatty or oily foods long term but that won’t be an issue post surgery anyway with the changes to your diet to support your weight loss. I also get a build up of stomach acid as the gall isn’t there to regulate it anymore but then you’ll be prescribed a PPI (reduces acid) after your surgery anyway.

Actually it was quite easy.

I ended up staying 2 night in the hospital rather than the original one night that was planned. The gas pain the first night was horrible, like no one could prepare me for it. haha I have a very high tolerance for pain too and rarely take narcotics. (Had a huge surgery on my leg years ago, they literally cut my leg in half and put it back together and NEVER took one pain pill)

Anyway, by the second day the gas pain was minor and I went home. Took 1 pain pill before leaving the hospital and then never took another one. (Not even Tylenol).

By day 3 I had a smidge of pain in my shoulder (still gas) and then it was smooth sailing from there out.

Drank the tiniest sips humanly possible for a few days and then was even drinking normal again.

Had a annoying ache in my chest for about a week but my surgeon said it was because of the Esophagus repairs he did and it would pass, it did.

Really, I am so thankful how easy my recovery was.

I wish you the best, I am sure you will be just fine though. Most of what people complain about it the gas pains, they were just more than I expected.

Side note: My surgeon said he gave me a double dose of gas because of everything he had to do in my upper chest he needed extra room. So he said mine would probably be a little worse.

I am thinking about this too. I have pancreatitis so they are waiting for it to resolve before removing my gallbladder but I’m in the insurance authorization process right now for vsg. I’m contemplating getting them done at the same time.

My surgeon for the gall bladder is the one that suggested doing them at the same time. I’m hoping it will not make the recovery longer but I also don’t want to have two surgeries. Good luck to you!
