Nausea, Puking and Other - 11 days post op

11 days post op, and I'm not sure if I am either doing something wrong, something is wrong with my body or both. Whether I'm resting, moving or sitting all I feel is a need to throw up (and I do puke a lot, needing a bowl around me 24/7).

My body heats up rapidly along with a very rapid heart beat from minimum activity or even being just sedentary. I do take in the fact that I am obese (313 lbs right now) and physical activity has easily excited my body, but this level of just walking across the room feeling my heart pounding and needing to puke out my guts.

Despite all this I try to (following guidelines on how to lightly consume and time between) injest my needed liquids and Proteins. It's just incredibly frustrating and scary feeling the need to throw up all my liquids just from lightly sipping my Water or Protein Shake. In fact most of my activity is laying/sitting trying to keep down and sip my needed fluids.

My family has highly advized me to keep being active, and I try but not as hard as I should I know. They think all this is something I need to just push through but I'm just not sure if that is right. For my surgeon, Dr. Turnquest, I had my virtual checkup with him yesterday and did inform me it's highly unusual for the puking, and after giving me a prescription to help keep fluids down, said to keep in touch within 48 hours about this.

Just wanted to flesh out my entire situation right now, so if anyone can tell me if it's something wrong, me being too sedentary, etc. I'd like to know.

I would contact your surgeon and let them know. If they haven't already prescribed ondansetron (aka Zofran), perhaps ask them for it. It is a good anti-nausea pill that melts on your tongue. I used to keep it with me in my backpack, so just in case, I can take it anywhere without Water. Works in minutes.

Also, if you're vomiting that much and have a rapid heartbeat, you could be dehydrated, and that needs to be addressed now, if that's the case. Dehydration can make nausea worse. How's your urine output? Is it decreased in volume, is your urine dark? It's worth putting in a call to your surgeon so that they can decide if you need to go to the ER for IV fluids, and to get meds for the nausea.

Yeah I take that and now Metoclopramide (since yesterday) before my meals. It's sort of a coin flip if relieves nausea.

I have low urine output and it is dark yellow. And it's totally dehydration, I track how much I drink, and out of the 64 ounces I'm supposed to consume a day, I barely reach half that daily. My surgeon basically told me to push through it and keep drinking, and I will.

I agree with it being dehydration.
I say forget trying to push through it & go to an ER to get some fluids!
It could have been nausea from the anesthetic that cause may have lasted 5-8 days & now your body is dehydrated & can’t catch up without an iv.
Dehydration is a huge thing to watch out for! My daughter has to really make sure she drinks enough liquid each day! She got dehydrated 5 months after her surgery & passed out at work! Scared the crap out of her coworkers. She also passed out in a convenience store once because she was dehydrated!

My advice- get an ekg done by your primary doctor or even urgent care. You heart feeling like it’s thumping out of your chest is called palpitations and could be a sign of something else. Better to be safe than sorry.

(This suggestion is bias in that I work with cardiac patients and would rather you be safe.)

You need fluids and if you are already dehydrated you are not going to just push through. If I were you I would call my dr back and ask for him to arrange for fluids at the very least. I would also go to urgent care or the ER and ask for an ekg (they may be able to do fluids as well at urgent care but definitely can at ER if you want to get both taken care of now and be done with it). I agree with starwarsandcupcakes that heart palpitations are not to be taken lightly. Could be nothing but could also be something serious. Better to be safe than sorry. Plus, it’s probably worth it to feel better. They can figure out a nausea Med that actually works if just the fluids doesn’t help tremendously which they probably will if you are dehydrated cause it causes nausea. And in terms of your family suggesting you exercise. I agree it’s important to try to get up and move around some to prevent blood clots at this point if you can safely but you can worry about exercising later when you feel better. And If you can’t do it safely then you definitely need to Have someone take you to the ER.

When you drink or eat, does it feel like it gets stuck in your upper stomach/esophagus? And take forever to go down?

Hey guys, I went to the ER and got a ekg done (along with ultrasounds, CT scans and x-rays) and the doctor concluded (along with contact with my main surgeon) that I had a Ileus bowl obstruction that was preventing intake of nutrients and fluids.

Tomorrow I will be going to have a personal appointment with my surgeon about to how to handle the situation from now on, right now I got prescribed multiple medications to helps keep my fluids down and soothe my sore throat.

I’m so glad you got it looked at and they figured out what was going on. Hopefully it’s an easy fix and you can get back on track without being so nauseated! Good luck!

I had no idea what that was. I just looked it up. OMGoodness!!!! I'm so so glad you went and had everything checked out. I was about to say dehydration but everyone beat me to it lol Then I saw your update and I just wanted to reach out and tell you I hope everything works out. Does your surgeon have anything in mind for taking care of this?
