58 here.

As you know, the older we get, the longer it takes to heal. This is major surgery, so give yourself some grace and just know it's going to take a while before you feel good. I also told my wife to expect that I'm going to have buyers remorse (at least early on), so her job is to remind me why I did it.

As you pointed out, the liquid portion of the diet can be challenging. The Vitamin regimen isn't that big a deal for me. A bigger challenge right now is just how hard it is to take all my meds. I admit I'm on a lot of medications, but it's going to take me 2.5-3 hours a day to take everything. That should get better soon, at least I hope. I should be able to drop some of the meds, and it should get easier to take more at once like I used to.

I really love salads all kinds . Love the kale salad at chick filet wondering if I’ll ever be able to eat them again .

Eventually you should be able to have salads again, but just less. Raw veggies are definitely going to be later in your plan, so it may be several months before you're actually able to eat salads. Also keep in mind that sweet dressings may not be tolerated well, so keep an eye on the sugar content.

Well said!! I wasn’t expecting that feeling and I spent most of my first week post op wondering wtf did I just do?? Everyday I was annoyed about it and it took a lot of self-talk and reassurance to get through it!

Hi,

First of all , am so happy I found this site. I think it will be more than a little helpful!

I am 62 yrs old so anyone my age that is going through or has gone through this I would appreciate any tips you could give. I am looking forward to having energy again and just being able to be healthy. This all started because I have to have my gall bladder removed and they are going to do the Bypass at the same time. I guess I am more nervous about taking all the Vitamins and the liquid portion of the diet. I am finishing up some appointments next week. I am hoping I can do an at home sleep apnea test instead of going in. I still work and wondering about how much time I will need to recover.

I have only told a few close friends and close family but I have'nt told my daughter who is an RN and not a fan of WLS. I am hoping it will not be a difficult conversation.

Thanks again for all the good information! Good luck on your journeys.

I am turning 48 soon, so close. I just had GVS and it went really well despite having an umbilical hernia to boot. I am back to work, since day 7. However, I do teach from home and sit while working. If I didn't I would say a minimum of two weeks. I tested positive for sleep apnea as well. I don't tell many people about the surgery, not because I am ashamed but rather it is like any other health issue for me, I don't go around talking about them. I tell who needs to know or I tell someone who is struggle and asks me how I am losing my weight. The first few days are super hard, and the tiredness is hard in the beginning as well. You do have to get used to prepping food differently but, this is all worth adding 10 years to my life. Down 17 lbs since surgery on the 12th.

Congratulations! Thanks! I’m also looking forward to a healthier lifestyle. I had planned two weeks to be safe! Continued success for you !

Hi! Newbie here!

I've been lurking forever but couldn't bring myself to post because I just KNEW that something would happen somehow and I wouldn't be able to get my surgery, but... I had my final pre-op testing a couple of days ago and everything went great, so here I am! It's very weird to go from "I'm scared to get my hopes up so I won't even think about the surgery" to realizing that my surgery is on Tuesday and I need to start getting ready.

I'm in Norway so my surgery is covered by the national health care system, but there was a whole process I had to go through - visit with an obesity specialist, a nutritionist, mandatory group classes... it seemed impossibly long when I first started, but wow, it has really flown by.

I was wondering if I can take the Vitamins and meds with applesauce , I know my elderly mom does makes them easier to go down. I need to ask my team about the vitamin patches. How much would you say you spend for vitamins a month after surgery? Thanks so much for your feedback!

So yesterday made three weeks since surgery and I’m 30 pounds down!!! But still feel fat AND NOW I’m scared of regaining weight after reading a re sleeve thread ! I am lost emotionally right now!

First and foremost congrats on your loss .. it’s perfectly normal to feel those feelings !! Negative thoughts try so hard to pour down on our sunshine but the thing is being able to realize them and try and turn them around . Remember it’s not a race and take it a day at a time … you did the hard part by having the surgery now everything else you do is just leading you down your journey to a healthy lifestyle:)

I felt the same way before my surgery. I didn't want to get to excited in case something happened and it was canceled. Sounds like you are set though! Good luck on tuesday.

I think it’s relative for everyone. Some of us have more to lose than others. Some of us lose faster than others due to age, gender, muscle mass…that being said I started at 220 for the preop diet, was 202 surgery day (9/20) and this morning I was 201. I am still pretty swollen and sore, so I am not expecting any major changes to happen for a while. Slow and steady wins the race!

I wouldn't worry to much about it. The first week is usually a bunch of Water weight and other things getting flushed, then your body restores all that and makes it look like you aren't losing anything, but you totally are. Your body is trying to balance itself. I've heard that people who lose on the pre-op diet will have a less dramatic drop after surgery, because your body is already doing the water cycle thing or something like that.

Also, the lower the number you are, the slower you may lose. I was sleeved 9/6, day of surgery 212.4 and I've only lost about 14lbs, 13 of those were from week 1. My plan still has me in the liquid phase too, and I just introduced creamy Soups, so I know it's not what I'm eating. A little disappointing sure, but I'm not gonna stress about it, I can tell my clothes look bigger on me and my family keeps telling me my face looks thinner, so something is happening.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
