Going on 3 weeks post op and can't drink or eat anything

Recommended Posts

I am in the 3rd week puree phase and from the binder I was provided I am supposed to be in this phase for two weeks, then move on to the soft food phase. Is this how everyone else's phases were ?

Every time I drink Water or Protein Shake my stomach makes noises and it's like my stomach flips, so I can only drink small amounts then my chest hurts like I drank too much or something. I am very behind on liquids. I am only drinking 1 bottle of water and 1 bottle of Protein shake sometimes that's even hard. I sometimes squeeze in a broth or Jello. Yesterday a cottage cheese but it made me feel nauseous.

Does anyone else experience these stomach flips or noises ?? I am very hungry and feel like I am never going to be able to eat again 😫

Thats a little odd. I am also 3 weeks and 2 days post op and i have been eating soft foods now for over a week without issue. Most of my day is mornings 2 quail eggs, turkey sausage and cheese, lunch a Protein Shake and dinner typically the same as Breakfast without any issue at all. It does take me about an hour to finish a meal tho. I take small bites, chew very well and wait a bit before taking another bite. as for the noises. I get tons of noises when i eat. It stops once i finish. and i get a little pain at the top of my stomach but thats after each bite. As for Water i drink a 28oz gatorade in 1 hour without issue. Could be you are taking a little longer to heal. what about your Vitamins? are you taking any? That is where i get nauses and feel like throwing up

This is exactly what happened to me and I still struggle to eat 3 months post-op. I have an appointment to have another EGD done in June because they are concerned there could be scar tissue causing the pain and discomfort. Thankfully I have not had any issues with malnutrition or dehydration. It sometimes does take longer to heal than others, is what I was told. It definitely isn't any fun but it will get better. Just make sure you express your concerns to your doctor so it doesn't get swept under the rug.

Yes I am taking a Multivitamin and not the chewable's as they make me feel sick so I prefer a pill and I also am waking up very nauseous every morning or at night time. If I wake up in the middle of the night I am so nauseous. I also noticed I am not losing any weight and I am barely having anything.

you are at your 3rd week stall.. I am in a stall too. I have not lost any weight now for a week now. as for nauseous could be because you are not getting in enough fluids and Protein. Is your pee very yellow? that is a sign of dehydration. If it gets worse it may be best to call your surgeon or go to the ER or urgent care to get fluids via IV.

The squelching, rumbling, groaning & whining are just your digestive system working. Many of us have really noisy tummies now. Happens all day long regardless of whether I’m eating or drinking or not.

The tightness could be from drinking too much &/or too quickly. It’s easy to do at first as you’re learning how everything works for you. But you should be able to sip every couple of minutes & be able to reach or be close to your fluid goals (the shakes & broths etc. all count towards your fluids. Many of us found it easier & more soothing to drink warm drinks than cold.

Give your surgeon a call. There always is a risk of a stricture which are easily fixed. The other concern is potential for dehydration & whether you are getting in enough nutrients.

You're doing puree before soft foods? I'm in my 2nd week of post op liquid diet. After that I move to mushy/soft foods for 2 weeks and then puree for 2 weeks, and then solid foods. I wonder if maybe you went to foods a little more solid or robust than your stomach was ready for...

The stomach noises are normal. The stomach “flip” is concerning. I gotta ask a few basic questions. Did they teach you how to take small sips in the hospital with the little 15ml cups? Do you use a baby spoon when you eat or take small amounts? Do you stop drinking 30 minutes before you eat? I am at week 4 and things feel pretty normal when I eat or drink unless I eat too fast or take a large amount by accident. I don’t want you to get dehydrated, so focus on drinking more often. Lack of Protein is not going to put you in the hospital, but not drinking enough fluids definitely WILL.

Puréed stage is always before soft foods. Soft foods is the final stage before you graduate to regular foods.

My surgeon has me doing mushy foods then puree then solids. And he uses mushy and soft interchangeably. So my understanding from him is that soft and mushy are the same thing. He has puree as the step before solids.

It gets better and you will eat again 😁. Don't compare your experiences to the experiences of others, some have had it easy some have had a hard time but it's all pretty standard. Took me ages to be able to eat with out discomfort I stayed with foods I knew I could eat without issue longer than the phases actually were and that's OK go at your own pace listen to your body.

The nausea is likely from both the multivitamin and dehydration.

The stomach noises/gurgles and pain when you drink too much at once are all normal.

Try keeping a bottle of water/sugar free liquids in your hand or by your side at all times and sip, sip, sip every few minutes (some people set timers on their phones).

It took me a few months before food was comfortable. You still have to eat, even if it's no fun...

Always call your surgery center when something doesn't feel right!

I'll be on soft foods before puréed food.

Very odd. I have never heard of this. I am on 2 forums, in 2 support groups and on a FB bariatric page. Everyone's pr-op diet, length of post-op diets and food lists differ quite a bit from surgeon to surgeon. But, I have NEVER heard of the food phases in a different order. It's liquid, pureed, soft, solid. It doesn't even make sense as to how your stomach would tolerance "solid soft" foods before pureed.

I am not trying to be rude, or under minding but are sure you understood correctly? Didn't get mixed up? Maybe your surgeon says mushy foods as pureed? I could see mushy and pureed kind of being the same thing, but soft is soft. It is solid but soft foods.

That's how I was when I first started my 3-weeks I think what it is is that you're not drinking enough or eating enough so your body is not used to it so I say talk to your doctor about it and keep trying to get your liquids in even if it's just tiny sips just keep sipping all day

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
