Do you ever "forget" you had surgery?

Someone recently posted a thread on here saying “it was the iron” and that they got the Multivitamin with the 18mg of Iron and had no nausea. I wonder if you can take that and take another smaller dose of iron at a different time of day??

I don't think it's the iron because I used to take iron before surgery on an empty stomach with no issues. But, I can try getting it without the iron, just for giggles... I've tried everything else.

Yea because maybe your baby stomach post surgery doesn’t like it??

I’m only one month post surgery, and I thought I was ‘doing well’ then eat too much 2 days ago and had what must have been dumping, such awful cramps etc (I won’t give you tmi but you can guess). So I have gone back to tiny amounts of purees again because my gut just feels sore and upset. So I guess that my ‘forgetting’ I have had the surgery has had horrible consequences.

Re. the getting hungry…I have that as well, but so much of it is ‘head hunger’, I want something sweet after dinner, that’s a habit, and ‘mouth hunger’ I crave crunchy, salty food. It’s not real hunger. My brain is saying ‘but you are eating so little, how can you possibly not be starving hungry’ but if I ignore those messages the ‘hunger’ passes (specially if I drink some liquid. A cup of tea, or a Miso Soup help my 4pm crash. Really, really listening to your body, stopping before you are full is the way to go. I haven’t really been doing that, and the consequences were grim! Anyway hope that helps….I’ve got to deal with this myself, so any ‘advice’ is just my thoughts…I’m not sure there is a magic answer!

I'm almost 2 years post op now and I'm pretty sure surgery is still on my mind every day, but not the surgery itself, just the things I do now to support the surgery, like getting my Protein and Vitamins, etc.
I'm still losing, albeit VERY slowly now, but I had over 200 pounds to lose at the start, and that's part of why it's still on my mind every day. I still track my food, and probably always will, but I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm no longer hungry but not full to the point of restriction.
I have overeaten on a few occasions and it's not comfortable, so I learned pretty early on not to do that and it's become second nature not to stuff myself anymore, which is an amazing thing to me because I pretty much always stuffed myself before surgery.
I feel like what I always imagined people who were never overweight must feel when they eat and it me it's a miracle.
Also, I don't have the raging kind of hunger I had before. I was someone who got hangry. I don't get that way now.
Anyway. I'm rambling, but yes, the fact that I had surgery is still always on my mind, but I welcome that because it keeps me on track. It's a new normal, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

That is what I do. I eat and then eat a little something later to deal with the hunger. I find little Snacks that are sensible really help a lot between larger meals. And...of course...water first to make sure it is just not thirst.

I was going to suggest the same I find on the days I don't drink much I can eat all day and feel very hungry but the days I drink plenty I feel full faster and it lasts longer

I gave up my Multivitamins once I started eating normally all my bloods come back fine and I feel much better for it.

I'm going to ask my surgery center. I still can't eat a ton of produce, and I'm not eating enough Iron. I already don't take the extra Calcium because I get plenty from the ridiculous amount of cheese and milk I eat.

Might be just the way your Vitamin is formulated. Try another brand? LOL my doc said Flintstones twice a day, and that's what I do..for now...

Yeah, I've tried three different brands. They said I could take the Flinstones, but I only find the chewables, and I want a pill

I drink so much, and yes it helps a LOT, and I recommend it too. I find drinking milky tea and coffee is great. I start off my day with a large hot tea and a large iced coffee and often I'm not hungry till 11. It's the hours from 11-6 that I'm hungry pretty much the whole time. And I have to eat, so I have to stop drinking sometimes.

My hunger came back right after 1 month post-Op. So I do get hungry too, may be not as often as you, but every few hours I get hungry and I make sure to eat around there. At times, I don't make it to the food either cuz of my schedule or other reasons but I tolerate it fine.

I have done intermittent fasting in the past and being hungry doesn't bother me much that I have to have to eat it.

Yeh it may be bothersome and may intensify your cravings, but may be try eating to your schedule only and the amount you're allowed per your routine. Rest of the time, ignore your hunger signals by distracting yourself.

Hope your surgical center and you find your way through.

I’m almost 2 years post op and I still kind of feel like my life revolves around my surgery. Not my surgery per se, but everything related to maintaining my weight loss. I spend so much time and energy preparing and eating food. I think so much about what I should eat and constantly have to decide how to “spend” my calories. I constantly analyze whether I’m hungry or full or head hungry. I spend so much time working out. I have to remember to take all my supplements at the right times (since some of them interfere with each other and/or my thyroid medication). It is exhausting! And I often wonder how sustainable this is.

On the upside, though, I try to remember that being morbidity obese was also exhausting! I was constantly worrying about people judging my weight, whether I could fit into chairs or spaces, arriving everywhere early to make sure I wouldn’t have to squeeze between people, hiding what and how much I ate because people were judging (actually, I still hate being watched while I eat, still feel judged, even though I’m eating quite healthy), sweating all the time, etc. So either way, my life revolved around my weight, and on the balance, this side of it is better. But yeah, for me, every day still feels like a struggle.

A pharmacist suggested that I take a multivitamin without Iron, then take a slow-release iron separately. This worked wonders.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
