Rny patients....& Taste change

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I recently had rny surgery in February! I'm struggling alot with the way things that I once loved to eat or smell, are absolutely repulsive to me now. I hate meat alot now, to the point I have to leave a room when cooked.

Has anyone experienced this? Will it get better?

I cannot live off Protein Shakes :(

Hi there, Katy. Congratulations on your surgery! 🙂 I have experienced this as well. I used to love hard-boiled eggs and now they not only cause me a lot of stomach pain, but they do not taste like they used to. The same with Cheez-its. I haven't eaten them, but I was with family on a long drive once and they were passing around a box of cheez-its. I have always loved those, but my gosh the smell now! I don't understand why this has happened, but my nutritionist said it is normal. She said our taste buds do change after surgery and usually will return to normal, but sometimes some things will remain not as pleasant as they were before. I'm hoping I can eat hard-boiled eggs again someday 'cause they're such great Protein and an easy meal.

Thank you! Yeah my nutritionist said it's due to the hormones changing in the gut but omg! My case is extreme. I hate any kind of meat, cheese...I can't do yogurt or sour cream ...seems like literally nothing I like anymore.

My days consist of Protein Shakes and maybe fruit once in a blue moon.

It's mentally challenging to me.

some people's tastes change - and often it's just temporary. Mine didn't really change, they just got more intense. Sweet things tasted sweeter; spicy things tasted spicier. I don't notice it any more - not sure if it went away or if I just got used to it. I still hate bananas, though, and I used to love them. They're just sickeningly sweet to me now. But that's the only thing...

Many experience a temporary change to their taste &/or sense of smell regardless of the surgery they had. It does pass but it can be helpful to break a desire for a specific food. For me it was sweet things. Can also be annoying if it’s a food that would be considered healthy. My favourite vegetables (asparagus, sugar snap peas, broccolini) were disgusting for a while.

How are you tolerating the shakes now. Do you like the shakes?

A bit. I no longer have any feelings toward meat, positive or negative. I used to love burgers. Now when I see meat it doesn't even look real to me, like toy food almost. I eat fish and cheese.

Also I've become almost addicted to perfume/scent. Like smelling the bottle brings me actual pleasure. I didn't wear it at all before surgery.

To be honest I did expect a change in diet and I'm not bothered with breaking up with foods, as long as I like enough foods to eat healthily, I'm happy. If I never eat another burger again, the only people that'll be unhappy will be the Five Guys accountants.

My advice would be to experiment with a wider variety of foods. If you can do a Protein Shake maybe you could do a similarly flavoured yoghurt? Have you tried a very wide variety of cheese? Nuts? Perhaps adding spice might help?

I had severe nausea and almost couldn't eat anything for about a month after my surgery. Even stuff I liked, like those sugar free drink mixes & Jello pudding, smelled repulsive. Everything tasted chemical-y. I would have killed for a piece of unsalted boiled chicken! After two weeks of it I called my doc & he put me on an anti-nausea drug, Ondansetron/Zofran, which worked almost immediately. It did take a while before I could tolerate the sugar-free stuff, though, but I was able to keep Protein Shakes down. Worked great to knock off about 30 lbs in a month, though not great for my health in general.

I can’t tolerate the Protein Drink I had a sleeve 3 years ago but I had bad problems with heart burn so I just got the gastric I had bought fair life Protein Drinks and I had to give them away the only one I can tolerate is a coffee latte from Premier but my doctor just told me that that has caffeine and he doesn’t want me drinking that I can do the egg whites and the Jell-O‘s but that’s about it but it still scares me that I don’t feel full and I really want this to work if anybody has any suggestions

Well I was eating crap before that contributed to my obesity disease so it’s probably good that I can’t eat those now. I discovered a lot of new food so I’m going to say it’s probably a blessing for us but just doesn’t seem like it when you are in the moment having a food funeral. Now I like habernero and jalepeno and flavorful crunchy fresh things lol

I can relate to you as well, it's like the phrase Living to eat, you enjoy your food then, but after Surgery it's that your eating to live and a lot of the yummy food that you used to like now you can't stand, trust me I m 4 months post op RNY and I m still going through this

It’s funny you say that I had the mini gastric bypass and stuff smells more intense now. For example I can’t stomach chicken or even ground turkey..it just smells awful. There are other things that I could not get enough of before surgery that I don’t even think about now… like milk chocolate or cheesecake. I’m glad because I really thought they would be my demise in all of this but I haven’t wanted either.

At almost 2 years post revision I still can’t walk down the baking aisle or the candy aisle at the grocery store because the smell of sugar really bothers me so anything I need for baking I have to order for pickup.
After my sleeve I couldn’t drink anything besides Protein Shakes and grape powderade zero and I hated anything artificial grape before surgery. After my revision from GERD thankfully that went away and I could enjoy actual Water again!
Everything else though was just temporary but I do find I enjoy baby kale now.

I’m 7 months out from a DS and my taste buds are just permanently different.

I still can’t stomach plain Water when I previously exclusively drank water only for decades.

I used to have the most sensitive palate and only liked bland food. Even black pepper was too spicy. Now I eat garlic straight by the head, eat more pepper than my husband, love mustard when before I despised it, etc. it’s really weird. I crave acidic, sharp flavors and don’t like fat anymore (thanks to the gallbladder being taken out).

I'm just embracing it and trying to not feel bad about the foods I used to love making me sick now.
