Keeping up with liquids

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am now 9 days post op still on liquid diet and I’m struggling with a bit of dehydration and not getting my Protein in. Any tips/suggestions on how to keep up and meet liquid and protein goal?

Just keep sipping. My surgeon was ok not meeting goals for the first couple of weeks as long as I was making a concerted effort & was close. But if you’re drinking your three shakes a day you should be fine. (I diluted mine cause I found them to thick & I got more Fluid in.)

Some find setting a time on their phones helpful so they sip every day 5 minutes. I keep Water beside my bed so I drink during the night too. I also found it easier to drink warm/hot drinks than cold. I even heated my shakes (the chocolate one & pretended it was hot chocolate😉).

I was lucky enough to like all the same Protein Drinks I liked ripe to sleeve surgery. Hot herbal tea was my friend. I only liked iced cold Water it tasted amazing but I did have to sip all day. Your stomach will be more and more open to receiving more and more liquids as it Heals. You got a new stomach so just have to train it. Have something with you to drink all day long and experiment with the options. I also loved diluted no sugar added apple juice. Believe it won’t just be dehydration the Constipation will drive you nuts.

I struggled for the first 2 months, I had so much nausea. It hasn't done me any harm in the long run and I can chug drinks now, hooray. I drank through the night too, @Arabesque Told me to do it too. Low calorie ice pops and warm drinks helped me through it- Oxo, Bovril [ also called beef tea ] and Ribena sugar free blackcurrant cordial are the English brand names I found helped me most. Tomato juice was a wonder drink that helped turn me around. It was 47 cals for 200mls and tasted great with hot sauce. Dont be afraid to try anything, good luck

I had to keep a bottle of Fluid in my hand all the time, and I had to keep rotating them so they were iced cold. I still don't really like Water unless it is iced cold. I drink a lot of iced coffee and hot tea, as well as water mixed with flavor packets.

Don't worry in the first few weeks if you don't get 60+ g of Protein. Focus on the fluid first. That can get you messed up first, dehydration.

Several posters here have mentioned juices, but I wasn't allowed to have sugar, so I found sugar free juices (5 calories per 8 oz serving) that I really like.

It could be a number of things but I have sorted some stuff out. I also got the info on this forum. I take medication for it an hour before I eat or drink in a morning. Some times its your Vitamins that do it. I couldn't take gummy vitamins at all. I have Multivitamins and Iron , twice a day. One after Breakfast and one before bed at night. The plate sized Calcium tablet, I take after lunch. Such a treat isn't it . I have also sorted out my Constipation too with those delicious powders. I get lots of liquids in too. So what cured me ? I dont know but I did all this and poof I am nearly cured.

Also some people have nausea because of the sweetener in the Protein shakes. You may need to shop around for one that suits you. I hope you sort it out soon.

Vitamins made me feel awful both physically and mentally. I stopped taking them and all my blood work so far as vitamins go have been fine. I also avoid artificial sweetners too.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
