2 weeks post op with my vsg and feeling so thirsty. My mouth is always dry even when sipping down my Water and Gatorade. When can I start chugging down my water!!??? Help!!

Idk if you will ever “chug” a lot at least. I can drink normal swallows and I can “chug” like half a glass now at 11 months out but that’s about it. You can take a little bit bigger sips as it is comfortable and then take a couple or a few swallows as your body allows. Some people never chug again and some can drink the same as they did preop. I’m guessing most fall somewhere in between. Regardless, take it super slow.

In the beginning I would take a big mouthful of Water and just hold it in my mouth to fix my dry mouth. Then either spit it out or slowly swallow the water in little bits until it was all gone.

It’s very individual. I still can’t chug. More than two large swallows & my restriction kicks in but I don’t have to wait as long between a drink (a minute or two depending) so that helps. I actually prefer it because I never feel really thirsty now because I’m constantly keeping myself hydrated.

If the dry mouth is bad you can try some of the mouth moisturising sprays like Biotene.

Drinking frequency & volume is a habit. Your body will learn your new drinking routine of sipping little & often versus drinking large volumes a couple of times a day. It just may take a little time.

You don't need to be "chugging" your Water. Just keep sipping, sipping, sipping all day long. If you've got a dry throat, suck on some sugar-free mints. Suck on some sugar-free popsicles.

I'm 6 months out and still don't chug, though I can take a couple of good mouthfuls in a short period of time. I really don't want to push it and see what I can do because the price for being overzealous is high.

If I had really dry mouth, I found ice chips more soothing than just drinking Water.

The dry mouth especially when you wake up is a awful sensation isnt it. So worse than waking full of a cold and having slept with your mouth open to breath because your nose is blocked. Just keep doing your best with the liquids and one day you will find its not a chore to drink anymore. Popsicles were my go to. I can do 3 gulps now at 12 weeks out. Happy drinking

I have dry mouth from medication so I get that. But for me, Water doesn't help the dry mouth. More acidic liquids, like diet juice, Crystal Light, etc are better. Plus as @Arabesque said, things like Biotene mouth spray or sugar free hard candies (limit those because they can cause diarrhea in some people).

As far as chugging, I am 5 months out and I can drink a few gulps at once, but I can't chug a whole bottle of water anymore.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
