Band to Bypass Surgery coming up...SCARED

Hi, folks. I got a lap band in 2014 and did well for a few years but the band "migrated" and I had to have it removed. Now I'm going in for gastric bypass 2/3. I am excited to get my body in a healthier place but I'm nervous about the massive changes I will have to learn to live well. The band simply wouldn't allow me to get most things I wanted to eat through. It was more of a surgical device for bulimia than a life-style change tbh.

Can you folks who have gone through a band to traditional gastric bypass (not sleeve) surgery tell me what you found to be the MOST helpful tool to maximize your success? I need peeps who've been where I'm heading in 2 weeks.

I didn't have band to bypass, I had sleeve to bypass, but I can still suggest what I think is the greatest tool for me - tracking RELIGIOUSLY. Every thing that goes in your mouth gets weighed and tracked. Buy yourself a little digital scale, you don't need anything fancy, can get a decent one for ten bucks on Amazon. Make sure it does both grams and ounces, and USE it every day for every meal, and put it in your tracker. I use MyFitnessPal (free version), you can use whatever you feel comfortable with. But weigh and track. NEVER eyeball a meal. You will always assume it is less than it actually is.

I don't eat more than 4 oz or so at a time, and you would be surprised how small 4 oz of some foods can appear. The scale keeps you from cheating with the portions (even accidentally) and the tracker keeps you honest about how many calories you are consuming, as well as the nutritional values.

An extra benefit of the tracker is if you start to have problems or backslide, you can go back to see what you did that worked and recreate those meals. I recently went back and looked at my entries in 2016 and 2017 to see what I was eating the first months I was sleeved because I was doing so well, and I started eating those same things again now and am seeing similar success.

Thank you!! I will get the digital scale and download the tracker app on my phone. I'm a little nervous about the surgery but I am excited about getting back on track with my health.

I'm a little anxious about the upcoming surgery. Are you having to do the liver shrinking diet?

I did band to bypass (band out about 5 months before my bypass). Bypass is SO much better than band. Although I did very well with the band originally, it got to where I'd wake up choking on stomach acid even when I was mostly unfilled.

For the bypass I was fortunate to have a very easy recovery. I followed my Surgeons orders exactly, especially in the first couple of months. Drink as much Water as you can (I found if I sipped everytime someone on TV or around me did or at all commercial breaks it helped in the early days). I also did lots of Premier Protein shakes (and still do green smoothies with Protein for Breakfast quite often)

Once healed and on "normal" diet I found meal prep was key. I don't like to eat a piece of meat and veggies, but I do well with casseroles or stews, so I'd find and make healthy meals, portion them out in microwaveable bowls. I'd do 2 or 3 different meals each week (freeze extras if needed) then I just have to grab and heat and I got the right amount and good macro's.

Loridee, did you lose all of your weight while you had your band? Or did you have more to lose after you revised to bypass? And if so, did you lose your weight slower with the bypass?

I'm in the process of revising to bypass from band. My band was removed 4/2021 and now I'm in the process of revising and I'm trying to get an understanding how exactly the bypass is different from the band. I see a lot of people saying it's different and better, but I'm still not exactly sure what makes it different and better. Other than the obvious lack of reflux a lot of banders experienced, myself included.

I had the lap band in 2002, switched to sleeve because it was causing problems in 2009, now I’m working on the process for conversion to bypass. I lost a lot with the band, I didn’t really lose much after the sleeve due to stress, illness, etc. I’m committed to the changes and have lost 18 pounds since initial consult with the surgeon in September. The GERD issue is prompting the conversion surgery. I have one more pre surgery appointment left. I’m scared of both the pain and perhaps failing. Good luck to you.

Thanks to my fellow WLS pals for responding. I have been getting more prepared for surgery (in FIVE DAYS!) and have what I need for the first several weeks at home and ready to go. I am not as afraid of post-surgery pain as I am about having a pretty big surgery at 55 y/o. I know that's not crazy old but it's not 20's or 30's anymore either. I am praying to put it all in God's Hands and Trust in Him.

This week I'm going to make:

- chicken Pot pie - minus the pie --- so kind of a chicken stew. The one I like has Thyme and Dijon as the base flavors.
- Vegetable au gratin: It's cauliflower, broccoli, leek and chicken dinner sausage in a Sour cream (I replace 1/2 with greek yogurt and use lower fat versions) and cheese sauce.
- Thai chicken salad for lunch's.

Hi whispers, I lost most of my weight with band (333 to 183) but then I gained it all back. When I started my weight loss pre- RNY I was back at 333. I'm now down around 160 and I lost it over a little over a year.

What made bypass better for me: food doesn't get stuck. I don't throw up. I don't have acid reflux (well, much. I'm one of the unfortunate ones that still has some). At 2+ years out I eat a "normal" amount --- normal for normal weight people, not my pre-surgery normal. That can be good or bad as if I eat the wrong things I will get too many calories. But it is better than with band. With band, if I was retaining Water, or on my period I may only be able to eat a bite or two some days. Other days it felt like I could eat anything.

For what it's worth, I also really embraced exercise and walk almost every day, hike multiple days a week, and hit the gym a few times a week now that they are open again.

Hello! I am in the process of converting from a band to another type of WLS. I got the band in June 2009, and had it removed in June 2021, due to complications with acid reflux. I met with my surgeon in May of this year to discuss a revision. Due to the issues with the band, he doesn't recommend the sleeve, but the bypass. I am nervous about the re-routing and the fact that I am almost 50. My current weight is 250 lbs. Would you be able to share some of your experiences/challenges before, during and after the revision surgery? I have completed most of my clearances and will meet with the surgeon on September 1st--I think during that visit we will discuss my surgery date and the type of surgery.

I appreciate any insight you can provide.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
