Potatoes 5 weeks out

I’ve had mashed and roasted potatoes. I haven’t tried fries yet. Hopefully I won’t like them when I do, but I doubt I would be that lucky.

I've gone into this with the mindset that no food is off limits, and at least for me, that really worked (YMMV). I've had fries a ton of times ... like, 5 each time. That's it.

I can really recommend working on re-gaining the feeling of what full is. So many of us have been training ourselves to ignore hunger/satiety signals for diet purposes that it's very difficult to truly feel it.

You know that whole thing they say about turn off everything when you eat, do nothing but eat, sit for 15 minutes with your meal etc.? It seems like something we can't reasonably do, and I sure can't, but trying it out is a mind-blowing experience for some.

Just sitting there with your food, trying to really feel what it does when your body starts telling you "hey, thanks for the food, I'm good now!" Can highly recommend just trying it out for the experience.

Im 5 weeks and 2 days out. I am tolerating all the allowed foods easily. Any one have experience with potatoes at this stage?

I did, because it was one of the few approved foods that tasted good to me. Even now, at 9 weeks, I still eat them with a laughing cow piece melted in a serving…. What’s weird is that when I hit a stall for a week, a couple of servings of potatoes kicks it back into gear. I have no idea why, but it does

I honestly have eaten what I wanted since 3 days after surgery 12/22

I know my limits and haven't had any problems.

My dietitian wasn't happy but, I've been doing what works for me and have lost 15pounds.

I don't deprive myself because that makes the craving stronger.

It's not everyday so I think im fine.

Your dietitian wasn't happy because at 3 days your staple line is still healing and you risk busting it open.

My Nutritionist told me I could eat a little mashed or baked but only a few times a week and not much. But sweet potatoes are a free for all I can eat them as often as I desire - within my calories and 6 meals a day of course lol

I eat potatoes like they are going out of style. Mashed, roasted or baked… I do eat the skin and if I am craving them, I will make it a meal with some kind of meat on top with cheese and a little sour cream. I have always tolerated them just fine.. however, there are a bunch of other things I don’t tolerate well - rice, breads, etc.

Your dietician isn’t happy because you could literally die if you don’t follow the program for the first 6 to 7 weeks due to breaking your new stomach open and having food seeping into your body cavity. No offense, but this is not good advice to all of the other new surgery patients on this page. People should absolutely adhere to the medical plan their doctor puts them on and follow the diet strictly for the first six weeks.

I didn’t eat potatoes at first, but over a year out I eat them now. Not every night, and I’m not getting fries at fast food, but tonight for dinner I’m planning on making a potato and chicken sausage fry. I don’t have a ton, but I really enjoy the meal.

Carbs are a tricky subject on these forums. Some people avoid them for life, and some have zero restrictions on anything. Personally I try to be reasonable with carbs- I don’t need candy or fast food, but I do have small amounts of rice and potatoes if it’s a part of a meal that is more heavily weighted to vegetables and/or Protein. It works for me.

I didn't, but mashed potatoes were on my list after the first week.

I have made the decision to avoid white potato, I did try sweet potato mash (I too am approx. 5 week out) and it went down like a lead balloon, I was in agony.

No potato for me, and to be honest, I don't really miss it.

I didn't advise any body on anything.

I stated what I did!

My dietitian that works with my surgeon and my pcp were all giving DIFFERENT advice so again I DID what worked for me.

Obviously I payed attention to what I was doing and doing things in moderation.

There are lots of things that people here have stated they're doing that didn't work for me.

So don't tell me what I should n shouldn't do, I can honestly tell people what I've done after my vsg if I want NO WHERE did I tell anyone they should do it.

The advice some of you receive others may not.

So be mindful of that before trying to dictate other people's post!

I'm right behind you with my weight loss.

I did have an issue with my teeth which stalled me a bit and I didn't want to consume anything.

When I talk to my team they said I was back on track a little bit ahead of expectations and to keep up the good work.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
