Food cravings 6 weeks post op

I probably ate fried foods at about 10 months post-op. Pasta maybe about the same time.

What your saying is a doctor wouldn't give you a date. That's because he would rather you didn't do it at all, which is the prudent thing to (not) do.

Eventually, you will need to come to peace with these things. Wait a few months longer if you can.

I actually can't eat much of any of that, even at over six years out. My stomach often rebels if I have more than a little of any of those things.

Ahh the battle of defeating or at the very least reducing the power of your cravings. Not easy at all.

I had some oven fry fish at around 5 or 6 months - I ate the fish & left the crumb coating. I did buy an air fryer a good year ago for when I want that crisp finish. But I really haven’t had traditionally deep fried food since before surgery. The exception has been calamari a few times. I haven’t had Pasta or rice for that long either except for test bites in the first year of maintenance that proved very quickly they weren’t for me (too heavy & too filling). When I want pasta I eat zucchini noodles - you can eat them from the soft food stage on. Same with cauliflower rice. I tried some high Protein vegetable pasta but while yummy (much improved from the mushy, starchy stuff of 20yrs ago) it was heavy in my tummy for some reason. I’ll give it a go again in the future.

I agree with @TheGreaterFool, your surgeon isn’t telling you when to eat these foods because they don’t want you to. One: probably to try to break your craving. Two: they’re too high in empty calories (little or no nutritional benefit). Three: because if you can only eat say 1/2 cup of food it should be nutritional dense & high in protein. And finally pasta & rice is too filling & can swell in your tummy meaning you can’t eat much of the nutritionally rich food you need to be eating.

Some quite happily eat traditional pasta, rice & deep fried foods at times in maintenance. But it really is your call.

Can you try to satisfy your cravings with healthier options? I've been having cauliflower mash and cauliflower risotto, just from the frozen food section, and it tastes sooo good. Or have the Pasta Sauce you want, but over zucchini noodles? There are a ton of recipes online for oven fried this and that. When I was doing Keto (low carb) a few years ago, we used crushed Pork rinds as breading for chicken fingers and it was delicious. Then bake in the oven or air fry. I know how hard it is to kick cravings though! It sucks!

First, as you are only 6 weeks post-op, really, if you can, try to just hold off and knuckle through it. The longer you stay away, the less frequent (and nagging) they become.. If you continually satisfy them, they will likely continue to torment you.

Try distraction (go for a walk, run some errands, read a book, do some chores, take a shower, paint ur nails…), or drink some Water instead. Even just 30 mins of abstaining may make the craving go away.

Second, for ME (ymmv), it helped to think about it as “not now, but maybe later”. Never is a strong word, and knowing that some day or time in the future I would be able to do/have something i want eases the mind. And its funny because later down the road, I realized i didn’t even miss is it (i’m looking as you rice and Pasta and bread).

Third, to answer ur question, i had fried food about 3-4 months post op, albeit it was only like 1 ring of lightly breaded calamari…and i was all, meh. I had bread and pasta for the first time at around 2 years post op (and only because Mr. makes a mean milk bread and ridiculously tender pasta). I have it very rarely though, and in relatively very small amounts (its very filling for me).

Rice, to this day i have not had, except for maybe a total of 3 maki roll pieces in the past 3 years. And this is saying something, as i am Asian, and pre-op, and I had rice practically every day, often multiple times a day. And now, honestly, I could do without.

I am perfectly happy with what i can and do eat these days (but i admit my diet is not the “healthiest”, and would probably make some folks clutch their pearls, lol)

Soooo…this is my long-winded response to say: its’s early. Yes, it may be challenging. Stick to the plan as long as you can and you will thank yourself. This period is only temporary.

Good advice on this thread already but throwing in something that has helped me. I bought a mini Air fryer and it has really helped me with my cravings for fried food. I have a thing for crispy so I use it for so many things.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
