2 Months post op… suddenly not being able to eat

Recommended Posts

Hi! So I had my surgery august 20th- I’ve lost about 35 pounds. Down from 325 to 294.. yay! I was cleared to eat regular foods at my one month post op appointment. Typically I eat a banana and Peanut Butter in the morning and drink a Protein coffee… eat some sort of small protein rich lunch and a very small dinner. Within the last few days my appetite has reduced to the point where I can barely get a Protein Drink down. I’m wondering if this is normal? Every time I go to eat something I immediately regret it. I get anxious and nervous. I cut out all added/ natural sugar and caffeine thinking it was maybe a symptom of dumping… but that does not seem to be what’s happening. Any advice??

Thank you!

When you say you regret it, what do you mean? Do you have nausea or vomiting? Diarrhea? Or emotional symptoms like anxiety that you will gain weight, or physical symptoms like shakiness?

Emotional symptoms like anxiety. Physically my heart rate increases and I get shaky because of the anxiety. I also feel nauseated. It wasn’t like this a few weeks ago, when I first started eating solid foods. Only recently did the food related anxiety start.

Do you eat fake sugars? All alternative sugars like stevia, Monk Fruit, sucralose all make me sick for a day After eating them. Also food seemed really unappealing at about 1 month to a year after my first surgery

If it’s anxiety around eating because you’re worried about decreased appetite then just know you can eat smaller meals and always go back for something else if you’re still hungry.

The types of food you’re adding in may also be the culprit. I know I couldn’t eat or stomach much eggs, chicken breast or dry cooked meats for a while after surgery. So maybe try something different than you were before. Same with the Protein Shakes, some don’t sit as well after surgery as others and drinking the same ones repeatedly can make us feel nauseated at the thought of having another.

If the problem continues after trying some of the suggestions a call to your bariatric team might be in order to rule out anything else that may be going on or give you peace of mind.

Hopefully it’s better soon!

If I were you I would keep a log of exactly what you eat when you feel like This and then get in touch with your nutritionist. Dumping can also happen because of fat?? Not sure if you considered that as a possible culprit. And some people develop food allergies like dairy?? A food log will help eliminate these things.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
