Shake recommendations please! (everything is tooooo sweet now)

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Coming up on 5 weeks po and just started back exercising at F45. I definitely need a good Protein Shake post work out but I find EVERYTHING is disgustingly sweet now.

Does anyone have any recommendations for less sweet flavoured or unsweetened high Protein Shakes?

I have tried the Atkins one 🤢, bodiez Protein Water 🤮, musashi 🤮🤮, Coles perform whey and pea 😑🤢 and unflavoured wpc from Coles 🤢, as well as the boomers wpi (once I got used to it, was kind of the best but still fairly gross).

I just don't want to buy a huge packet and not be able to stomach it!

I mix unflavored Protein Powder with a little bit of flavored powder. Takes the sweetness down a lot. My unflavored powder has kind of a weird taste when I only mix that with milk/water/yoghurt, but when adding a little bit of flavored powder, it masks that weird taste and gives it just enough flavour/sweetness. Try it!
I can’t recommend any brands since I live in Europe.

Ahh that's really smart, thanks!

I'm not sure what country you're in. In the US, we have Fairlife Nutrition Plan that tastes like chocolate milk. Or, you can mix whatever brand of Protein Shake (I don't like the powders, only the premixed shakes) with coffee. I use about 5.5 oz of Protein shake with 11 oz of cold Decaf coffee (I can't have real coffee for a month yet). Only helps if you like coffee! I'm drinking that right now, as a Breakfast.

Unjury sells a chicken broth-flavored Protein powder that a lot of people like. I used to drink it a lot when I was first out of surgery because I, too, had an aversion to sweet tastes for the first month or so after surgery.

Get some whey Protein isolate and dissolve it in whatever you like—chicken broth, Water, diet juice that you like. Unfortunately since I live in the US I can't speak with authority as to what's available in Oz.

Mixing the shakes with coffee like lizonaplane suggested is a good idea. The one shake I could stand that wasn’t too sweet post surgery was caffe latte by premiere Protein. Not sure if that is available to you as I am in the US. (I got mine on Amazon). It also has caffeine which I was allowed immediately post op but some aren’t. The coffee will definitely cut down on the sweetness though.

I also mix my shake/powder up with unsweetened whey. Depending on the flavor I choose I may mix it with Decaf coffee, which tempers the sweetness quite a bit.

Unjury has a single serving sample pack on their site. I ordered it so I can try different flavors.

I'd be grabbing unflavoured Protein powder and mixing it with your choice of milks/water, then adding powdered coffee or powdered matcha for flavour.

I'm finding my sweet taste buds are oversensitive post op too. The Raw Slim and Tone chocolate flavour was bittersweet pre-surgery, but post it's just sweet enough. The other brand I used for pre op that was a sweet salted caramel would be way too sweet for me now. I get a bit queasy thinking about it.

Premier Protein were my go to. I like the chocolate flavor since it tastes like chocolate milk. Today, I will be restarting my Protein Shakes, but will try adding fruits and spinach to them to change it up and add as a Meal Replacement. I am 9 months post op gastric sleeve.

I also used Protein powders with Water added (bonus being u can just add more water to make it less sweet/thick…though i suppose u could do that with the ready made ones as well…)

i tried out a whole bunch of them and finally settled on Isopure’s dutch chocolate flavoured powder. It was by far the least sweet (with the exception of the unflavoured of course) that I tried.

I added a tsp of Decaf instant coffee crystals, 2 tsps of Benefibre, a bunch of ice and water. Ta-da!

I bought some Protein Soups at the Bariatric Pal Store. The cream of chicken is my favorite. I was sooo tired of the sweet tastes too.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
